Legendaarinen, black metallin isänä pidetty brittiläisyhtye Venom on tehnyt hyvin mittavan ja tuotteliaan uran metallin parissa. Yhtye julkaisi järjestyksessään 14. albuminsa ”From the Very Depths” 26. tammikuuta Spinefarm Recordsin kautta. Kaaoszine tavoitti bändin rumpali Dantén, jonka kanssa keskustelimme mm. bändin uusimmasta albumista sekä yhtyeen mittavasta urasta.

Terve! Miten vuosi 2015 on lähtenyt Venomilla käyntiin?

Danté: Tämä vuosi alkoi loistavasti uuden albumin ilmestymisellä, ja olemme saaneet siitä mahtavaa palautetta, hienoja arvosteluja. Juuri ennen levyn julkaisua kävimme Amerikassa 70 000 Tons of Metal -festareilla, joka on siis heavy metal -risteily Miamista Jamaikalle. Se on järjestetty nyt viitenä vuotena ja sen suosio kasvaa joka vuosi; tänä vuonna se oli jopa siirretty suuremmalle laivalle. Vaikka se on vielä nimeltään 70 000 Tons of Metal, se on todellisuudessa 125 000 tonnia metallia, paljon suurempi. Bändien määrä on noussut 42:sta 60:een, ja jokainen bändi soitti kaksi keikkaa laivalla, joten siellä oli paljon musiikkia tarjolla koko ajan. Olimme katsomassa bändejä 5 – 6 aikaan aamulla, se oli mahtava tapahtuma.

Laivalla on neljä varsinaista esiintymispaikkaa, joten jokaiselle on jotakin, mikä oli uskomatonta. Meillä oli tavallaan sellainen erikoisjuttu meneillään laivalla: ensimmäisellä keikallamme vedimme klassisen Venom-setin, johon oli heitetty jotain suurin piirtein 30 viime vuoden ajalta. Sitten soitimme uuden albumimme kokonaisuudessaan. Ihmiset eivät olleet kuulleet sitä aiemmin, joten se oli aika hermoja raastavaa, mutta se meni todella hienosti, meillä oli todella hauskaa.

Ja meidät kaikki kolme, minut, Cronos ja Rage, oli kutsuttu soittamaan all-star-jameihin, jotka Annihilatorin herra Jeff Waters järjestää joka vuosi. Koska laiva oli suurempi, myös tämä tapahtuma oli kasvanut ja Cronos itse asiassa kertoi minulle eilen, että saimme Jeffiltä kiitosmailin, kun osallistuimme laivan suurimmalle keikalle. Siellä oli enemmän ihmisiä kuin millään muulla keikalla laivalla. Se oli todella hauska juttu tehdä, Cronos soitti Motörheadin ”Ace of Spadesin” ja Black Sabbathin ”Paranoidin”, ja tietenkin joka biisiä varten ihmiset lavalla vaihtuivat, joten se oli tavallaan järjestäytynyttä kaaosta, mutta se todella toimi. Minä soitin Michael Schenkerin Temple of Rockin tyyppien ja Primal Fearin Rolfin kanssa, Max Cavalera lauloi Panteran ”Walkin” ja niin edelleen. Siellä oli todella hyvä, hauska biletunnelma ja fanit rakastivat sitä. Se on joka puolella netissä ja Youtubessa, jos haluaa tsekata. Ja kuten sanoin, levy julkaistiin tammikuussa ja olemme saaneet todella, todella positiivisia ja mahtavia arvosteluja, joten tähän mennessä kaikki on mennyt hyvin.

Viimeisin kokopitkänne ”From the Very Dephts” julkaistiin 26. tammikuuta. Mitkä ovat omat ajatuksesi albumista?

Danté: Noh, mielestäni se on kehitystä ”Fallen Angelsista”, jonka julkaisimme vuonna 2011. Se oli ensimmäinen albumini Venomissa, koska liityin bändiin vuonna 2009. Meillä oli muutama vuosi aikaa kasvaa yhteen muusikkoina ja tutustua toisiimme, soittaa keikkoja ympäri maailmaa vuosina 2009 – 2011. Äänitimme albumin vuonna 2011, ja se oli hyvin erityistä aikaa minulle, sillä se oli ensimmäinen albumini Venomin kanssa ja se onnistui todella hyvin. Olemme todella tyytyväisiä siihen.

