Nightrage

Kirjoittanut Samuli Jalonen - 23.4.2015

Nightrage 2015Ruotsalaisia ja kreikkalaisia metallimuusikoita sisällään pitävä Nightrage julkaisee uuden albuminsa ”The Puritan” Despoz Recordsin kautta perjantaina 24.4.2015. Kyseinen levy on ensimmäinen, jolla laulaa uusi laulaja Ronnie Nyman.

Nightrage julkaisee 24.4.2015 uuden albuminsa, ”The Puritanin”. Voisitko aluksi kertoa hieman levyn luomisprosessista, milloin ryhdyitte työstämään levyä ja missä se nauhoitettiin?

Marios Iliopoulos: Tällä kertaa varasimme prosessiin runsaasti aikaa. Yhteiskemiamme todellakin toimii!

”The Puritan” on ensimmäinen albumi, jossa Ronnie Nyman on laulajana. Oliko studiotyöskentely erilaista uuden laulajan kanssa, ja paljonko Ronnien liittyminen vaikutti siihen miltä albumi kuulostaa?

nightrage the puritanMarios Iliopoulos: Uskoisin niin.

Olen samaa mieltä kanssasi, varmastikin hyvä henkilökemia on hyväksi bändille.

Marios Iliopoulos: Se menee aina niin, sataprosenttisesti. Kaikessa on kyse henkilökemiasta. Jotta bändi toimii, on henkilökemioiden toimittava.

Uuden albumin on tuottanut Daniel Bergstrand.

He ovat todella hämmästyttävä pari, he eivät edes katso kelloa! He työskentelevät lukemattomia tunteja päästäkseen parhaaseen mahdolliseen lopputulokseen.

Marios Iliopoulos: Se on meidän palkkiomme, olet ihan oikeassa.

Marios Iliopoulos: Aloitetaan vaikkapa ”The Puritanista”, eli nimikkokappaleesta.

Kappaleita on helppo soittaa livenäkin. Siinä on suurin ero.

Kuka on tehnyt kansikuvan levylle?

Marios Iliopoulos: Eräs ystävämme, joka soittaa eräässä metalcorebändissä. Puhuimme Japanissa asiasta.

”The Puritan” on ensimmäinen levy, joka julkaistiin Despoz Recordsin kautta. Miten päädyitte Despozille, vaikka olette olleet Lifeforcen mukana jo useamman levyn verran?

Sitten saimme tarjouksen Despoz Recordsilta. He ovat aika uusi firma, mutta heillä oli hienoja ideoita ja he ovat mahtavia tyyppejä! He ovat pitäneet kaikki antamansa lupaukset tähän mennessä.

Ensimmäinen levyltä lohkaistu sinkku oli ”Kiss of a Sycophant” musiikkivideon muodossa, miten juuri tämä biisi valikoitui ensimmäiseksi?

Suomi on hieno maa pienille bändeille.

Viime aikoina on ollut paljon puhetta maksetuista fanitapaamisista. Mikä on oma mielipiteesi siihen aiheeseen? Onko oikein ottaa rahaa faneilta bändien tapaamisesta?

Me emme halua tehdä niin.

Terveiset kaikille faneillemme!

Nightrage 2015Hello! How are things currently going for Nightrage?

Marios Iliopoulos: Hey there! I’m very happy to talk about new album, we are super exited I can tell you that. We are back after 3 ½ years after our last album, ”Insidious”. We came back with same kind of mentality, we did not change too much and we also tried to hone our sound. We have new singer, the chemistry of the band really works really well. We try to book shows for the new album, overall…we feel very happy about outcome and also about first reactions, generally feedback has been very positive so far. For me personally, when you release album, I don’t take granted that people will like album, there are always people out there that might not like it so it’s good surprise for me and us that people still try to understand message that we try to portray with our new album, that’s what makes us really happy, as songwriters and as a band.

Nightrage is about to release new album, ”The Puritan” 24.4.2015. First of all, could you tell bit about creation process of the album, when did you start working on it and such things and where album was recorded

Marios Iliopoulos: Well, this time we took our time, me too as well. I took some time. I didn’t want to make album just for sake of making the album. After the ”Insidious” album I also felt in personal level that I needed some time, moved back to Sweden and such. I wanted to feel inspired and make sure that I had right songs in my hands. This was the first time actually for us that we took some time and we worked a lot. I started to work on new songs maybe 2 years ago, we developed some demo ideas and then we started t0 write lyrics together and make musical arrangements as well, pretty much collective effort like it has always been for Nightrage. I’m really happy to find like guy like Ronnie, he is same type of guy and he understands where Nightrage comes from, we have really great chemistry working together.

