Black Mirrorsin Pierre Lateur: ”Haluaisimme kokeilla modernimpaa soundia tulevalla albumilla”

Belgialainen Black Mirrors vieraili toukokuussa Suomessa yhdessä islantilaisen The Vintage Caravanin kanssa. Kaaoszine sai mahdollisuuden jutella belgialaisyhtyeen kanssa ja tiedustella yhtyeen kuulumiset. Yhtyeen jäsenet kertoivat myös mielellään ajatuksia musiikista yleisesti sekä paljastivat jo säveltäneen muutaman kappaleen tulevaa albumia varten.

Moro! Olette olleet Vintage Caravanin kanssa kiertueella, ja tänään on kiertueenne viimeinen keikka. Millaiset ovat tunnelmat?

Pierre: Kiertue on ollut todella hyvä tähän mennessä, ja oikeastaan tämä on toinen kiertue Vintage Caravanin kanssa, sillä tämä on ”Gateways”-kiertueen toinen osa, ja olimme islantilaisten mukana jo ensimmäisellä osalla. Olemme siis jo tuttuja Vintage Caravanin kanssa ja hommat ovat sujuneet hyvin. Me itse olemme kuitenkin vasta ensimmäistä kertaa Skandinaviassa, joten tämä on siinäkin mielessä hienoa.

Kuinka kiertueen keikat ovat sujuneet?

Marcella: Ensimmäisellä puoliskolla kiertuetta, joka sijoittui esimerkiksi Saksaan, yleisöä oli enemmän, sillä me olemme tunnetumpia siellä. Pohjoismaissa emme ole niin tunnettuja, ja joudumme tekemään töitä enemmän tavoittaaksemme yleisöä, joten siinä mielessä Skandinavia on ollut haastavampi. Kiertueessa on sekin hyvä puoli, että pääsemme näkemään eri maiden eri yleisöjä ja joudumme aina kuin ”taistelemaan”, jotta saamme ihmiset vakuutettua itsestämme.

Onko jokin keikka jäänyt erityisesti mieleenne?

Pierre: Münster Saksassa. Keikkapaikka ei ollut iso, mutta yleisöä oli paljon ja ilmapiiri siellä oli ihan hullua.

Loïc: Eräs kuuntelija yleisöstä kiipesi lavalle, tanssi siellä kanssamme ja lähti yhtäkkiä yleisösurffaamaan. Se oli todella hauskaa.

Julkaisitte esikoisalbumin ”Look Into The Black Mirrorin” viime elokuussa. Onko albumilta löytynyt joku kappale, joka onkin toiminut keikalla soitettuna paremmin kuin olisitte etukäteen uskoneet?

Pierre: Itse valitsisin levyn viimeisen kappaleen ”Burning Warriorsin”, joka on myös keikkasettimme viimeinen kappale. Kappale merkitsee meille jokaiselle paljon, ja sen aikana usein improvisoimme paljon, joten se poikkeaa albumilla olevasta kappaleesta.

Marcella: On aina vaikea valita yhtä suosikkikappaletta lapsistaan, mutta se voisi olla myös itselleni ”Burning Warriors”, koska se on voimakas kappale ja sillä on sanomansa. Kappalehan kertoo Amerikan suurimmasta massamurhasta, joka kohdistui maan alkuperäiskansaan. Se on meille herkkä aihe, joka koskettaa meitä. Valitsisin myös ”Inner Reality” -kappaleen, josta pidän myös kovasti. Se on tahdiltaan hitaampi mutta samalla intensiivinen kappale.

Tutustuin Black Mirrorsiin debyytti-EP:nne kautta ja muistan, että teitä on musiikillisesti verrattu Janis Jopliniin. Onko teitä verrattu vieläkin?

Marcella: Sitä kuulee vielä joskus, mutta ei kovin usein. Toki tämä vertaus saa itseni nöyräksi, sillä arvostan Joplinia kovasti. Toissa päivänä laivalla ollessani uskaltauduin jopa maistamaan yhtä hänen suosikkijuomaansa siinä toivossa, että voisin kyetä laulamaan kuin hän! Tämä oli toki vitsi. Mutta vakavasti ottaen hänellä on ollut vaikutuksensa minuun ja arvostan häntä laulajana.

