Corrodedin Jens Westin: ”Minun on vieläkin vaikea nähdä itseäni laulajana.”

Corroded julkaisi hiljattain neljännen studioalbuminsa “Defcon Zeron”. Edeltävästä julkaisusta oli kulunut jo lähemmäs viisi vuotta, ja koska bändiä ei ollut näkynyt hetkeen Suomessa, pelkäsin, tuleeko yhtyeen tarinalle enää jatkoa. Onneksi kuitenkin tuli – Corroded on nykyisin osa Despotz Recordsin perhettä, joten hommat lähtevät varmasti rullaamaan. Yhtyeen vokalisti-kitaristi Jens Westinillä oli puolisen tuntia aikaa rupatella puhelimessa, ja hän jakoi ajatuksiaan vasta ilmestyneestä levystä sekä yhtyeen tulevaisuuden suunnitelmista. Moro jätkä! Mitäs Corrodedin leiriin tänä vuonna kuuluu?

Westin: Vuosi on ollut hieno: olemme soittaneet keikkoja ja olleet tapamme mukaan kiireisiä.

Corrodedin edeltävä julkaisu ”State Of Disgrace” julkaistiin vuonna 2012. Mitä yhtyeenne on puuhannut viimeiset viisi vuotta?

Westin: Olemme keikkailleet todella paljon ”State Of Disgracen” julkaisun myötä. ”Defcon Zero” on itse asiassa ollut valmiina jo kolme vuotta, mutta levy-yhtiön vaihdoksen ja muiden sotkujen takia julkaiseminen on viivästynyt pahasti. Olemme kuitenkin tosi innoissamme, kun saamme levyn nyt julkaistua.

Albumin nimi on ”Defcon Zero”. Miten nimi heijastaa sen musiikkia?

Westin: Mielestäni yhdelläkään levyllä, jonka olemme tehneet, ei varsinaisesti ole mitään tiettyä teemaa, mutta jotain sinne päin. Tämä levy kuvaa maailman tämänhetkistä tilannetta meidän silmin – ihmiset ovat peloissaan, ja jotkut hyödyntävät toisten pelkoa ja jopa ruokkivat sitä. Albumi on kuin maailmansotien summa, jonka jälkeen on uusi alku.

Olen kuunnellut albumin useasti, ja minusta se kuulostaa jotenkin erilaiselta kuin aiemmat julkaisunne. Mitä mieltä sinä olet? Eroaako tämä albumi edeltävistä?

Westin: Totta kai. Mielestäni levyllä on monta erottavaa piirrettä. Ensinnäkin tämä on uusi levy. Teimme tämän albumin ilman tuottajaa, joten meillä oli vapaat kädet ja vastuu tehdä itse enemmän. Mielestäni uusin albumi on hiukan rankempi kuin vanhemmat. Olemme olleet rankka ja kova livebändi, joten olemme äänittäneet osan kappaleista keikoilla. Teimme myös tämän levyn kohdalla niin. Tällä albumilla emme lisänneet niin paljon riffejä kuin aiemmin, vaan pyrimme tuomaan esiin kappaleiden ydintä. ”Defcon Zerolla” on kappaleita, jotka ovat melodisempia kuin aiemmin tekemämme, mutta myös kappaleita, jotka ovat vähemmän melodisia kuin mitkään aiemmin. Tätä pitkäsoittoa tehdessä kirjoitimme sanoitukset ja työskentelimme rankasti yhdessä, ja meillä oli todella mukavaa.

Mielestäni äänesi kuulostaa erilaiselta tällä levyllä. Oletko ottanut laulutunteja?

Westin: Todennäköisesti se johtuu siitä, että olemme keikkailleet paljon, ja keikkailuun liittyvät asiat ovat vaikuttaneet ääneeni. Minun on edelleen hankala nähdä itseäni laulaja, koska miellän itseni enemmän kitaristiksi. Oli oikeastaan sattumaa, että päädyin yhtyeessämme laulajaksi. Laulaminen on minulle tärkeää enkä vaihtaisi sitä mihinkään, mutta silti koen olevan enemmän kitaristi.

Julkaisitte kaksi singleä uudelta albumilta, jälkimmäisenä ”Carry Me My Bonesin”. Tällä kappaleella sanoitusten takana on In Flamesin Anders Friden. Kuinka päädyitte tähän yhteistyökuvioon?

