Scar Of The Sun: ”Musiikkiteollisuus ei luota kreikkalaisiin yhtyeisiin”

Kirjoittanut Aleksi Parkkonen - 1.12.2016

scar-of-the-sun04Kreikkalainen Scar Of The Sun julkaisi toisen albuminsa, “In Floodin” tämän vuoden toukukuussa. Yhtye on tällä hetkellä tekemässä uusia kappaleita ja siirtyykin äänittämään seuraavaa pitkäsoittoaan studioon tässä kuussa. Kaaoszine sai mahdollisuuden haastatella yhtyeen vokalistia Terry Nikasta. Haastattelussa Nikas avartaa yhtyeen tulevasta albumista, vertaa sitä kahteen edelliseen julkaisuun sekä kuvailee kuinka poliittinen ja taloudellinen tilanne Kreikassa heijastuvat maan metalli-yhtyeisiin. Jos pidät Bring Me The Horizonin, Tesseractin tai Archtitectsin kaltaisista yhtyeistä, kannattaa sinun ehdottomasti tutustua Scar Of The Suniin, sillä tämä yhtye tekee hyvää musiikkia.

(English version below)

Hei Terry! Kuinkas yhtyeenne vuosi on mennyt tähän mennessä?

Olemme soittaneet useita covereita keikoillamme, kuten Killswitch Engagen The End Of Heartache”, Paradise Lostin No Celebration” ja mielenkiintoisin on ollut  Dion “Egypt – The Chains Are On”, jota muutin melko paljon.

Aiotteko jatkaa kolmannen levyn kannessa samalla teemalla?

Artikkeli jatkuu mainoksen jälkeen

Terry: Aiomme jatkaa samalla teemalla tulevan albuminkin suhteen. Lisäksi sen kautta ihmiset tunnistavat kyseessä olevan Scar Of The Sun.

Silloin meitä inspiroineet yhtyeet olivat Orphaned Landin ja Funeral For A Friendin kaltaiset yhtyeet, koska heillä oli uusi soundi, jossa he sekoittivat monia elementtejä yhteen.

Mielestäni on hauskempaa piilottaa merkitys rivien väliin, jonka takia ihmiset tulevat kyselemään niistä.

Terry: Ennen ensimmäistä albumia olin ottanut klassisen laulutyylin tunteja jo vuosia.

Millainen musiikillinen ilmapiiri on kotimaassasi?

Scar Of The Sunissa me teemme paljon töitä ja olemme kurinalaisia, mutta silti jotkut vähättelevät meitä yhtyeenä.

Joten underground-musiikki on huomattavasti parempaa.

scar-of-the-sun01

TessaracT ja Bring Me The Horizon olisivat myös upeita kiertuekavereita.

Terry: Haluamme julkaista tulevan albumin ehdottomasti vuonna 2017.

Kiitos Terry!

The Greek band Scar Of The Sun released their second album “In Flood” in May 2016. SOTS is now composing new material for their next album and they will start recordings this month. Kaaoszine had the opportunite to interview the band’s singer Terry Nikas. In this interview Nikas spoke about their upcoming album, he compared it to their previous two albums and he also described how the political and the economical situation reflected on Greece’s metal scene. If you’re a metalhead and like bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Tesseract or Architects, you should definitely get to know with Scar Of The Sun, because this band is hard working and makes great metal music.

Hi Terry! First I’d like to ask how has year 2016 been for Scar Of The Sun?

Terry: The beginning of the year was very busy because we released our second album “In Flood” at the end of May. At the same time we gave a lot of interviews and we also prepared our next year’s tour with Firewind and Manimal. The tour will focus on central Europe and England and it will start in February 2017. The period between May and June was extremely busy and also this fall has been busy ‘cause now we’re preparing to record our third album. We have been busy but it’s all about the band – we aren’t lazy people, we like to be busy.

You recently gave little heads up to me about your upcoming album, so could you tell us a little bit about your third album?

