Moro! Kuinkas Stone Cold Deadin vuosi 2017 on sujunut?

George: Vuosi 2017 on sujunut tähän saakka sulavasti. Tällä hetkellä teemme EP:tä, jonka toivon mukaan saamme julkaistua ensi vuoden alussa. Viime vuosi oli meille tuotteliaampi, koska teimme kaksi cover-kappaletta kreikkalaista Metal Hammer -musiikkilehteä varten. Nämä kappaleet julkaistaan kokoelmalevyillä. Ensimmäiseksi teimme tribuutin Motörheadin kappaleesta ”In The Name Of Tragedy”. Kappaleen nimi on ”This Is U”, ja julkaisimme sen vastikään youtube-kanavallamme.

Tämän eron huomaa jo ”This IS U” -kappaleesta.

Seuraavaksi haluan palata debyyttinne ”Lava Flows”.

Kolmen rumpalin tarve syntyi albumin tarpeista. Charis olisi suunnitellut asiaa jo pidemmän aikaa. ”Lava Flowsilla” on kolme osaa, joita varten jokainen rumpali soittaa kolme kappaletta. Ensimmäisen ”Stone”-osan kolme kappaletta soittaa Yannis Stavropoulos, toisen osan “Cold” kappaleet Dimitrios Dorian (Zemial) ja kolmannen osan eli ”Deadin” soittaa George Kollias (Nile).

Onko rock sinusta kuollut?

George: Ehdottomasti Gojira!

Charis: Tällä hetkellä Stone Cold Dead on studiobändi, sillä haluamme keskittyä musiikin luomiseen.

Näin tekevät esimerkiksi Dream Theater ja The Scorpions.

Suurimmaksi osaksi siinä on kyse rahastamisesta.

Aiomme kehittää kolmea kappaletta debyytiltämme sähköakustisella tavalla ja lisätä ”This Is U” -kappaleen siihen.

Kiitoksia ajastanne! Haluaisitteko laittaa lukijoille terveisiä?

George: Haluamme kiittää sinua Aleksi tästä haastattelusta ja tuestasi ”Lava Flowsia” kohtaan. Toki haluamme kiittää kaikkia Kaooszinen lukijoita. Tutustukaa meihin sosiaalisen median kautta, ja jos haluatte ostaa albumin, käyttäkää alla olevia linkkejä.

I found recently interesting Greek band called Stone Cold Dead. I noticed that they had release a debut album in the end of 2015. Band’s music made me curious so I had to get known better to their album. After that I got chance to talk with Stone Cold Dead’s singer-guitarist George Bokos and contrabassist Charis Pazaroulas. George and Charis described the debut album’s process and they told me the reason they had three drummers on the album. Guys also mentioned how rock and metal are doing in Greece and what they think about old bands album tours.

Hi guys! How has the year 2017 been so far for Stone Cold Dead?

George: Well, 2017 has been running smooth till now. At the moment we are working on a EP which we are hoping to release early next year. Last year was more creative for us, as we made two tribute songs for compilation CDs published by the Greek Metal Hammer magazine. First, we covered Motörhead’s song called “In The Name Of Tragedy”. I like more the older Motörhead stuff but this newer song was more close to our stuff so we choose a direction that was more of a challenge for us. We didn’t want to just play a cover song, we wanted to leave our mark on it. After a while we made another one cover for Greek metal band called Nightstalker, for the song “This is U”. We have just released this cover on our YouTube channel and it’s also going to be included on our physical EP release.

Actually I was going to ask when you’re going to create music but here it came.

George: The new music will be different than on “Lava Flows”. You can hear the difference on “This is U”. On this song we didn’t use a typical drum set but percussive contrabass sounds and the entire song is based on Charis’ contrabass ideas. The vibe is dark, atmospheric and meditative. We felt that this is the sound we want to do next and on next EP we’re going to that direction. In Stone Cold Dead we feel ourselves free to create music as we please and we don’t let anything to chain us.

Then I’d like to go back to your debut album “Lava Flows”. The album has a really interesting and groovy sound and I’m wondering where did this all came from?

George: I would say that this came from our influences that were driven by inspiration. Our music is a groove-based combination of metal and rock and blues music with progressive elements using growling vocals as a melodic effect. I personally get inspiration from the nature, mostly from mountains, rocks and volcanoes but also from other music that I am listening to, or even other musicians as performers and as characters. The most interesting thing is that you never know when that magic moment comes. You can be sitting in the studio with no ideas and suddenly ideas start to flow and you create something that at first place you haven’t prepared. Actually the whole album started like that, from demos and ideas. After that me and Charis began to build the structures of the album and work on every little detail of it. The beauty to me is, that even a sound from a metallic object or walk in the city can inspire you to make music. ”Lava Flows” includes many of these moments that came without a call and transformed later on, into riffs, sonic experimentations, vocal lines, lyrics and heavy grooves that will move you like an earthmover moves the earth’s ground … So this is how it worked for us.

On “Lava Flows” album you have three different drummers. How did you end up with this idea?