Heti kun levy oli julkaistu, työstimme jo uutta albumia, joten olemme tavallaan kirjoittaneet nonstoppina muutaman viime vuoden ajan. Se tapahtuu niin, että kaikki kolme bändin jäsentä tavallaan lyövät ideansa tiskiin ja työstämme niitä yhdessä. Sitten kun on sen aika, saatamme laittaa äänitykset käyntiin ja pistämme jamit pystyyn. Kaikki alkaa riffistä, jonka olemme keksineet. Vaikka jotain olisi suunniteltukin, se voi olla vain spontaania soittamista, kaikki soittavat mukana ja äänitämme sen. Voimme soittaa puolesta tunnista tuntiin, jotain sellaista. Istumme alas kuuntelemaan, mitä olemme soittaneet. Yleensä siellä on aika paljon paskaa, mutta löytyy sieltä muutaman minuutin kuluttua joitain erityisiä pieniä hetkiä, jotka voimme poimia ja joita voimme työstää. Jotkin biisit, jotka kuultiin viime albumilla, ovat syntyneet näistä jameista, joten se on meille melko tärkeä työskentelytapa ja samalla myös rento tapa.

Joten, kuten sanoin, meillä kaikilla on ideamme, tulemme ja istumme alas soittamaan. Joitain asioita muutetaan paremmaksi, biisien nimet sun muut voivat muuttua viikoittain tai päivittäin. Totta puhuen käytimme enemmän aikaa tämän albumin tekemiseen. ”Fallen Angelsin” ja tämän albumin eroista sen verran, että ”Fallen Angelsilla” on pieniä juttuja, joita kuunnellessamme ajattelemme, että ”olisi pitänyt soittaa tuota kohtaa pidempään tai olla tekemättä tuota kohtaa”. Istuimme alas ja varmistimme, että olisimme tyytyväisempiä tällä kertaa. Mielestäni se on todella varma seuraaja ja kuten sanoin, se on otettu todella hyvin vastaan. Olemme hyvin, hyvin tyytyväisiä siihen, mielestämme levy on mahtava.

”From the Very Depths” on Venomin 14. albumi. Vertasit sitä jo edelliseen “Fallen Angels” -albumiin, mutta miten vertaisit sitä muihin edellisiin albumeihinne? Onko tällä albumilla jotain, mikä saa sen erottumaan muista?

Danté: Mielestäni soundi ja tuotanto ovat erilaisia. Sanoisin, että soundi on massiivisempi ja voimakkaampi kuin aikaisemmilla albumeilla. Soundi on erilainen kuin edellisillä albumeilla ”Hell” ja ”Metal Black”. Siinä on erilainen viba. Mutta jos katsomme takaisin alkuaikoihin, ”Welcome to Helliin” ja ”Black Metaliin”, siinä on silti sama intohimo, voima ja into, mutta ajat ovat muuttuneet tuotannon suhteen, joten uusin levy on paljon puhtaampi. Varhaiset albumit olivat hyvin raakoja, mikä oli silloin osa viehätystä: se raaka raskaus, nopeus ja vokaalit, jollaisia ihmiset eivät olleet kuulleet aikaisemmin.

Tällä albumilla sama into ja tunne ovat edelleen tallella, mutta tuotanto on paljon puhtaampaa. Venom ei ole tunnettu täydellisestä tuotannon laadusta, mikä on osa sen viehätystä. Mielestäni ainoa puhtaimman tuotannon albumi bändin koko uran aikana on pakko olla ”Resurrection” vuodelta 2000. Se äänitettiin Saksassa ja tuotanto oli hyvin kliininen, ja toisaalta on sitten paljon raaemmat vanhemmat albumit, joista Venom on tunnettu. Päätimme pitää soundin raakana. Äänittäessämme emme käytä soundiamme parantavaa elektroniikkaa, emme käytä triggereitä rummuissa, kosketinsoittimia tai efektejä. Meillä on Marshallin vahvistimemme ja niiden edessä mikrofonit, lisäksi laitamme rumpujen ympärille vain mikrofonit ja yritämme saada aikaiseksi parhaan mahdollisen soundin, se on kuin vanhaa kunnon rock ´n´ rollia. Siitä tässä on kysymys. Mielestäni ihmiset voivat tehdä asioista liian monimutkaisia teknologialla. Tietenkin täytyy mennä teknologian kehityksen mukana ja sen sellaista, mutta tämä on todellakin paluu juurille, vanhaa kunnon heavy metallia. Sitä me teemme.

Eli sanoisit, että tämä on tavallaan jatkumoa edellisille albumeillenne?

Danté: Joo, kehitystä edellisestä albumista ja edellinen albumi oli kehitystä sitä edellisestä, joten kyllä. Olemme luovia ihmisiä, joten kehittelemme jatkuvasti uusia juttuja. Jopa nyt aloittelemme ideoita seuraavaa albumia varten, vaikka tämä albumi on vasta julkaistu.