Terry: Sure! First of all it would be quite different than our previous albums. I think many people will be surprised about our changes, but we’re okey with it. We like to do things different, we don’t want to release the same album twice. We like to use different elements and I have to admit that this album is going to be heavier than last two albums. The vocals will be more brutal and you won’t hear so much clean vocals like in the past. This album won’t have many different tracks to each other in style, like our previous albums did have. It’s not a bad thing – I think that the album is more focused to one direction and the songs match together better.

Like you said, SOTS like to do things differently and not to release same album twice, do you thing SOTS has found its own sound in this upcoming album? Or do you think that you have had found that sound earlier?

Terry: I think that this third album is in the direction where the band wants to go finally. The first two albums were not so cohesive. Everyone in the band though is growing up and things have changed. You can see this third album as a turning point in our music and it is like a foretaste for our fourth album. But yes, like I said I think this third album is going to show the way where SOTS is heading in the future.

You also mentioned before that you have been using different elements in your first two albums, like orchestral arrangements and additional singers in the debut album and cover song in second album. Are we going to hear something like this on upcoming album or perfectly something different?

Terry: There won’t be definitely a cover song in this album, but it isn’t a thing that we won’t do in the future. We have this idea to make an e.p. or something like that with four or five songs which would be covers. It’s a bit early to talk about – it’s more like future plans. And when it comes to guests we don’t know yet. There is a big possibility to do things our own way, but we worked on a song with Bob Katsionis from Firewind. Bob has been working on our previous albums so he would be involved in this one too. So far it’s going to look like this but we haven’t begun recordings yet so you never know.

Well I have to say that I really liked the cover song of Depeche Mode’s “Walking In My Shoes” and I’m looking for that cover ep, which you’re about to release someday.

Terry: Thank you, I have to say that the original song is awesome and it’s like our tribute to that huge band. We did some covers in some past gigs and have covered Killswitch Engage’s The End Of Heartache”, Paradise Lost’s No Celebration” and the most interesting cover so far (which we changed a lot) was Dio’s “Egypt – The Chains Are On”. It’s an amazing song and I hope we’re going to record it someday.

The debut album and “In Flood” has an amazing cover arts which reminds me Greek’s mythology. Is the third album also going to have same kind of cover art?

Terry: Yes we’re going to continue the same theme on third album. The cover art and all the visuals are made by our original drummer Achilleas Gatsopoulos. He isn’t part of the band anymore ‘cause he is a professional director/graphic designer – he does album covers, music videos, he is a photographer too and he does a lot of things around art. He is my best friend and his brother is our bassist, Panagiotis Gatsopoulos. We want to carry on this thing ‘cause it’s a part of our identity and brand, when you see it you know it’s Scar Of The Sun.

I noticed that you engineered, recorded and edited band’s second album, why did you do that?

Terry: Well I’m a professional sound engineer and I have my own studio, which is a really good thing for SOTS ‘cause we don’t have to worry about budgets and stuff. In our third album I will record and mix the whole album. I have worked with many bands in the metal scene like Suicidal Angels, Firewind and Ravencult and I just finished the new Nightrage album. I’m also the sound engineer of Septic Flesh. I’m working with them on gigs and they’re entering my studios (Zero Gravity Studios) in December to record their new album. That’s basically what I do for living.

“In Flood” has been released six months ago and you’re now planning to record your new album. Did you have some songs left from “In Flood’s” recording sessions or have you just been creative recently?

Terry: We had one song left from the recordings, but it seems that we won’t use it, because it’s not in the spirit of the rest of the album. That song includes some elements that are little bit too old for our band’s new sound, so some members of SOTS’s had doubts about using it. We aren’t that kind of band which makes 20 songs, choose the 10 best tracks from then and puts the rest of the songs away. We focus on songs that we really like and if something doesn’t work we won’t finish it. Of course sometimes there are some cool melodies and riffs that doesn’t come in the album, but then we work on them and sometimes we use them on the next album.

scar-of-the-sunLike you already told that band’s music has evolved in years, but I would like to know how would you describe SOTS’s growing and evolving from the past to present?

