Incite 2014 (2)Yhdysvaltalainen metallia soittava Incite julkaisee uuden ”Up In Hell” nimeä kantavan albuminsa syyskuun 2. päivä Minus Head Recordsin kautta. Kaaoszine tavoitti sähköpostin välityksellä yhtyeen vokalistin Richie Cavaleran, joka tunnetaan myös Sepulturasta / Soulflysta / Cavalera Conspiracysta tutun legendaarisen Max Cavaleran poikapuolena.Lue lisää nähdäksesi Kaaoszinen haastattelu kokonaisuudessaan.

Terve Richie. Kuinkas vuosi 2014 on sujunut kokonaisuudessaan Inciten leirissä?

Richie Cavalera:Rakastan Suomea paikkana soittaa keikkoja. Aiomme palata Suomeen ensi vuonna joten odotan jo innolla uusien kappaleiden soittamista teille suomalaisille faneille.

Teiltä tosiaan on ilmestymässä uusi albumi nimeltä ”Up In Hell” syyskuussa Minus Head Recordsin kautta.

(naurua)

Teidän edellisen albumin tuottajana toimi Logan Mader (Machine Head), mutta tälle albumille otitte tuottajan puikkoihin Matt Hyden, joka on aikaisemmin tosiaan työskennellyt mm. Slayerille sekä Hatebreedille. Miten päädyitte yhteistyöhön juuri hänen kanssaaan ja saitteko häneltä paljon uusia ideoita albumia nauhoittaessanne?

Richie Cavalera: Tottakai saimme.

Uusi albumi on tosiaan saanut nimen ”Up In Hell”. Voisitko hieman valaista meille taustaa albumin nimen takaa?

Keksin albumin nimen ”Up In Hell” ollessani 8-vuotias.

Kappaleet, kuten ”Who Am I”, ”Still Here” sekä ”Losing Grip” kertovat omasta elämästäni ja siitä kuinka itse koen erilaisia tärkeitä asioita sekä tapahtumia maailmassa.

Voisitko kertoa meille hieman musiikista kyseisellä albumilla? Miten tämä albumi eroaa esimerkiksi ”All Out War” albumista?

Richie Cavalera: Mielestäni albumin nimikkokappaleen ”Up In Hell” täytyi tulla ensin ulos, koska se tavallaan antoi vähän osviittaa siitä mitä on tulossa.

Me kaikki tulemme samasta paikasta ja meillä kaikilla on yhteinen halu luoda jotain omaperäistä.

Olet tosiaan poikapuoli Max Cavaleralle. Tuleeko tästä mielestäsi paljon ylimääräisiä paineita itsellesi? Miltä sinusta tuntuu jatkuvat kirjoittelut ja maininnat asiasta?

Incite Up In Hell 2014Richie Cavalera: En ole oikeastaan koskaan mainostanut itseäni sillä, enkä ole koskaan liioin pyytänyt Maxia pönkittämään uraamme mitenkään.

Richie Cavalera: Kiitoksia paljon tuestanne. Oikea metalli ei koskaan kuole. Levittäkää sanaa meistä kavereillenne, että Incite on tulossa Suomeen keikalle. Kiitos!

English version:

Incite 2014 (2)US metallersIncite will unleash their third album to date entitled ”Up In Hell” on September 2nd through Minus Head Records. Kaaoszine caught up through email with the band´s current vocalist Richie Cavalera who is also happens to be the stepson of former Sepultura and current Cavalera Conspiracy / Soulfly vocalist Max Cavalera.

Hello Richie. How has the year 2014 been so far for you and Incite?

Richie Cavalera: It’s been a great year, got a new place to live, my relationship is great, and I just continued on with the family and the band. We recorded a brand new record with Matt Hyde out in California which went like a killer. We made two videos with director Robert Sexton which will be released in the next few weeks. It’s been a very busy year for the band and me. We have a tour with Chimaira in Europe later this year as we’ll, so it just never stops and that’s what you hope to happen, so it´s all good.