Westin: Sanoitukset ovat ainoa asia levyä tehdessä, joka vaatii minulta paljon aikaa. Kaikki muu musiikin tekemiseen liittyvä luonnistuu vaivattomasti, mutta sanat vaativat aikaa. Rumpalimme Per Soläng oli se, joka keksi pyytää Anders Frideniä mukaan. Hän totesi, miksi emme kysyisi Frideniä kirjoittamaan sanoituksia, koska hän haluaisi niitä kirjoittaa. Kysyimme asiaa häneltä, ja hän suostui. Lähetimme hänelle kappaleen raakaversion, hän teki sanat ja laittoi ne meille. Kun saimme sanoitukset, sovitimme ne kappaleeseen ja tuloksena oli uusi kappale. Hauska osuus tässä on se, että emme koskaan saaneet Frideniltä mielipidettä lopullisesta versiosta vaan julkaisimme kappaleen.

Minkälaisia asioita käsittelette levyn sanoituksissa?

Westin: Sanoitukset kertovat siitä, mitä olemme nähneet ja kokeneet maailmassa. Monesti sanoituksissa suurennamme asian kokoa. Sanoitukset voi vaikka tehdä niin, että jos on naapurin kissa karkasi, kirjoittaakin sanoituksiin, että naapurin vaimo karkasi. Tämän levyn kohdalla sanoitukset oli helppo tehdä, sillä maailmassa on paljon pelkoa, ja me käytimme sitä kappaleiden sanoitusten aiheena. On surullista, että maailma on tällä hetkellä tulvillaan pelkoa ja vihaa, ja ihmiset käyttäytyvät hölmösti. Ihmisten tulisi miettiä omaa käytöstään ja sitä, miten voisivat toimia paremmin. Sanoitukset kuvastavat, kuinka me bändin jäseninä näemme maailman. Corrodedin albumit eivät kuitenkaan ole olleet poliittisia kannanottoja, eikä uusinkaan levy ole.

Vaikka käsittelemme sanoituksissa syviä asioita, toivon silti, että jokainen kuuntelija muodostaa itse oman käsityksensä ja mielipiteensä levystä. Jokainen päättää itse, mitä kuulee kappaleissa. Vihaan sitä, kun luen kirjan ja sen jälkeen katson elokuvan siitä, ja huomaankin, että olen kuvitellut hahmot ”väärännäköisiksi”. Ihmisten tulisi kuunnella levyä niin, että se sopii omaan elämään. Tai niin minä ainakin asian näen.

Albumilta löytyy kappale nimeltään ”DRF”. Mitä tämä nimi tarkoittaa?

Westin: Kappaleen oikea nimi on ”Dirty Rotten Fucker”, mutta tuon nimistä kappaletta on hankala saada radiosoittoon. Siksi sen nimi on ”DRF”. Kappale kertoo niistä ihmisistä, jotka ottavat asioita muista välittämättä ja kohtelevat muita välinpitämättömästi. Näin ajattelin silloin, kun kappaletta kirjoitin.

Nykyisin monet vanhemmat yhtyeet ovat alkaneet tehdä kiertueita, joilla ne soittavat klassikkolevyjään kokonaisuudessaan. Mitä mieltä olet tällaisesta? Minkä levyn haluaisit itse kuulla kokonaan soitettuna?

Westin: Mielestäni se on hauska ajatus, eikä se ainakaan vaivaa minua. On paljon ihmisiä, jotka ajattelevat vanhempien yhtyeiden musiikin olevan nykyään surkeaa, mutta ihannoivat vanhoja levyjä tyyliin ”ensimmäinen levy oli paras” tai ”ensimmäinen levy oli kuraa, mutta kolmas oli paras”. Mielestäni on siistiä, että jotkin yhtyeet pystyvät klassikkolevyillään tekemään sellaisia kiertueita. Musiikkibisneksessä on nykyään tarpeeksi vaikeaa tehdä rahaa elääkseen, joten tuollainen on vain hyvä asia.

Vaihtoehtoja on monia, mutta AC/DC:n ”Back In Black” olisi ollut mahtavaa kuulla. Nykyään se ei kuitenkaan ole mahdollista, kun Malcolm Young, Phil Rudd ja Brian Johnson eivät ole osa yhtyettä. Testamentilla on monta hyvää albumia, vaikka pidän todella paljon uusimmasta ”Brotherhood Of Snakestakin”. Metallican tai Testamentin uusin levy olisi todella hienoa kuulla livenä.