Terry: When band started about 8-9 years ago and since the beginning, we decided that we wouldn’t be just a local band that plays some local gigs and is happy by drinking beer. The band started in London and we had the vision to tour a lot. Bands like Orphaned Land and Funeral For A Friend gave the vision, because they had a new sound that was combining many different elements in their music. They had heavy parts, pop parts and some epic/symphonic parts but also modern elements. Those bands influenced a lot SOTS and that’s why our sound has also such diversity.

Our first album was more atmospheric metal than the second one and more gothic. That was the thing we wanted to do at the time. Years past and people are changing, so does the band. On our second album we wanted to have a heavier sound but also more catchy and modern. We want to make music that everyone is able to listen, not just the metalheads. Easy to access to everybody, that’s the main thing for SOTS. From that aspect the band has evolved through the years – we became better artists and even the band’s music has changed. The main idea of Scar Of The Sun’s music hasn’t changed. Also the line-up of the band has been the same for seven years, which helps a lot and we know each other very well. When you’re changing a lot of members in a band it’s easy to lose the spirit.

Then I’d like to ask about to lyrics. Seems like you’re writing them. Mostly SOTS’s lyrics seem to be dark and deep and I don’t always understand them perfectly. What kind of things inspires you in the writing process?

Terry: The fact that you don’t understand all the lyrics is because I don’t like to write directly. It’s nicer the hide the true meaning between the sentences ‘cause then people make questions and ask me about them. When we started the band I was going through some very difficult times, so the album talks about a personal disaster, if you want to call it that way. It was really difficult time for me so the first album reflects that situation. That album was a kind of a healing process for me.

Now our second album is much angrier because I was influenced by the political situation in Greece. I’m upset with the fact that the financial interests are destroying Greece or any country that wants to react to their destruction and on top of that, most of the people outside Greece think that we are just lazy and we are just getting their money, which is not true at all! It is really shallow to think that 10 million people in Greece are just drinking coffee under the sun and doing nothing and all the others are working hard. Actually, officialy, Greeks work more than any other people in Europe, it’s an official statistic, but no-one talks about that in Europe. People don’t see the big picture – it is much deeper and not so simple than many people think. People are in a very hard situation over here – there is a lot of poor people, over 600.000 children do not get enough food and at the same time people are pointing the finger at us. On the other hand, we do have corrupted politicians but Greece isn’t the only country in the world that has corruption, actually all the politicians are corrupted in the whole world, let’s just face the truth, even if it hurts. It is really sad that people blame one nation and treat it like the black sheep of Europe. Luckily things are now much better ‘cause people started to realize what is going on in Greece and their eyes start to be wide open. These are the things I’m talking about in “In Flood”. The word “Flood” actually describes the fact that the whole world is in deep confussion right now, even those who think that they got things under control.

Wow, there came a lot of information to think about. Then back to the band. You’re going to tour with Firewind and Manimal in next February. You also mentioned that you’re good friend with Bob Katsionis from Firewind. How did you meet these guys?

Terry: We haven’t met the guys from Manimal so this is the first time we’ll see them, but Firewind have been good friends for a long time. The whole thing started when I was working for Century Media, London and since Firewind have a contract with Century Media I got to work with them too. I met Gus G and it was long time before he began to play guitar for Ozzy Osbourne. He is a really good friend of mine and through him I met the rest of the band. When I noticed that they will be on tour, I contacted Gus and Bob and they offered us the slot. In 2011 we opened a show for them in Athens, they have recorded in my studio, so we know each other a lot and we are really looking forward for this tour!

When I’m listening to your albums, I see that your singing has improved by the years. Have you taken singing lessons or how do you exercise your voice?