”The Puritan” is first album that features Ronnie Nyman as singer. Was working on studio different then before now that you had new singer onboard and how much does he effect upon how the album sounds?

nightrage the puritanMarios Iliopoulos: Definitely, I think so. this time we had little bit more personal contact, he came to my apartment, we sat down, thought about things, think about themes and stuff, exchange ideas…all that makes difference for me actually. I think it’s always better to have a guy who you can talk about your ideas instead of just sending emails like I used to do and Ronnie is really nice guy, he has same kind of values, we have same spirit and that helped a lot. We understand each other, that really helps to achieve, to write lots of good stuff together.

I can agree with you, surely good chemistry inside band helps to achieve things.

Marios Iliopoulos: It’s always like that, 100%. It’s all about character for me. Ronnie is a good guy, he is down to earth, he has good communication. It’s not about having best singer or best guitarist in the world, it’s all about character. You need good characters for band to work.

New album was produced by Daniel Bergstrand, why was he chosen as producer and how was it like working with him?

Marios Iliopoulos: That was Ronnie’s idea, he is friend of Daniel and he told that it would be good idea to get away from our usual places and record somewhere else. He knew Daniel and knew how good he was. It was meant to be like that, working with Daniel…he gave us this really big sound. Another great guy working with him, George helped us working with guitars and mastering the album. They have really amazing duo there. I mean, they don’t even watch the time, they work countless hours to achieve for best result. For first time band felt that we found guy who cared about songs, they liked the songs. They cared to make best production. It really felt positive, that’s why it turned out to be like that, ”The Puritan” is great example of that cooperation.

If you see his past recording, Meshuggah, Dimmu Borgir, Soilwork all those great bands, this guy never stops working! He can work like 10-15 hours without stopping, I have never seen anyone like that, very dedicated and you can see that on ”The Puritan”.

Your former guitar player, Olof also left the band few years back, has there been plans for getting another guitar player to the band? And what about the drums, are you planning to take Johan Nunez as permanent member to the band?

Marios Iliopoulos: Yeah, Olof is a great guitar player, we worked well together with previous albums. We wrote lot’s of songs together and our chemistry was great but he was interested in playing another type of music. He lost his interest in playing melodic death metal, music that we that play. Maybe it’s not that popular, maybe it does not create so much money and fame…I don’t know what’s the reason but we are still here, we are still here to play what we love. As for guitar player, we have guy right now, friend of Ronnie’s, very good player. He will help us play live sessions for the shows for now. Until we make sure we…well, we will see what happens, we don’t want to rush things.

We are on same situation with drums too, we are going to have session guy. Johan played on album but he is very busy with playing with other bands such as solo band of Marty Friedman so he does not have enough time for Nightrage. We love the guy, he helped us a lot playing drums for ”The Puritan”, since we did not have drummer and we would like to thank him for that. I think for us it’s better to find guy who can put more time in band, a guy like us. Dude that is willing to sacrifice his time, loves to play music, it’s not too easy I guess. I don’t want to be too demanding but maybe it’s demanding to play such music now days.

It’s surely hard to find persons that are willing to sacrifice time and money since i could think you aren’t making shitloads of money by playing in band.

Marios Iliopoulos: That’s exactly where the problem is, if you think about why Nightrage has so many member changes, that’s the reason. you can tell on one hand that we’re very focused on what we do and on other hand we don’t want to look right and left that we don’t want to make stuff that would probably make us more successful. It’s not like we don’t like success but we want it with our own terms, we don’t want to sell our soul to the devil, so to speak. But I understand people on other hand, they become desperate, they want to make money. My advice is, go to work, sell sausages if you want to make money. Music is art, you should not sell that, you should make it for yourself. Maybe people feel that I’m crazy and I live in my own bubble but I believe in that. Music is all about passion, musical integrity not about making radio hits. Playing music from your own heart, whatever will happen will happen but we don’t worry so much about this sort of crap. We just want to make music and feel good about this, connecting to fans, it’s all about that, not about radio hits.

I believe that fans can tell difference between bands that make music to get rich and bands that make music from heart.

Marios Iliopoulos: That’s the reward for us, you are absolutely right, fans can see that. They know and when they see us do that, they support us and that means world to us.

What could you tell about lyrics of the album?

Marios Iliopoulos: Let’s start with ”The Puritan”, that is the title. It shows our passion about music, that we never give up. We firmly believe that there is light at end of the tunnel, never to betray yourself and your fans. We are also trying to reach essence of the human soul, we go even further this time lyrics are deep and personal, about rotten core of human race. It’s like a journey to man’s life who tries to discover truth about himself. We speak about these matters because we want to keep it real, maybe lots of people can relate to these subjects. Very real and down to earth lyrics and I think it connects nicely to music. I cannot imagine Nightrage making, for example ”fantasy lyrics”.