George: Indeed, and to me this is something that makes this album very unique. We didn’t do that on purpose or in order to make impression. The reason was the concept of the album itself. The idea came up by the needs of Charis’ concept which he was developing at that time. “Lava Flows” has three parts. Each drummer recorded his own part which includes three songs. Yannis Stavropoulos is behind the Stone-part, Dimitrios Dorian (Zemial) performed the Cold-part and the Dead-part has been recorded by George Kollias (Nile).

Charis: It was a very challenging idea to have three drummers and each one to perform on a different part of the album. This is how we wanted to support our concept story. These parts actually represent the three different cosmic levels: the Underworld, the Terrestrial World and the Upper World. Furthermore, the triptych idea is also connected to the band’s name, which has the three words – Stone, Cold, Dead.

Your band has a personal sound and I have to ask, which bands have influenced you the most?

George: I think you can connect our music to bands like Gojira, Mastodon, Tool, Rob Zombie, Grip Inc., Meshuggah and Sepultura. Perhaps and with some old progressive rock bands from 70’s.

In Finland we have a lot of metal and rock bands but what kind of situation do you have in Greece?

George: First of all, I have to agree that in Finland you have lots of excellent metal bands. In Greece the things have changed during the last 5-10 years. I mean you might know well-known bands like Rotting Christ, Nightfall, Septic Flesh and Firewind. Especially, Rotting Christ is the most well-known band out of Greece and I was part of that for seven years. And I was also member of Nightfall four years. In the last 5-10 years, the bands have changed their attitude to music making – it’s more serious and professional now. Bands have involved their working and album producing and everything has made by higher standards.

Also there are many more bands nowadays that could play shows for two thousand people. The Greek metal scene has enlarged but also more people have found heavy music. Many Greek bands have released awesome albums during this dark period we living in. Art is always flourishing in these kind of circumstances! Last ten years has been like an explosion! Metal is doing well in Greece and it’s a very good thing.

If you think rock and metal music as world wide there has been some setbacks: many great artists has passed away recently. Do you think rock ‘n’ roll is dead?

George: Unfortunately, we are living in a period of time that many of the most significant rock and metal artists are passing away… But I think rock ‘n’ roll is not dead. Definitely not. I think this kind of opinion is coming more from people who have lived the times of huge, stadium rock concerts in 80’s and 90’s. Nowadays the bands which have huge audiences are also from those times, like Guns ‘N’ Roses, Metallica and Rolling Stones. If somebody is connecting to huge arena shows to rock bands, okey, maybe. But this is not the most important aspect of the rock. And from the other aspect is that times are changing: Nowadays people can found thousands of bands from the internet. Also people are now listening very fast, one song from there and another from there. There is so much bands and music that in my opinion, it is the reason why the huge stadium concerts are not happening nowadays like in the 80’s and 90’s. Rock bands are not anymore connected to huge arena shows. But I think rock is doing very well, there is a lot of different and really good rock music coming all around to world which people can listen to.

If you could choose one band that you would like to tour with, which band it would be?

Charis: I guess my choice would be Gojira.

George: Definitely Gojira! They were playing to Athens Rockwave Festival two days ago and they’re amazing guys! They play really well and their shows are simply outstanding!

What about Stone Cold Dead’s upcoming gigs?

George: We haven’t play gigs yet because our day jobs are taking a lot of time. Thankfully we both have jobs which are connected to music. I am working as a producer and engineer and have my own studio more than 10 years now which is called Grindhouse Studios Athens and Charis is collaborating with symphony orchestras and music ensembles as a double bass player.

Charis: At the moment Stone Cold Dead is a studio band and we’re focusing on making and recording our own music. Unfortunately, we don’t have the proper time to focus ourselves on live music making, but when this time will come, I’m sure will be of a great pleasure!

Nowadays some old rock and metal bands, like Dream Theater and Scorpions are making tours, where they’re playing their classic albums. The Scorpions is about play “Crazy World” on their next tour. What do you think about this idea?

George: I think it depends on from different views. If you’re fan of the band and love that album that they’re playing, then it’s great opportunity. Talking about the The Scorpions… The last 15 years they have been doing this farewell tour. To me it’s not bad idea play one album through but I would like to hear some other songs from the band. If the album is like 50 minutes long, to me it’s too short for a show unless it’s we are talking about “The Wall”, which was an awesome and unforgettable show in my opinion.

Charis: I’m not a big fan of those album tours. Most of the time it’s about marketing and how to sell a product, which has been made many years ago but… every time depends on the quality of the album and the musical approach of the band. Personally, I like more to focus on things which are happening now. From that point of view, I’m not a great fan of museums either!

What about Stone Cold Dead’s future? Like George mentioned before you’re now focusing on EP.

Charis: Yes, that’s what we’re doing at the moment. We’re working on a 4-track EP of groovy and experimental rock/metal music. Our main focus is to reinvent 3 songs of “Lava Flows” with an electro-acoustic orientation and include the “This is U” cover as the fourth track. Most probably, the release will take place next year via our own label Volcanic Music and afterwards we’ll start making plans for our next full-length album.

Thanks for your time guys! Do you want to send greetings to readers?

George: We would like to thank you Aleksi for this great interview and for supporting our debut album ”Lava Flows”. And of course all the readers of Kaaoszine. Check out our social media and if you like our music purchase our album through the links above this english text.