Millaisista yhtyeistä Black Mirrors on saanut vaikutteita?

Pierre: EP:tä ja albumia äänittäessä vaikutteita on tullut Led Zeppelinin, Queens of Stone Agen, Jimi Hendrixin ja Nirvanan suunnilta. Grungella on ollut hyvin vahva vaikutus myös meihin, joten mainittakoon Pearl Jam ja Alice In Chains, joista me todella pidämme. Emme pidä pelkästään heidän musiikistaan vaan olemuksestaan ja tavastaan kirjoittaa sanoituksia.

Millaisia suunnitelmia yhtyeellänne on loppuvuotta varten?

Marcella: Aiomme kirjoittaa uusia kappaleita toista albumia varten. Sen lisäksi soitamme muutamilla festareilla Saksassa, Hollannissa ja Belgiassa.

Pierre: Mitä tulee uusien kappaleiden kirjoittamiseen, haluamme kirjoittaa niitä mahdollisimman pian, koska meillä on kaksi uutta jäsentä yhtyeessämme. Haluaisin kovasti päästä luomaan yhdessä jotakin uutta, sillä Paul ja Loïc eivät olleet edellisen albumin äänityksissä mukana. Olemme jo kirjoittaneet tällä kiertueella kaksi uutta kappaletta, joista toinen onkin meidän esityksessämme jo mukana.

Miten haluaisitte laajentaa Black Mirrorsin soundia?

Pierre: Meillä on paljon rock- ja bluesrock-kuuntelijoita, jotka pitävät 70-luvun vivahteistamme, mutta haluaisimme seuraavaksi luoda jotain modernimpaa. Emme kuitenkaan aio lisätä musiikkimme syntetisaattoria tai rumpukonetta. Musiikin ydin pysyy samana, mutta vaikutteet tulevat olemaan tuoreempia.

Rockin yleinen nykytilanne on puhutteleva, joten haluaisinkin tietää, millaisessa asemassa rock on kotimaassanne Belgiassa?

Marcella: Se ei ole valtavirtamusiikin asemassa – kuten yleensä muuallakaan Euroopassa – mutta silti rockille on maassamme kysyntää. Olen huomannut, että kun rockbändejä esiintyy maassamme, keikat ovat usein loppuunmyytyjä. Myös meidän keikkamme on ollut loppuunmyyty, kuten Vintage Caravanin keikka Brysselissä. Minusta se tarkoittaa, että rockille on yleisönsä.

Paul: Todellakin. Rockin asema Belgiassa on enemmänkin underground-tasolla, mutta skene kehittyy ja laajenee, ja rock tarvitsee vain aikaa noustakseen taas.

Pierre: Jos miettii rock-musiikin historiaa, niin mielestäni jo 50- tai 60-luvulla sanottiin, että rock on kuollut. Sen jälkeen niin on sanottu ennen Led Zeppeliniä, Jimi Hendrixiä, Pink Floydia, Rolling Stonesia, Metallicaa jne. Historia kulkee kehää, ja joku päivä rock tulee takaisin loistoonsa. Mielestäni elämme tietyllä tapaa 80-lukua, jota hallitsivat pop-musiikki syntetisaattoreineen ja rumpukoneineen, mutta silloin grunge muhi pinnan alla ja muutti tilanteen. Minusta pop-musiikki on menettänyt teräänsä, se ei enää välitä tunteita samalla lailla, joten ehkä sen on aika siirtyä muun tieltä.

Black Mirrors from Belgium played for the first time in Helsinki on the 6th of May. The band was supporting Vintage Caravan on their ”Gateways” tour. Kaaoszine had the opportunity and the pleasure to talk with Black Mirrors before their show. In the interview, the band gave their opinions about music and rock and also mentioned they have made a few new songs for their next album.