So you guys are about to release your third album to date ”Up In Hell” through September through Minus Head Records. Could you tell us shortly about the whole writing and recording process of the album? Was it all the way a typical one for you or did it differ somehow? Is there a primary song writer in the band or who writes the music?

Incite 2014 (4)Richie Cavalera: Yea it all starts with Kevin (guitars) and me. We talk about lyrics and vibe we want to set on the record. I told him heavy and brutal like nothing we’ve done before. I felt with the new drummer and bass player we could really excel on the thrash aspects of the music and still keep the groove that we love to add into it, which defines the Incite sound in our opinion. On the first two records we just locked ourselves in our jam room, but this time we all did it in our houses over the internet. Kevin would record a riff, send it to me and the drummer would start to build up the song and give ideas. Then Kevin would fine tune them and the drums would be added. Then at last we will add vocals and bass to the song to make it complete. Once we had the rough version done we sent them to our producer to check out and give us his critique.  So when we walked into the studio we would be as ready as possible.

Overall it was really a stress free process compared to the first two albums we have done. It was more on our pace and not just rushed, because we hated our jam room and the heat.

On your previous album you worked with Logan Mader (Machine Head) but this time the album was produced by Matt Hyde (Slayer, Hatebreed). What was Matt´s role in the recording process? Did he bring any new fresh ideas into the table while you were recording the album?

Richie Cavalera: Yea for sure. Logan was great for us during that part of our career and got the best out from us. But this time we felt we needed to go bigger and someone that had a very huge history as far as metal and bands went.  Matt Hyde has done Slayer, Hatebreed, Deftones, and has won Grammies so it was very cool and intimidating at the same time. The first time we spoke, we hit it off and just had a killer vibe and feel for what we wanted to do.

While being in studio he changed my entire aspect of vocal structure and that´s something I’ve ever done. It was intense, but when you did it his way and heard the result you just wanted to hug him. Also from the drum sound to guitar tones and all his other rules to making killer songs really meshed with us, and our style couldn’t have asked for a better album or person to have worked with.

The new album is entitled ”Up In Hell”. Could you tell us that where have you come up with the title and how does it reflect the album itself?

Richie Cavalera: I think it describes the vibe of the entire album perfectly when you see the cover and the title.  You know immediately you’re in for a killer album from front to back. It was an overall theme of struggle and life and the world as a whole, how crazy shit can get.  I actually came up with the title when I was eight years old in my first band. I was recently moving and found the book I wrote it on. I kind of just hung on to it and when the album was done it’s all that made sense for the record – the perfect title for the cover, for the songs and music.

What can you tell us about the lyrics of the album? What topics are you dealing with it and where have you drawn inspiration to them in general? Do you read a lot of books or watch movies or is it just the fucked up society that inspires you?

Richie Cavalera: It’s just mostly fucked up society and my own personal experiences. I wanted to get more personal with ”Up In Hell” than I have been in previous records. I felt the deeper I went the more real and the more people could relate with what I was letting out. With songs like ”Who Am I”, ”Still Here” and ”Losing Grip” you get to really see my personal life from my point of view and how I’ve felt over the years about important life events. Songs like ”Up In Hell” ”WTF” and ”False Flag” are made forthe government people who try to hurt you in life and just the overall state of humans and our way of life. Everyone is so damn politically correct that I felt I had to talk shit about it on songs like ”Rightful Spot”. I really held nothing back this time around and I guess you can hear it from the lyrics.

What can you tell us about the music on the album? If you compare ”Up In Hell” to your previous ”All Out War” album where there some things that you wanted to do differently for this album that you weren´t so proud of in that old album? What kind of stuff can the fans expect from the new album?