Ronnie James Dio ilmestyi pari vuotta sitten Wacken Open Airissa lavalle hologrammin muodossa. Luin hiljattain artikkelin, jossa kerrottiin, että Dio lähtee tänä vuonna kiertueelle hologrammina. Mitä mieltä olet asiasta?

Westin: Minusta se on helvetin outo ajatus. Olen nähnyt Dion muutaman kerran, ja vaikka hän oli pieni mies, hänellä oli uskomaton ääni. Jos ihmiset haluavat nähdä hologrammin, niin menkööt katsomaan. Minä en mene. Kukin kuitenkin tehköön kuten haluaa.

Keikoista puheen ollen, milloin näemme Corrodedin seuraavan kerran Suomessa?

Westin: Suunnittelemme parhaillaan kiertuetta uuden levyn vuoksi, ja toivon todella, että pääsemme soittamaan muutaman keikan Suomessa. Vierailustamme Suomessa on kulunut liikaa aikaa, ja meidän tulee korjata asia mahdollisimman pian.

Uskon, että saatte asian korjattua. Muistatko vielä, millainen suomalainen yleisö on?

Westin: Suomalainen yleisö on aika samanlainen kuin ruotsalainen – maassanne ihmiset ovat hard rockista ja hevistä kiinnostuneita, mikä tekee siitä ihanteellisen paikan meille soittaa. Suomalaiset tykkäävät rockista ja hevistä sekä teiltä tulee monia hyviä yhtyeitä, mikä on helvetin hienoa.

Jos saisit valita yhden yhtyeen, jonka kanssa lähtisitte kiertueelle, mikä se yhtye olisi?

Westin: Slipknot olisi todella siisti. Ja Machine Head. Hyviä yhtyeitä olisi monia, joista valita, mutta valitsisin Slipknotin.

Millaisia suunnitelmia yhtyeellänne on loppuvuodeksi?

Westin: Alamme kirjoittaa uusia sanoituksia. Meillä on noin kymmenen kappaletta valmiina tulevaa levyä varten, ja yritämme löytää aikaa studiossa työskentelylle. Meillä on myös päivätyöt ja sivuprojekteja, joita yritämme sovittaa yhteen. Uuden levyn aiomme julkaista vuoden tai puolentoista sisällä.

Swedish Corroded just released their fourth album ”Defcon Zero”. Third album were released almost five years ago and band hasn’t visited in Finland for a while, which made me nervous about Corroded’s future. Luckily Despotz Records took band in their label so things should keep rolling. Jens Westin had time to share his thoughts about new album and band’s future.

Hi man! How has the year 2017 been so far to Corroded?

Westin: It has been great – we have been touring and playing so it has been business as usually to us.

Your previous release “State Of Disgrace” were released in 2012. What has Corroded been doing in last five years?

Westin: We have been touring after releasing “State Of Disgrace” almost five years. We have played many shows in many countries. Our new album “Defcon Zero” has been ready for three years but we have changed our label and that stuff so it has took a much time to release new album. So we’re excited to release our new album.

How does the title name “Defcon Zero” reflect to album’s music?

Westin: I think every album that we have released haven’t had theme but something close to it. This album is describing the situation of world right now – it is showing how people are afraid and how some people in politics are using and feeding this fear. It is like aftermath of all wars, this is new beginning.

I have listened “Defcon Zero” many times and I have to say it sounds little bit different than previously ones. What is your opinion from album? How does it make difference to previously releases?

Westin: Of course. I think there is many things that makes difference to elder albums. First of all this is new album. With this album we first time worked without producer so we made a lot of stuff by ourselves. I think this new album is little bit tougher than previously ones. We have been always tough and strong live band, so we have recorded some songs alive from gigs to album. We did that with this album as well. On this album we didn’t add so much guitars and we picked up more bare core from songs. “Defcon Zero” has some songs which are more melodic than in elder albums but at the same time this album includes songs which are less melodic than older songs ever. On this album we made lyrics together and worked hard together and it was really nice process.

I think your singing sounds little bit different in this album? Have you took some singing lessons?

