”Announcing The End” on synkintä Sparzanzaa tähän mennessä

Jo yli kaksikymmentä vuotta musiikin saralla vaikuttanut ruotsalainen hard rock -yhtye Sparzanza julkaisee lokakuun 13. päivä kahdeksannen studioalbuminsa. Edellisestä julkaisusta ehti vierähtää lähes kolme vuotta, ja kun yhtye oli pari vuotta ilman levy-yhtiötä, aloin jo jännittää Sparzanzan tulevaisuuden puolesta. Onneksi yhtye sai sopimuksen Despotz Recordsilta.

Aloitusraidan lisäksi muita helposti kuunneltavia kappaleita ovat kauniisti soljuva ”Whatever Come May Be”, paatoksellinen ”Vindication” ja lohduttoman sanoman sisältävä ”We Are Forever”. ”We are Forever” on luonteensa suhteen lähimpänä Sparzanzan vanhaa soundia.

”One Last Breath” edustaa hyvin Sparzanzan uutta ilmettä. Reilu viisiminuuttinen kappale alkaa lähes minuutin kestävällä alkusoitolla, jonka jälkeen Weileby laulaa rauhallisella äänellä todella synkistä asioista. Kappale etenee riffeillä kohti kertosäkeitä, joissa tuodaankin esille väkevämpää otetta. ”Whatever Come May Be” erottuu ehdottomasti albumin yhdeksi hienoimmaksi kappaleeksi kauniin äänimaailmansa ja ihon alle menevien sanoitustensa vuoksi. ”Breathe In The Fire” on loistava esimerkki siitä, miten hyvin Sparzanza osaa venyttää riffejä laahaaviksi ja koukuttaviksi. ”The Trigger” on ”We Are Foreverin” kaltainen suoraviivaisempi kappale, kun taas ”To The One” on upea, hiukan progressiivisempi kappale.

”Announcing The End” on onnistunut askel erilaisempaan ilmaisuun. Sparzanzan kahdeksas julkaisu on ehdottomasti yksi mielenkiintoisimpia levyjä, joita on tänä vuonna julkaistu.

Hard rock band Sparzanza has played together for over twenty years. The band will release their eight album 13th October, 2017. Their latest album, “Circle”, was released almost three years ago. I got a bit worried while waiting for the new album: the band did not have a contract with a record label. But, luckily they were signed by Despotz Records which has also signed bands like Corroded and Satan Takes A Holiday in the past.

“Announcing The End” is an epic and respectable album if judged by both the name and the cover art of the album. Band members are known as atheists, and yet, they have covered religious lyrics many times during their career. You can find religious themes in this album’s lyrics, too, but in certain ways this album makes a difference when compared with the previous releases. The cover art of the “Announcing The End” has got a lot of details in it, and it seems very descriptive. The art work seems very unique when compared with older Sparzanza album covers. This album cover looks like a renaissance painting but it is far more apocalyptical: four horsemen, trombones of Judgement Day, and falling meteorites. You can also see Lamb of God and God himself sitting on his throne, which itself, makes a strong statement. The art work behind the “Announcing The End” is very influential. It immediately catches one’s eye!

When it comes to the music it is obvious that Sparzanza has built up its sound. There is less aggressive singing and catchy choruses on ”Announcing The End” even though the band has built its grounds on these in the past. I feel like this album is taking a step towards more peaceful and a melodic way of playing. Even if there can be found few ballads on “Circle” giving its music some new perspectives I was not expecting an album like this. They still sound like Sparzanza but there is a long way to their older albums which, I would call, is ”astonishing”. I had to listen to the album quite few many times before I got into their new sound.

The title song starts with threatening melodies. They remind me of trombones playing. The melody of the first song gets listeners prepared for a 50-minute-long journey into the darkness. In the beginning of the song vocalist Weileby sings in a very calm manner, a little bit apathetically but in the choruses he pushes his voice stronger. ”Announcing The End” has got very deep and dark lyrics which are supported by rough and low riffs as well as heavy drums. The first moments of the album feel extremely dark, a little bit scary but at the same time fascinating.

Besides the title song “Announcing The End” there are some ”easy to listen” songs on the album – like a beautiful “Whatever Come May Be”, a creepy “Vindication”, and “We Are Forever” which has a message that ”there is no hope”. The songs mentioned here are easy to listen to because of their catchy and clear choruses. “We Are Forever” sounds more like the old Sparzanza. Once you listen to the album few more times, the rest of the album will open up to you.

“One Last Breathe” represents the new sound of Sparzanza. This five-minute-long song begins with an instrumental melody. After one minute Weileby starts singing, very peacefully. The song feels serene at first but the choruses kick back very well. “Whatever Come May Be” is one of the most amazing songs on this album. The song has a powerful atmosphere, and it really gets under one’s skin. There is also a guest singer singing on “Whatever Come May Be” which is unusual to Sparzanza. In this song a Finnish singer Sophie Aittola is singing a duet with Weileby in the choruses. Her part is not big in itself but it has got its purpose in the song. “Breathe In The Fire” is a perfect example of Sparzanza’s ability to stretch riffs at length, and songs to be somewhat catchy. “The Trigger” is more of a straight-forward-kind-of song  just like “We Are Forever” whereas “To The One” is a magnificent, but also a little bit more progressive song.

The main difference between “Announcing The End” and the previous albums of Sparzanza is in the general sound of the new album. On their new album aggressive vocals and crushing riffs have been left more in the background, and instead, more room has been given to both long and fuzzy riffs, and Weileby’s softer singing. It is hard to categorize “Announcing The End”, in which genre it really belongs to, but it is very clear that it can’t be placed in the same category as the other Sparzanza albums. This isn’t a bad thing – in fact it is refreshing. There are more guitar solos on “Announcing The End” than on the earlier albums. And I think that these guitar solos fit better in Sparzanza’s new sound than in their earlier, more aggressive musical expression.

This Sparzanza album is different to their previous albums and, yet, I can’t stop admiring the outcome. I do have to admit that, at first glance, I wasn’t quite sure if I was to like this album because of its lack in aggression. ”Announcing The End” may take a little bit more listening in order to get the whole picture. The album is entertaining, energetic, and has got more interesting lyrics if compared with the band’s other albums. Some of the tracks are more interesting than others but as a whole the album gives one a smooth listening experience. This album seems to offer a lot to listeners – it feels like there is something new to discover during every listening. With ”Announcing The End” Sparzanza has deliberately taken a new direction instead of doing what it has been doing for decades – it’s epic and even darker than its old sound. Before listening to this album I thought that Sparzanza had already reached all the darkness that they possibly can but, obviously, I was wrong. “Announcing The End” is definitely one of the most interesting and creepiest albums that I have discovered this year.