Lyrics are very important to us, we take them seriously. We want to create great bond between music and lyrics. You get the feeling from song and then your read the lyrics when you listen, you get another perspective, you can fantasize about themes and find connections from lyrics.

If you compare the new album to your previous one ”Insidious”, what sort of differences you see music wise?

Marios Iliopoulos: The differences are mainly in sounds, drums and guitars…performance from both guitars and vocals, especially vocals. We spent lots of time to recording good vocals, Ronnie and Daniel worked together for long time to achieve best possible outcome. Also I think it’s the songs, they are more mature, more simplistic, we did not really care about complex arrangements, we cared about feeling the technical stuff. That’s the main difference, we tried to write good songs, they are songs that you can easily play on live situation. That is the main difference.

Sometimes bands make too much complication and make too complex albums, they forget that sometimes less is more

Marios Iliopoulos: Exactly! I mean imagine yourself on live situation, you want to be able to perform you want to be able to perform without even thinking about it, to make show. You are there for reason, you are there to entertain…not to play best as you can, not to show your skills. You are there to connect with fans and give them your best. Having easy type of songs it best way to do that.

Who has done cover of the album?

Marios Iliopoulos: Friend of ours, dude that plays in metal core band. We spoke in Japan, very nice guy. He is very talented artist, we checked his work and we told him some things about our lyrics, and he designed that cover. It represents lyrics and music nicely.

The Puritan is first album that will be released trough Despoz Records, how did you end up signing with Despoz since you have been with Lifeforce for quite long time?

Marios Iliopoulos: Yeah, I mean Lifeforce deal ended after 3 albums and they were not interested in working with Nightrage anymore so we tried to find new label. Some were interested but some of them were not very serious until we were contacted by Despoz records. They are kind of new label but they have great ideas, and they are very great persons. They have delivered everything that they promised so far, imagine band like us releasing 2 lyric videos and 2 music videos before releasing the album. They have really good group, they are great guys, we are grateful about finding label that really cares about our music.

There has been one single released from the album in form of music video, ”Kiss of A Sycophant”, how was this song chosen to be first to be released?

Marios Iliopoulos: It’s kind of funny if you look track list, it’s last song of the album since we don’t want to do things like other bands do. It’s one reason and second is that song is full of energy, we did not want to use mid tempo song as first sample. We wanted to show real Nightrage, this song is very flashy and has all the elements that we love, heavy riffs and emotional melodies…pounding drums. All kinds of nice stuff. It’s hard to review your own the music! It’s better to let other people judge it, that’s best thing that you can do.

You currently don’t have any upcoming gigs at your website, are you planning to start touring with the new album and are there chances that we could see Nightrage in Finland?

Marios Iliopoulos: Yeah, we have lots of plans, we want to do Asian tour and then probably go to Australia and we are talking about South American tour and we have been speaking about European tour with our new booking agency. So we discuss a lot but they have not been confirmed and that’s why you don’t see them on website. We want to confirm them first. We hope to play in Finland as well, we played there in 2005 or 2006 and we played like 4 shows and we really want to come back. Finland is metal country, you have metal bands hitting charts, that’s amazing. It’s very impressive, such a small country, special mentality and you are very open minded people. You have no problem with other genres of music such as metal, that’s what I love about Finland, Sweden and Norway and such. Lots of goods bands in Finland, it would be great to make tour with one of them. I like this band called Omnium Gatherum, I like them a lot. You guys there have lotss of great bands over there, those kinds of band get lots of local support. It’s great to see that your people gives support to smaller bands. Finland is great place for small bands.

There has been much discussion lately about paid meet & greets, what is your opinion on that matter, is it ok for bands to take money for meeting their fans?

Marios Iliopoulos: I don’t know, it seems little bit off. I’m sure I have heard about this thing but it does not feel right for me. Fans are there to support you, they pay for you to see the show. Last thing you want to do is charge them for see you or contacting you, it’s not right. I don’t want to do that. Without fans we would be nothing, just people sitting and daydreaming. I always want to see fans after the gig, we go to merch stand, we chat with fans. We like to do that and we don’t want to charge you for that, it feels very wrong.

Problem with the money is that now that making music does not profit you, they invent new ways to make money but charging fans after they already pay money for show, why would you ask them to pay even more? I prefer not to make money like that.

Thank you for the interview and best of luck for your future efforts, if you want to say some sort of words of closure to your fans, speak freely!

Marios Iliopoulos: Yeah, thank you for this great interview, It’s been one of the best so far and I’m not just saying that, you asked great questions. I like to talk about more than just album, lyrics, life and stuff. Thanks for that! Cannot wait to get out there, to see our Finnish fans and hopefully you like the new album give us chance and listen to it, cheers for all of you out there!