Incite 2014 (1)Richie Cavalera: Yea, to be honest I feel that we have improved in almost every aspect. I loved the last record, but I felt we tried too hard to make those epic long dark songs that just weren’t really Incite.  I think the first album was more where we needed to head just advance in every way. With long songs we really lost the focus on the main riffs and those songs weren´t really us. I think fans can expect heavy grooves so you can just rock out and bang your head, but then we also have these parts, that make you want to just burn shit down and start a war. It’s a killer balance and I believe old and new fans will think this is our best work to date.

How would you describe the album track by track? What´s the story behind each track on the album?

Richie Cavalera:

1. Up In Hell:  ”The opening song on the record needs to be a statement and set the vibe for what’s to come. “Up in hell” is a song about the times that we live in and how people are. I think we are seeing hell on earth and it’s how I see it all. I feel that this song was the perfect opening track to feed the vibe of the rest of the record. This will also be the opening song for our live shows.”

2. WTF:”Next you’re thrown this rage; it’s a song about just being pissed off at someone like friends, and family, random people whatever it may be. It’s the drive fast don’t give a fuck song, explicit lyrics and hateful vibe for sure. I think it’s the best song for the pits and really let’s you vent out shitty day. I wrote this song first, it really was on my chest for awhile. Was killer to hear this one come together and it’s also a song we will be playing live.”

3. False Flag: ”This song is one of my favorites on the album. It’s about government and how they stage major events to keep the larger population under their control. The world is their stage to do what they please to feed into their bigger agenda of ultimate power over us all. They will always do what they want and kill without remorse. I think it shows the groove and thrash blend very strongly on this track.”

4. Fallen:”I think most everyone can relate to losing a loved one or someone close. While we were recording a close friend died and it really fueled this song. I’ve lost a brother, nephew, grandparents, and close friends. It’s a part of life we all must face and it really hit hard for me.  So when I returned back to recording from the funeral I sat down and wrote the lyrics for this track. It was very emotional.”

5. Rightful Spot:  Was awesome to get to team up with Liam from the Cancer Bats, he’s always been a great friend. It’s about haters hating him, hating me, whatever- it’s our fuck you-song to all of them. I love it, it’s just a big middle finger to anyone that talks shit. The lyrics are strong and you really feel the vibe we throw back and forth between the verses. The opening parts just rules, it drops in and all I think about is how sick it is. This song came together after a night of drinking in the hotel room the night before it was supposed to be recorded.”

6. Rise To Greatness:  ”This is a track about my feelings towards the band and where we are at this time. I feel like we’ve paid our dues and it’s time for us to rise to greatness. It’s a very personal song about the band. I think it’s a view from the beginning to now of the band and what I’ve been through, a lot of downs as well as ups. But I see nothing but good things for this band. It’s time for us to rise and be great with the influence we can give the world.”

7. Who Am I:  ”This song is about being someone not really knowing where you’ve come from. I’ve never really known my real father and I think a lot of people feel the same. I don’t care to know him, but it’s always something you think about. To not know your complete history is strange, so I felt it was time to get very personal on this song, and to just not hold back.”

8. Loosing Grip:“Was my story of me and how I feel sometimes. I feel like I’ve worked so hard and I’ve just lost grip of what’s important to me, because I’ve been so focused on the band and been gone for so long. It’s a hard life and it’s not easy mentally or physically, and it just finally got to me. I feel this is more of a song looking in on myself; it was a different perspective for me to write a song this way, it was cool.”

9. Still Here:”This song was the last song I wrote for the album. It’s my song about not giving up even though you really want to. You can never give up on your dreams and what you desire no matter what gets in your way. I believe we all have our purpose and this is mine. No matter what anyone says. I feel like we ourselves can be our worst enemy and I always fight with myself on not being satisfied. So for me it was about not to give up and keep overcoming every hurdle in my way.”

