Melodisen death metalin uusi tuleminen: haastattelussa saksalainen Parasite Inc.

Kirjoittanut Arto Mäenpää - 20.9.2018

Saksalainen melodista death metalia soittava Parasite Inc. edustaa kyseisen genren ns. uudempaa sukupolvea. Yhtye julkaisi järjestyksessään toisen albuminsa nimeltä ”Dead And Alive” hiljattain Reaper Entertainmentin kautta ja albumi nousi komeasti myös yhtyeen kotimaassa viralliselle albumilistalle. Tavoitimme puhemilitse yhtyeen laulajana toimivan Kai Biglerin, joka paljasti olleensa häkeltynyt upeasta sijoituksesta listalla sekä toivovansa näkevänsä yhtyeen keikalla myös Suomessa tulevaisuudessa. Voit lukea haastattelun tästä:

Terve Kai. Kuinkas kesä 2018 sujui Parasite Inc.:llä?

Kai: Kesä meni kaiken kaikkiaan aika rauhassa albumin julkaisua valmistellen.

Kai: Totta, kiitos paljon!

Olitteko yllättyneitä nähtyänne nimen tuolla listalla?

Kai: Totta kai olimme.

Bändinne on luokiteltu melodiseksi death metal bändiksi. Mistä olette ottaneet vaikutteita? Tulevatko musiikilliset vaikutteet esim.

Kai: Kasvoin Skandinaavisten bändien, kuten In Flamesin ja Children of Bodomin parissa.

Puhuttaessa melodisesta death metalista.

Kai: (Naurua) En todellakaan.

Oliko sinulla suuria idoleita, joista ottaa vaikutteita?

Kai: Kun perustimme Parasite Inc.in, en koskaan halunnut laulaa, koska en halunnut olla yhtyeen keulamies.

Oliko sinulla muita vaikuttajia?

Kai: Henkilökohtaisesti Arch Enemy on minulle vähän eri juttu nykyään.

Palatakseni melodisen death metallin genreen. Miten itse näet koko genren nykyisen tilan?

Miten itse kulutat musiikkia?

Kai: Joo me olemme hyvä esimerkki siitä selkeästi! (Naurua).

Mitä suunnitelmia teillä on? Aiotteko tulla Skandinaviaan soittamaan?

English version:

German melodic death metallers Parasite Inc. released a new album entitled ”Dead And Alive” on August 17th through Reaper Entertainment. Kaaoszine had the chance to talk with the band´s vocalist Kai Bigler about the latest album as well as what does the future hold for the band. You can read our entire chat with Kai here:

Hello Kai. How was the summer of 2018 for you and the band?

Kai: From there it was all about promotion and preparing for the release and I think we didn’t have a lot off the summer this year. We were just working and working and two weeks ago we had a release show for “Dead and Alive” and I think that was kind of the best part of the summer, to finally be back on stage.

So how did the show go?

Kai: Pretty good I think. You know we were the first band on that day, we were playing on the main stage on the Summer Breeze festival. That was kind a huge step up for us, I mean we’ve never been playing before on such a big stage. That was pretty exciting and there were more people than we expected around that time, you know festival people don’t get up early… (Laughing) but for us there were many people and we were really happy.

You actually had your album reach the German charts aswell, congratulations from that.

Kai: Oh yeah well thank you!

Were you actually surprised when you saw your name on the list?

Kai: Yes of course. We had seen all the pre-sales and the pre-orders and we had kind of feeling that it could work out but we didn’t expect to reach the top 50 at all. And then we finally ended up on the 33rd place. We were kind of wow, we totally didn’t expect that ranking.

Speaking about the album, “Dead and Alive”. When you started writing the album, did you have a certain kind of vision where you wanted to take the band, compared to the first album?

Kai: We didn’t have a kind of vision or special approach, I would say. It were five years so we just did what we wanted to do. We had some ideas we wanted to realize, in terms of changing our sound a bit. But in general we just started writing the songs, and from there we just kept going and “Dead and Alive” was kind of the outcome. Maybe we had an approach to make it better than “Time Tears Down” in some way.