Venomilla on kunnioitettavan pitkä ura takanaan. Mitkä voisivat mielestäsi olla tärkeimpiä syitä tälle?

Danté: Luulen yhden syyn olevan se, että olemme pysyneet uskollisina sille, mihin uskomme. Venom on metallibändi, emme tee asioista monimutkaisia teknologialla ja teemme juuri sitä, miltä se vaikuttaa, ilman mitään ylimääräistä. Monilla bändeillä on taipumus seurata trendejä ja vaihtaa tyyliään useita kertoja uransa aikana. Joskus se toimii sillä bändillä tai muusikolla, joskus taas ei. Emme tee tuollaista, emme tee kompromisseja imagomme, soundimme tai minkään muunkaan suhteen. Olemme Venom ja se siitä, ota tai jätä. Toivottavasti ihmiset diggaavat meitä. Meillä on ollut mittava ura, kolmisenkymmentä vuotta, mikä on mahtavaa. Olemme mitä olemme ja teemme omaa juttuamme, ja toivottavasti ihmiset pitävät siitä. Se on pääasia.

Venom on julkaissut albumeita melko tasaiseen tahtiin vuosien varrella. Mikä voisi mielestäsi olla syy sille, että Venom on onnistunut pysymään niin tuotteliaana?

Danté: Kuten aiemmin sanoin, olemme luovia ihmisiä, olemme aina kirjoittamassa. Kokoonnumme joka viikko. Vasta eilen kokoonnuimme treeneihin tunniksi tai pariksi. Soitimme monia vanhoja ja uuden albumin biisejä ja aloimme työstää paria Ragen keksimää uutta riffiä. Loppujen lopuksi rakastamme sitä, nautimme siitä, mitä teemme, sen takia kokoonnumme joka viikko. Monet bändit eivät tapaa viikkoihin, ja sitten kun he tietävät tulevansa työskentelemään aktiivisesti eli heittämään keikkoja joillain festareilla, he kokoontuvat viikko tai kaksi etukäteen ja treenaavat settiä, jonka aikovat vetää ja sitten menevät ja soittavat sen. Mutta me kokoonnumme yhteen kerran, kaksi viikossa. Vastatakseni kysymykseesi: luulen, että tämän takia Venom on julkaissut albumeita niin usein.

Entä mitä voimme odottaa Venomilta tulevaisuudessa? Oletteko tehneet vielä mitään suunnitelmia?

Danté: Jatkamme tätä hommaa, jatkamme ideoiden keksimistä ja teemme niin hyviä albumeita, kuin pystymme. Se on kaikki, mitä voimme tehdä. Me vain jatkamme sitä, mitä teemme, ja haluamme käydä uusissa paikoissa. Olen ollut bändissä vuodesta 2009, ja noina kuutena vuotena olemme soittaneet monissa erilaisissa paikoissa, missä Venom ei ole aiemmin ollut. On mukavaa tavata faneja eri maista, emme olleet ennen soittaneet esimerkiksi Espanjassa, Meksikossa tai Kolumbiassa. Fanien reaktio on ollut uskomaton. Jatkamme sitä ja käymme ”tukialueilla”, kuten Saksassa, Suomessa, Ruotsissa ja Norjassa, missä Venom on käynyt uudestaan ja uudestaan. Mutta haluamme myös mennä uusiin paikkoihin, missä Venom ei ole ennen soittanut ja nähdä ensimmäistä kertaa fanien reaktiot, se on uskomatonta.

Voimmeko odottaa näkevämme Venomin Suomessa lähiaikoina?

Danté: Haluaisimme tulla sinne. Toivotaan, että saamme joitain keikkoja sieltä festareilta. Se olisi mukavaa. Jos meidät kutsutaan jonnekin ja kaikki järjestyy, soitamme missä vain. Menisimme soittamaan vaikka Kuuhun, jos se olisi mahdollista. Rakastamme faniemme tapaamista, kun teemme meet & greetejä ja signaussessioita ja sen sellaista. Se on niin hieno fiilis. Muutamilla ensimmäisillä keikoillani bändin kanssa yllätyin siitä, että ikäjakauma oli niin laaja. Siellä oli porukkaa 11–12-vuotiaista lapsista kuusikymppisiin vanhoihin hevareihin, jotka ovat seuranneet bändiä hyvin pitkän aikaa. He seisoivat jonossa tavatakseen meidät, 11 12-vuotiaiden lasten vieressä, joten tälle ei ole ikärajaa, mikä on mahtavaa. Keikoilla soittaessa voi nähdä nuoria lapsia diggailevan 30 vuotta vanhoja biisejä. Se on mahtavaa, järisyttävää, loistavaa. Se saa ajattelemaan, että ”vau, tämä skene, tämä juttu, jota rakastamme, on edelleen hyvin, hyvin elinvoimainen ja terve tänä päivänä” ja se on äärimmäisen positiivista.