10. To The Depths:  “Was my song about wanting to just kill someone for all their lies and betrayal. A lot of people that have fucked me over or others that feel the same around the world, it was the perfect way to end the record. I think the dark riffs and dark vibe of the song was a nice way to keep people on edge. Album ends and you instantly want to re-start the record. I love the title and the lyrics were cool, start with up in hell and end in the depths. Killer flow.”

So far you have released two songs from the album as singles, ”Fallen” and the title track ”Up In Hell”. How did you end up releasing those specific songs as singles? Did they give the listener a better picture of the album or?

Richie Cavalera: I felt ”Up In Hell” needed to come out first to really lay the ground work for what is to follow.  It’s heavy, it’s groovy, and the lyrics are intense. I felt fans of Incite would love the drums, the riffs and the song overall. Then for ”Fallen” we wanted to show the fans that we have added more leads now and show everyone that we can write songs that don’t have to be just about hate and killing. It’s about losing a loved one and it really hits deep for anyone that’s ever lost someone close. I think they were great tracks to give people the complete vibe they’ll expect with the rest of the music – can’t wait people to hear the whole thing. It’s a record that when it finishes you want to replay the whole thing over and over.

You also have Liam Cormier from Cancer Bats doing a guest appearance for the track ”Rightful Spot”. Could you tell us how did you get him into the studio with you and how did the track turn out?

Richie Cavalera: He recorded in his home town so most of it was done over the phone and email. But it turned out killer I think. When the opening riff kicks in you feel the Incite groove at its peak and it’s really stomping. He’s always been a killer friend and when the time came to talk some shit on a song I knew he would love to be a part of it. We made it about people that bring us down on a regular basis being in a metal band, so it felt awesome to let out some shit with a friend. Hope to do it live whenever we cross paths in the future some time.

During your career you haven´t yet done so much cooperation with different musicians. Do you have some musicians in your mind that you would like to work with in the future? What would be your ultimate choices if you could pick for example three to work with?

Richie Cavalera: Liam was kind of the opening of that door, I’ve always done stuff with Max but felt it was time to bring someone into the Incite family and he was the perfect choice. I would like to have 1 guest for every record from here on out to show metal that we are united, no matter the style of metal you play. It all comes from the same place and all has the same meaning and that’s freedom to create. I definitely want to be on other bands albums as well.  To work with musicians like Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God) or Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies) or people like that would be just awesome. I’m always available so please someone hook it up.

It has been said in many different occasions that the third album is the so called ”career deciding” album for bands. Did you have any extra pressure while writing this album? Do you feel that you have found your own style musically on this album or are you still searching for it?

Richie Cavalera: No I never heard that (laughs). I heard that during the making of our second album. I’ve never felt pressure. When you’re doing something you love and with people you love to create with all that other stuff just fades away. I feel for sure that this album has defined us as our own style and as our own band. I don’t think there are many bands you can truly compare us to in every way and that’s cool, because we just play what we enjoy and what we hope others will love as well.  We really just want to destroy everything and everyone that gets in our path with our music.

Being a stepson for as legendary musician as Max Cavalera also creates some pressure for you. Have you already gotten used to the ”stepson of Max” statements in media when they are talking about Incite? Do you see them as a positive or as a negative thing for the band itself?

Incite Up In Hell 2014Richie Cavalera: I’ve never promoted myself that way or never asked Max to buy me a way.  I’ve worked my ass off over the years and went through so many ups and downs, it’s insane. So it’s just another hurdle to break through which I enjoy a challenge. I think it helps media give fans something to read about and that’s all.  All the fans that have met or seen this band know that we are not bullshit that we are humble, here for all the right reasons and that’s only thing what matters to me. The media will always say what they want and those that have met me no longer say those statements. It’s just part of the job.

Thank you very much for the interview and best of luck for the future. Anything you want to say as a closure to your fans reading the interview?

Richie Cavalera: Thank you so much for the support. Real metal never dies. Go spread the word, tell your friends your family that Incite is coming. Thanks.