So the band has been labelled as melodic death metal. Where have you actually drawn your influences from? Do your musical influences have come from like Swedish Gothenburg scene or have you followed bands like Heaven shall burn or Caliban from your own scene?

Kai: I grew up with Scandinavian bands like In Flames and Children Of Bodom. That was the stuff I was listening to when I was young. I think you obviously can hear those influences in our music. And of course we have other influences as well but we didn’t especially follow those bands you named. I think we have our main influences coming from the big melodic death metal bands I guess but we have a lot more influences from different music styles and different bands all across the metal world at least from my point of view.

Speaking about melodic death metal. If you, for example, compare black metal to melodic death metal. Black metal is wider genre than basic melodic death metal, is it hard to bring anything new to the table when it comes to that specific type of music?

Kai: I think I don’t force myself, I mean when I write I want to try something new. But I think we do what we want to listen to and we want to write music that we like and if it already has been there its nothing bad for us. We just want to make it good and fun for us to play and to listen to.

Do you think bands really need to invent something new or so to say, invent the wheel again to be internationally well recognized? Or do you feel that by doing well your own thing you might reach that as well?

Kai: If bands have ideas why not bring them in to the music. Its kind a part of being a musician or being creative with the music but there are also parts that work just fine without reinventing the wheel.

I guess that’s really like the toughest part when you have a good working formula. You don’t have to do it all over again but you still have to do it somehow fresh for the fans.

Kai: Yeah, not especially for the others but also for yourself. I mean you don’t want to do the same thing over again. We could have made another “Time Tears Down” but we had kind of different idea what we wanted to try. Not to invent the wheel, but try new things.

Speaking about the band itself. Where did you originally come up with the idea to form a metal band? And especially melodic death metal band.

Kai: That was long time ago. I actually never planned on playing an instrument or playing music at all. That was kind of more an accident. When I was young I had some friends play in a band and one of the guys didn’t show up in rehearsals and they asked me if I wanted to shout on a microphone. Obviously I did not do the best job but they asked me again to help them out and one day they asked me to play guitar. I said like “no man, I don’t have any idea about that”. The other guitarist showed me basic power chords and I thought “Okay let’s try” and that was kind of my introduction to music world.

From there I somehow catched fire and wanted to get better. I learned a lot about metal music, it fascinated me how fast people can play and how complex things can get. I felt also it was kind of good for my soul. I think it is with many musicians that they can cure their mind by playing music. One day I wanted to play more music and have band and all that kind of stuff. Later I met metal drummer, Benjamin, and we started to form a band.

Do you still remember the time when you participated in the first rehearsals? Did you actually lose your voice when you were shouting to the microphone or did you immediately figure out a technic to do it?

Kai: (Laughing) Not at all. I think that first two years I constantly blew my voice off. I was thinking that I just have to shout as loud as possible and as angry as possible. And in thirty minutes my voice was gone and the rehearsal was over. (Laughing). I think if I would have drunk much less my voice would have lasted longer but at the time it was all about screaming and drinking.

So how much have you actually practiced your voice that you don’t lose it when you are playing a show?

Kai: Well if possible. I try to warm up my voice thirty minutes before the show. I drink enough, no alcohol at all. Because it always fucks up my voice. It is not always possible, but mostly it works well and I don’t blew my voice anymore these days.

When you first started singing, which vocalist did you admire the most? Did you have any big idols you looked up to?

Kai: When we formed Parasite Inc. I actually never wanted to sing because I didn’t want to be the front man of the band. I was always afraid to talk to people and be at the center of the stage. I always wanted to write songs and play guitar which was my main goal at the time. But we are coming from a small town and there were not a lot of people interested in playing with us and especially in singing. We tried a few guys but it never worked out and somehow I ended up being a vocalist in the band.

But having idols, this might sound weird but Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy was a huge influence to me.

Why? She’s a good singer and a good growler though so why not.