Terry: I have done classical singing lessons many years before the first album, then I did seven years of modern singing and now I’m doing brutal vocals lessons too. I have studied singing more than ten years overall. The thing is that the inspiration for our first album was bands like Tiamat or Type O Negative for example. If you listen to those bands you may notice that my singing is more close to that kind of singing. On our second album I was inspired by singers like the Killswitch Engage’s ex-singer Howard Jones (which is my favorite singer right now), or even the Soilwork singer Björd Strid. This is why the vocals have changed. Also the studio and live experience effected my singing a lot of course.

How is metal doing in Greece and what kind of music is mainstream in your home land?

Terry: Metal is huge in undergroung-level but the main problem is that metal bands from Greece have to finance everything by themselves. So that makes things really difficult. But on the other hand, there are many bands coming from Sweden, Norway or Finland that are getting funded by their government or from the town they live. This is an amazing thing and it shows a really high civilization level. On the other hand in Greece we have a very bad financial situation and the bands get help from no one. This is the reason why many bands stay in Greece even if they’re really good. So because bands don’t have money and opportunities to go international, it is many many times harder for Greek band to succeed than Swedish or Finnish bands. A major problem also for bands from Greece is that band is from Greece! I mean that there are many people in the music industry that don’t believe in Greek bands (for no reason really, which is quite racistic) and they don’t give real chances to Greek bands. We’re doing a lot of work for this band and we’re serious and even still some people just don’t wanna see it – it is really insulting, if you ask me. Cause you know, good music is not just coming from Central and Northern Europe or North America! There is a lot of talent down here, that doesn’t get chances because of our country of origin and not because we are not good enough! I can tell you, I see more than 50-60% of bands that have a proper career that are less talented than many bands that I know and they are “unlucky” to be Greek. I know they don’t even listen to our albums when we send them to them and even if they do, they are prejudiced enough to reject them, when at the same time they sign much much worse bands. That’s 100% fact unfortunatelly, I have seen it with my eyes many times! And it’s also about who you know. If you have the right friends and contacts and you come from the “correct” country, you’ll get more chances.

The mainstream music in Greece is some kind of folk music which is mixed with pop and no one in the metal or rock scene likes that at all. It’s quite cheesy really. So mainstream music in Greece is bad, but the underground is doing well.

If you could tour the whole world which three bands would be the bands that you would like to tour  with?

Terry: My favorite band for last couple years has been the English band Architects and it is my dream to tour with them someday. And also TessaracT and Bring Me The Horizon would be awesome tour mates! These band are really close to my music taste and if you listen to our next album closely you can hear that our sound is getting closer to that kind of metal. Of course there are also other bands like Killswitch Engage, Rammstein, Darkest Hour, or Trivium which would be amazing to tour with, even it’s really hard to happen. But if you ask for only one band, I would say Architects.

When you have finished your tour with Firewind and Manimal and recorded your next album, what would be SOTS’s next move?

Terry: We want to release our third album in 2017 definitely. After we finish the recording and the mixing (which it would be around April), we have to discuss with our label, Scarlet Records, for the schedule of the album release. We’re hoping to release it in September or in October. Then we will also made two videos from that album. Obviously, since we love to play live, we’ll tour and we’re hoping to get gigs on Summer Festivals, like the Ilosaarirock!

Thanks Terry for your time! Would you send some greetings to readers?

Terry: Finland is an ideal land for metal – you got some amazing bands like Amorphis that is one of my favorite band ever! We’re also good friends with Swallow The Sun which is also a really great band and they’re also very nice guys. I also want to encourage the finnish readers to listen to our music, ‘cause it’s influenced by metal bands from your scene too. And I believe that readers will find many things in our music they will like. Please, listen deeply with no prejudice, with an open mind and I think there are many chances to find elements in our music that you will appreciate. We’re really hoping to get in Finland this summer to play live and get to known the finnish people. It would be really awesome and everybody will have a great time!
