”Olimme kadottaneet identiteettimme” – Haastattelussa uudestisyntynyt Subliminal Fear

Kirjoittanut Aleksi Parkkonen - 10.1.2017

Italialainen melodinen death metal-yhtye Subliminal Fear julkaisi viime vuonna erinomaisen kolmannen albuminsa “Escape From Leviathanin”. Valitettavasti haastattelu jäi vuoden 2016 loppupuolelle eikä sitä ehditty julkaista ennen vuoden vaihdetta, joten haastattelussa vatvotaan viime vuotta. Yhtyeen vokalisti, Carmine Cristallo vastasi bändin kuulumisista, kertoi uudesta albumista sekä kuvaili Subliminal Fearin uudestisyntymistä.

Carmine: Moro kaikille, on huikeaa jutella teille näin loppuvuodesta!

Minkälaisen vastaanoton uusin albuminne ”Escape From Leviathan” on saanut?

Carmine: Olen kanssasi samoilla linjoilla massiivisen melodisuuden suhteen.

”Escape From Leviathanilla” on karmiva kansitaide, jonka on kynäillyt Seth Siron Anton. Olette kuvailleet sivuillanne kansikuvan edustavan levynne sanoituksia. Kertoisitko hieman albumin sanoituksista?

Carmine: Mielestäni Seth Siron Antonin kuvittama kansi on mykistyttävä! Levyn nimi on metafora yhteisöstä pakenemiselle.

Vuonna 2016 moni musiikkimaailman ikoneista poistui keskuudestamme, mm.

Otimme eniten vaikutteita In Flamesiltä, At the Gatesiltä, The Hauntedilta sekä Killswitch Engagelta, muodostamalla niistä omaa. Vuonna 2014 tuntui sille, että otimme uuden luvun yhtyeemme elämässä ja muutosta seurasi ”Escape From Leviathan”. En oikeastaan osaa mainita mitkä yhtyeet vaikuttivat eniten kolmannen albumin kohdalla…

Etenkin jäsenten pysyvyys on puuttunut.

Iron Maidenin nimikkolevy ja Metallican ”Master Of Puppets” olivat ensimmäisiä joita kuuntelin. Muistan edelleen miltä tuntui kuunnella niitä ensimmäistä kertaa!

Nimeä yksi festari jolla haluaisit soittaa.

Carmine: Suomessa olisi mahtava esiintyä! Levy-yhtiömme Inverse Records on suomalainen ja suomalaiset fanimme kehuvat maatanne festarien suhteen. Festarit kuten Tuska, John Smith tai Nummirock olisivat hienoa kokea ja odotamme kovasti Suomeen tuloa!

Millaiset ovat Subliminal Fearin vuoden 2017 suunnitelmat?

Carmine: Tavoitteenamme on soittaa mahdollisimman paljon keikkoja ja mainostaa uusinta levyämme. Olemme istuneet studion uumenissa pitkään ja haluamme päästä jo esiintymään. Jossain vaiheessa alamme myös suunnitella uutta musiikkia…

Kiitoksia ajastasi Carmine! Haluaisitko lähettää terveiset lukijoille? Puhu vapaasti.

Carmine: Kiitos itsellesi! Haluamme lähettää erityiskiitokset Kaaoszinen lukijoille! Toivottavasti pidätte ”Escape From Leviathanista” ja lupaan, että näemme lähitulevaisuudessa! Kiitos!

Italish melodic death metal band Subliminal Fear released band’s excellent third album in last spring. Unfortunately interview were done in the end of the year 2016, so in interview would be discussed last years things. Subliminal Fear’s vocalist Carmine Cristallo talks in interview about band and its history. Cristallo also tolds about third album and describes band’s “rebirth”.

The year 2016 has almost reached its end. If you take look back to whole year how has year 2016 been to Subliminal Fear?

Carmine: Hello to all of you, it’s a very pleasure to talk with you at the end of this year! Yes! 2016 is been a very important year for Subliminal Fear, cause the release of “Escape from Leviathan” represents for us a rebirth like band. After several years in studio, finally we are back with new material and a “new skin” with so many novelties. We needed to change our musical direction because we didn’t recognize it anymore in the standard cliché of melodic death metal in the way we played in the past. I think the new album has a very clear defined personality and an important step for our musical path. If I look in the past years, when we started this project, I realize how many things they are changed in our musical tastes and the way to write songs. I think it’s a natural process. Then the band had some line-up changes and finally we bring our music around on the road. This year is been really positive for us and we are enthusiastic to start a new year with the same energies!

What kind of response has your new album got so far?

Carmine: Yes, finally! We were waiting to release this new material and we were so curious to see what people would have said and thought about all these changes. In our country and in others, the new album is receiving good responses. It’s a confirmation that all that we wanted to plan for our music is been the right evolution for us.

When I take a look to your third album’s tracklist, I can notice that you have first time additional singers on your album. Guests are from Danish Mnemic (Guillaume Bideau), Swedish Darkane (Lawrance Mackrory) and Threat Signal/Arkaea (Jon Howard). Why did you take other singers on your album this time?