The legendary British band Venom, considered to be the father of Black Metal, have a lengthy and productive career with metal behind them. Their 14th full-length album ”From the Very Depths” was released on January 26th  via Spinefarm Records. Kaaoszine got hold of the bands drummer Danté, with whom we discussed the bands’ latest album and long career.

Hello! How has the year 2015 started with Venom?

 Danté: This year started great, obviously with the new album coming out and we’ve had some great feedback from it, some great reviews. Also just before it came out, we went over to America to a festival called 70,000 Tons of Metal which is a heavy metal cruise that goes from Miami to Jamaica. It’s been running now for five years and it’s growing in popularity every year and this year it’s been upgraded to an even bigger boat. So it’s still called 70,000 Tons of Metal but it’s actually 125,000 Tons of Metal, if you like, much, much bigger. And it’s gone from 42 bands to 60 bands and every band played two gigs on the boat, so there’s music happening all the time and we were checking bands out still at 5 and 6 in the morning, it was an awesome event.

There’s four actual venues on the ship, so there’s something for everybody and it was incredible. We had like a special thing going on on the boat, our first gig was our classic Venom set, if you like, with something from the past 30 odd years thrown in there. And then we played our new album in its entirety. People had never heard it before so it was quite nerve-wrecking, but it went absolutely great, we had a great time.

And all three of us, meself, Cronos and Rage, were also invited to perform in the all-star jam, which Mr. Jeff Waters from Annihilator organises every year.  Since the ship’s got bigger it was a bigger event, I actually found out last night from Cronos that we got like a thank you e-mail from Jeff to say thanks for being part of the biggest gig on the boat. There were more people at that than any gig on the boat so that was a great success. And you know, it was a real fun thing to do, Cronos played “Ace of Spades” by Motörhead and “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath and obviously every song was people getting up and changing, it was organized chaos, if you like, but it really did work. I was playing with people from Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock and Rolf from Primal Fear and Max Cavalera got up and sang “Walk” by Pantera and so on. There was a real good fun party-atmosphere and the fans loved it. It’s all over the Internet, all over Youtube, if you wanna check it out. And like I said, the album’s come out and we’ve had some very, very positive and great reviews so, so far, so good.

 Your latest full-length album “From the Very Depths” was released on January 26^th. What are your own thoughts concerning the album?

 Danté: Well, I think it’s a progression from “Fallen Angels” that we brought out in 2011. That was my first album with the band, since joining in 2009. We had a couple of years of growing together as musicians and getting to know each other, you know, playing gigs all around the world from 2009 to 2011. We recorded the album in 2011 and that was a very special time for me, cause it was me first album with Venom and it came out really well, we were really happy with it.

As soon as that was released, we were working on the new one so we’ve been writing kind of nonstop for the last couple of years. What happens is that all three members sort of bring their ideas to the table and you know, we work on what we’ve got. And when it’s time, we might just set the recordings going, we’ll just have a jam. We start it all with a riff that we’ve come up with. Even after there’s something that’s been planned, it can be spontaneous playing, everybody just jams along with it and we record it. We could be playing for half an hour, up to an hour, something like that. We’ll sit down and listen to what we’ve been playing, and there is quite a lot of crap in there, but after a few minutes you find some special little moments we can pick out and work on those. You know, some of the songs you heard on the last album are made from these jams, so that’s quite an important way we work and it’s also a relaxed way.

So like I said, we all got our ideas, we come and sit down and play and some of the things will change for the better, the titles of the songs and things can change week by week or day by day. We spent more time on this album, to be honest with you. From the difference between “Fallen Angels” and this one, there’s little things with “Fallen Angels” that we’re listening back and going “we should’ve played this bit a bit longer and not done this part”. We sat down and made sure we were more happy this time. I think it’s a really confident follow-up and as I said, it’s been really well received. We’re very, very happy with it, we think it’s amazing.

“From the Very Depths” is 14^th album of Venom. You already compared it to the last album “Fallen Angels”, but how would you compare it to the other previous ones? And is there something that makes this album stand out from the others?