Kai: Yes. I saw some tutorial at the time and felt like she was kind of always big discipline with what she was doing and great inspiration for me for sure.

Okay, did you have any other ones you looked up to?

Kai: Not really, I think she really was kind of main influence to me. I catch a lot of influences from many metal bands and singers. But she was really the big influence to me in the early days.

What do you think about Arch Enemy now days, with Alissa singing?

Kai: Personally… It’s different for me with Arch Enemy these days. I personally liked Angela’s voice more. To me it was more powerful and more aggressive and I’m not so much into Alissa’s voice. She’s great of course but not my type.

Speaking still about melodic death metal genre. How do you see the current state of the genre? Do you feel there are a lot of new bands coming which are promising? The whole metal scene is kind of in a state that there are not much new bands that are coming big and the old ones are about to end their careers so we are living quite exciting times.

Kai: Yeah, that’s a pretty interesting point. We’ve had a lot of discussion with friends and I there are many big bands that are getting old and finally retiring and not big follow ups coming. And in terms of melodic death metal, a lot of bands are getting defined as melodic death metal these days. There are quite a few great ones, young ones. I would say bands like Bloodshot Dawn for example are great, I’m not sure if these guys are melodic death metal, I like them a lot but I’m not sure if they are getting as big as…

Bands like Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility, Soilwork? I guess it’s pretty hard.

Kai: Yeah. It’s not easy. I think if you want to make a living or money metal is maybe not the right place.

Do you actually feel it has become harder and harder all the time to make a living playing in a metal band?

Kai: Well yes. I think with the old industry it was a bit easier. With the CD sales going down and lots of downloads from the internet it’s harder, I would say.

How do you consume music? Do you listen to Spotify and YouTube or do you collect CD:s and Vinyl?

Kai: I’m listening to Spotify yes and it depends on the band but I still collect CD:s and it has become something special. When I buy CD:s I really want to support the band and there is something special to me when I do it but yes I still do it. Most of the time I listen to music on Spotify and when I want to find new music I spend hours on searching on YouTube.

Well YouTube is a pretty good place to find new music and a good platform for new bands to be discovered. For example I wouldn’t have heard from your band ever if I wouldn’t have scrolled through YouTube. So it’s a good example of that.

Kai: Yeah we are pretty good example of that obviously. (Laughing). A lot of people have found us on YouTube and that’s pretty good for young bands. I constantly find young bands and new interesting music especially when it comes to reviews and magazines. When I was young I was often reading magazines and when you read the review you bought the CD. Then your taste didn’t match with the guy who wrote the review, and that happened to me a lot. So these days it’s great you can listen to it yourself and make your own thoughts about that.

Do you feel that there are still a place for magazines? Or do you feel that they are a part of history?

Kai: No, I don’t want to say they should become history. I think it’s just another source where you can find new music. I think magazines still have their place. The printed magazines and the online magazines, they all should be there. I would say platforms like YouTube make it easier for the people to discover music with their ears. So they can read, and they can listen. That’s a great addition and maybe there is a symbiosis between magazines and those platforms.

So in the end, a bit about future plans. What kind of actual plans do you have? Do you plan coming to Scandinavia? Scandinavia is a pretty good place when it comes to this kind of music you play.

Kai: Yes, that would be great for sure. I hope we can make this become real one day. Maybe we get some attention from promoters and they invite us come over. At the moment we are planning on having a small tour with a band called Nothgard. I don’t know if you know them, their guitarist is playing in a band called Equilibrium. It’s his second band, when the main band is Equilibrium. That will happen in October and I think when we have done that we are planning on shows for next year.

We don’t have a special plan or master plan for now. We just have released “Dead And Alive” and we have to work with that. We are just open for everything that comes in the future. We will see what will happen.

Okay, well thank you a lot for your time and best hopes for the future. Is there anything you want to say as the last words to the Finnish fans and Kaaoszine readers who read this afterwards?

Kai: Thank you for reading this! Thank you for having interview with me. I wish all the best to Finland and I hope to see you guys one day in nice club in Finland.