Westin: I think that is because we have toured a lot and many things have involved and affected to my singing. I still have hard times to see myself as a singer ‘cause I think I’m guitarist. That was kind of accident that I became the singer of the band. At the same time singing is really important to me and I won’t give up for it, but I still think I’m more guitarist than singer.

You have released two singles from new album and latest single, “Carry Me My Bones” where lyrics are made by Anders Friden from In Flames. How did you come up with this cooperation?

Westin: Lyrics are only thing in making album which really take time for me. Writing riffs and writing songs are really natural and they come up easy to all in band, but lyrics are the toughest one to work. It was our drummer Per Soläng who came up with this idea that “why don’t we ask Anders Friden to write lyrics ‘cause he would like to do that?”. We asked him and he agreed and we sent rough demo song to him and he made lyrics. When we received lyrics we made melody around it and the result was a new song. Fun part is that we never had the chance ask him that what did he like about new melody, which we made based on his lyrics so we just released result without his opinion.

What kind of things you’re dealing with this album?

Westin: Most of the album lyrics describe that what we have seen or experienced from world and in lyrics we enlarge it in new size. It is like if you have a neighbor whose cat ran away, you could change the cat to wife and write song about it. But with this album it was easier to wrote lyrics, because the world has a lot of fear and we use that in our songs. It is sad situation that there is a lot of fear and angry in this world and people are acting stupid. People should step back and think about their behavior and think what they could do better. Lyrics show how we as a members of Corroded see the world around us. Our albums haven’t never been political and new album doesn’t make difference to that.

Even we’re dealing deep things in this album I wish that every listener makes own opinions about album and lyrics. You decided what you hear from songs. Personally I hate it when I read book and after that watch a movie about it and then I realize that characters which I imagine don’t look like that I thought. People should make own decisions and opinions from this album and listen songs that way that they suits in to life. Well this is how I think how it should be done.

Your album has song called “DRF”. What does it mean?

Westin: The song is actually called “Dirty Rotten Fucker” but it is hard to get song called like that on the radio. That’s why it “DRF”. The song tells about those guys how are taking stuff as they please and treating other people badly. That’s what I thought about when I wrote it.

Nowadays seems like many big old bands has started make tours where they’re playing their classic albums. What do think about this? Is there any album you would like to see played live from beginning to end?

Westin: I think it’s kind of fun actually, it doesn’t bother me. There is a lot of people who think about some old bands suck nowadays but “the first album is the best” or “the first album sucked but third is the best”. It’s kind of cool that some bands can tour by playing one or two classic albums. Nowadays it’s hard enough to make money to live as band so that kind of touring is good.

There is some many choices so it is hard to pick one, but AC/DC playing “Back In Black” would be cool to hear. But considering nowadays it is impossible ‘cause Malcolm Young, Phil Rudd and Brian Johnson aren’t part of the band anymore. But for example Testament has many great albums, even I love to new album “Brotherhood Of Snake” as well. Metallica playing new album would be cool or Testament playing their new album would be really cool to hear.

Ronnie James Dio appeared on stage as hologram few years ago in Wacken Open Air. Recently there was an article about this hologram show and article told that Dio will be touring as hologram in this year. How do you feel about this?

Westin: That’s really fucking weird to me. I have seen Dio playing couple of times and he was absolutely awesome – even he was small man he had huge and awesome voice. But if people want to go and see it then they should do it. I wouldn’t. But at the same time, people should do things as they want.

Talking about touring, when do we see Corroded next time in Finland?

Westin: We’re working with tour dates for the new album and I really hope that we could do few shows in Finland. Last show in Finland was way too long time ago and we need to fix it and fix it very soon.

I bet you will. Do you still remember what kind of finnish audience is like?

Westin: The finnish audience has similarities with Swedish audience – people in Finland are in to hard rock and heavy metal so it’s ideal place to us to play there. You really like hard rock and heavy metal and have great bands, which is fucking cool.

If you could choose one band that you would be touring with what that band would be?

Westin: I think Slipknot would be cool. And Machine Head. There is a lot of good bands with would be awesome to tour with but I say Slipknot would be my choice.

What kind of future plans does Corroded has for rest of the year?

Westin: We’re going to start writing new lyrics for the next album. We have about then songs ready and we’re trying to find  time for studio work even we have gigs to play. We also have our day jobs and side projects so there is a lot to do. Anyway, we’re trying to release new album in a year or in a one year and a half.