Carmine: On “Escape From Leviathan” you can find 3 special guests. All of them are great vocalists and we are great fans of them, listening and following their bands and projects. All album’s songs are different but part of the same thematic, some tracks are aggressive and some of them more melodic, so with different solutions. We wanted to insert also something more different than this in some of them, to characterize more these songs with their skills and styles. Their presence is really an additional value, they liked our songs and to be in this album. It’s something make us very proud.

When I’m listening your new album and comparing it to older ones, I think “Escape From Leviathan” is more melodic and maybe not so brutal as previously albums. How do you see this? How does third album makes difference to older albums?

Carmine: I agree about the massive presence of melodies on this album, it’s something we worked on and it was planned. Like I said previously, we tried to go far from normal cliché of melodic death metal and we insert new and modern influences like electronic music or more groovy guitar riffs. The main difference is our work’s approach: free from schemes and with a more professional way to reach our goals and to compose music in our studio. On the new album, the melodies are dramatic and futuristic in line with lyrics thematic and the aggressive side of our old sound is been replaced by something more hidden and psychological. Atmospheres are darker and cold and for me the music on this album represents what we are now perfectly. Maybe for the next album we will keep all this dramatic and dark atmospheres and we will combine them also with something more aggressive and extreme… Who knows? We are opened to changes, like you can see from this new album. This is our evolution and we will continue to develop our sound.

“Escape From Leviathan” has quite creepy cover art which is made by Seth Siro Anton. You have mentioned on your websites that art work represents album’s lyrics. Can you tell more about lyrics of this album?

Carmine: I think the artwork of the album realized by Seth Siro Anthon is absolutely amazing! Seth didn’t disappoint the expectations. The artwork of the album and its cover reflect the lyrics in all aspects. That you will find in the songs it’s not exactly a story but many stories all linked between them. ”Escape from Leviathan” is a metaphor of the escape from our society. It has imagined like a primordial and evolved creature, ready to devour us if we are not part of this wrong and dystopian design. The concept talks about a society that guides us and control us with new technologies or fake ideologies. Humans are not conscious for evil they do each other and also about society and machines that control them subconsciously. There are also some references about humanity’s impossibility to govern itself. For inspiration I used also of course famous sci-fi movies but also my personal thoughts about the present society.

In year 2016 many great artists have been passed away like David Bowie and Prince.  Recently also Status Quo’s guitarist Rick Parfitt and Malice’s guitarist Mick Zane. It is always sad when people passed away but luckily music lives forever. Which artists and bands have had most influence to your music? I guess those also influenced to Subliminal Fear’s sound when band was formed in 2002?

Carmine: Yes, it’s been a real black year for the music, started with Lemmy Kilmister and finished with George Michael. I agree their music will live forever. In 2002 and when we started this project we played a melodic death metal with Swedish and some metal-core and thrash metal influences. We were looking to bands such In Flames, At the Gates, The Haunted, Killswitch Engage for example and we wanted to emulate them. In the beginning of 2014 we felt like we were starting with a new life for the band and the new album “Escape from Leviathan” is the result of our evolution. Exactly I can’t to mention the real bands that influenced us in this new evolution, we listen so many bands and kind of music now!

If you take a look back to time when you formed the band, how would you described Subliminal Fear’s lifetime? It hasn’t always been just happy and easy days I guess?

Carmine: Not at all! We have played together in this project from so many years but we never had a good stability, especially in the line up to concretize all our projects. Me and Domenico left the band for some years and this has slowed our growth like band. In the 2014 when we came back and we started to work on new material; we felt it like it was the right moment for us to restart. Now, we are in the most positive moment for us and we can do all that we couldn’t before.

What has been the greatest thing in your band’s career so far?

Carmine: Of course it’s been to have first live experiences with great international acts like Testament or Dark Funeral. But like I said it’s just the beginning for us… we are ready to live as reborners and always experience more great things.

Do you still remember what album or artist was the first that has “blown” your mind?

Carmine: It’s hard to choose just one! I can mention of Iron Maiden, Metallica and In Flames. Iron Maiden self-title album or Master of Puppets from Metallica has been the first metal albums ever I listened and I would never forget about that how I felt when I listened them first time.

Name one festival where you would like to play.

Carmine: Well, Finland is one of the countries that I would love to play so far! Our label Inverse Records is Finnish and our fans always talk to us about how Finland is a great place to play in.  Tuska, John Smith Fest or Nummirock are really amazing and we are looking to come there in future, I hope it very soon!

What kind of plans does Subliminal Fear has for 2017?

Carmine: Our plan for 2017 is to play so much we can and to promote “Escape from Leviathan”. We have spent so much time in studio and now we want to jump around a bit! Soon we would think about new material…

Thanks for your time Carmine! Would you like to send some greetings to finnish readers? Speak freely please!

Carmine: Thanks to you! We send special greetings to all Kaaoszine readers, I hope they liked our new album and I promise very soon we will come there to play our music. Kiitos!