 Danté: I think the sound and production are different, it’s a bigger sound, more powerful, I would say, than the previous album. It’s a different sound to the ones before that, “Hell” and “Metal Black”. It’s got a different vibe to it. But if we go way back to the early days to “Welcome to Hell” and “Black Metal”, it’s still got the same passion and power and excitement but the times have changed production-wise so it’s a lot clearer.  The very early albums were very raw and that was a part of the appeal then, the raw heaviness, the speed and the vocals that people hadn’t heard before.

With this album, the excitement and feel is still there but it’s more of a clearer production. Venom aren’t known for their perfect productions, that’s part of the appeal. I think the only album in their whole career that had the clearest production, would be “Resurrection” from 2000. It was recorded in Germany and really clinically produced, whereas you’ve got the lot more raw older albums and that’s what Venom are kind of famous for. We went to the angle of keeping it raw. When we record we don’t use electronics to enhance our sound, we don’t use triggers on the drums, keyboards or effects. We got our Marshall amps and microphones in front of them, and just put the microphones around the kit and get the best sound we can, it’s like good old-fashioned rock ‘n roll, that’s what it’s all about. I think people can overcomplicate things with technology. Of course you’ve got to move with the time with technology and all that, but definitely it’s back to basics, good old-fashioned Heavy Metal. It’s what we do.

So you would say this is like a continuation of your previous albums in a way?

 Danté: Yeah, it’s a progression from the last album and the last album was a progression from the one before, so yeah. We’re creative people so we’re always coming up with different things. Even now, we’re starting on ideas for the next album and this album’s only just come out.

 Venom has a respectably long career behind. In your opinion, what might be the most important reasons for this?

 Danté: I think probably because we’ve stayed true to what we believe in. Venom is a metal band, we don’t complicate things, as I said before, with technology and we do what’s written on the tin, if you like. A lot of bands tend to follow trends and they’ll change direction quite a few times in their career and sometimes that works for that band or individual, sometimes it doesn’t. We don’t do that, we don’t compromise our image, sound or anything. We are Venom and that’s it, like or lump it. And hopefully people dig us. We’ve had such a lengthy career, 30 odd years and it’s fantastic. We are who we are and we just go and do our thing and hopefully people like it. That’s the main thing.

 Venom has released albums at quite a steady pace during the years. What do you think might be the reason Venom have managed to stay so productive?

 Danté: Like I said before, we’re creative people, we’re always writing things. We gather every week. It was only last night we got together for rehearsing, for an hour or two. We played many old songs and the songs on the album and we started taking on a couple of new riffs that Rage had been working on. At the end of the day we love it, we enjoy what we do, that’s why we get together every week. A lot of bands don’t see each other for weeks on end and when they know they’re gonna be actively working i.e. going out and doing some festivals, they’ll get together a week or two before hand and rehearse the set they’re gonna do and off they go and play it. But we always get together once, twice a week. To answer your question, I think that’s why Venom have been releasing albums so frequently.

 And what can we expect from Venom in the future? Have you made any plans yet?

 Danté: Keep it going, keep coming up with ideas and working on the best albums we can. That’s all we can do. We’ll just keep doing what we’re doing and we want to go to new territories. I’ve been in the band now since 2009 and in those six years we’ve played in many different territories where Venom’s never played before. So that was a nice thing, meeting fans in different countries, we’d never been to places like Spain, Mexico and Colombia before, quite a lot of different countries. The reaction from the fans has been amazing. To continue that, go to the “stronghold” places, like Germany, Finland, Sweden and Norway, where Venom have been going time and time again, but to also go to new places, where Venom’s never played before and see the reaction of the fans for the first time, it’s incredible.

 Can we expect to see Venom live here in Finland anytime soon?

 Danté: We’d love to. Let’s hope we can get some gigs over there, some festivals. It would be nice. If we get an invite and it all works out, we go and play where ever, we’d go and play on the Moon, if it was right, you know. We love meeting our fans, when we’re doing our meet & greets and signing sessions and things like that. It’s such a great feeling, you know. What kind of bowled me over from my first few gigs with the band, was that the age-range was so vast. You’d get some kids of 11-12 years old up until people in their 60’s, old metalheads that have been following the band for a long, long time. They stood in the line to meet you, next to a kid who can be 11-12 years old, so there’s no age limit on it and it’s amazing. At the gigs you’d be playing away and looking down and seeing some young kids digging on songs that are 30 years old, it’s great, it’s mind-blowing, brilliant. It makes you think like “wow, this scene, this thing that we love is still very, very much alive and healthy today” and it’s extremely positive.