Hi! You have spent few weeks on the road with Vintage Caravan and this is your last show of tour. How are your feelings right now?

Pierre: The tour has been really good so far, and actually this is the second tour with Vintage Caravan, ’cause this is the second part of the ”Gateways” tour. And we were with the Icelanders in the first part too. So we are already familiar with Vintage Caravan and things have went well. This is the first time in Scandinavia for us, so from that aspect this is great for us.

How have the shows gone so far?

Marcella: In the first half of the tour which was based in Germany pretty much, there were more people in the shows because we are better known there. In the Nordic countries, we are not so well-known and we have to work harder to convince the audience, so in this sense Scandinavia has been more challenging. On the other hand tour has gave us a good chance to see different audiences in different countries, and we have had always to ”fight” to convince the people.

Has some show from tour leave special memory to you?

Pierre: Münster in Germany. Venue wasn’t large but it was almost sold out and crowd was crazy.

Loïc: Some dude from audience climbed on stage and danced with us and then he crowd surfed so it was pretty fun!

You released your debut album ”Look Into The Black Mirror” last August. Have you found out any song from album which has been more fun to play than you expected?

Pierre: I would choose the last song on the album ”Burning Warriors” which is also the last song in our show. The song means a lot to each of us, and when we play it we improvise a lot, so it differs from the song on the album.

Marcella: It is always hard to choose one favorite song from your children, but I could also say ”Burning Warriors” because it is a powerful song and it has it’s message. The song tells us about America’s largest massacre that targeted the native people of the country. It is a sensitive subject that touches us. I would also choose the ”Inner Reality” song that I like too much. It is slower but at the same time intense.

I got to know Black Mirrors by your debut EP and I remember that some critics claimed you to have influences from Janis Joplin. Do some people still compare you to Janis Joplin?

Marcella: We do hear it sometimes but not very often. Of course, this parable makes me humble because I appreciate Joplin very much. The other day we were on the boat, I even dared to taste one of her favorite drinks in the hope that I could sing like her! That was a joke, of course! But seriously, she has had an influence on me and I appreciate her as a singer.

Which bands has effected to Black Mirrors most?

Pierre: On our EP and debut album we have had influences from bands like Led Zeppelin, Queens of Stone Age, Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana. Grunge has also effected us deeply bands like Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains, which we really like. We do not only like their music but also their essence and the way to write lyrics.

What kind of plans do you have for rest of the year?

Marcella: We’re going to write new song for next album. Besides that we’re going to play in festivals in Germany, Netherlands and Belgia.

Pierre: What it comes to writing new songs, we want to write them as soon as possible ’cause we have two new members in our band. I would love to create something new music together, because Paul and Loïc were not included in the previous album recordings. We’ve already written two new songs on this tour and one of them is already included in set list.

How would you like to expand Black Mirrors’s sound?

Pierre: We have a lot of rock and bluesrock listeners who like our 70s nuances, but we would like to create more modern sound. But don’t worry, we’re not going to add synthesizer or drum machine in our music. The essence of music stays the same but the influences will be fresher.

Some people like to claim that rock is dead. How is rock music doing in Belgium?

Marcella: It is not in the position of mainstream music – as not in other parts of Europe – but still there is demand for rock in our country. I have noticed that when rock bands are playing in our country gigs are often sold out. Our gig has been sold out like  Vintage Caravan’s in Brussels. I think it means rock has its audience.

Paul: Absolutely. Rock music’s state in Belgium is more like underground but scene is getting bigger and develops and I think scene needs more time to grow to become mainstream.

Pierre: If you think about the history of rock music, I think it was said in the 50s or 60s first time that ”rock is dead”. Since then, it has been said before Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Metallica, etc. History goes through the circle and some day rock comes back to mainstream. I think we are living in a certain way in the 80s, dominated by pop synthesizers and drum machines, but then grunge grew up and changed the situation. I think pop music has lost its blade, it doesn’t touch people in the way it used to so maybe another music style while take it’s place.
