Wintersun – Time 1 kappale kappaleelta

Kirjoittanut Arto Mäenpää - 21.8.2012

Kuuden vuoden odotus on vihdoin päättymässä, kun kotimaisen folkahtavan melodisen death metallin kärkinimi Wintersun julkaisee viimeinkin uuden ”Time 1” nimeä kantavan albuminsa lokakuun 12. päivä Nuclear Blast Recordsin kautta. Kaaoszine sai eräänä synkkänä keskiviikon iltana mahdollisuuden kuunnella ”Time 1” -albumin kokonaisuudessaan ja sen jälkeen haastatella yhtyeen rumpalia Kai Hahtoa albumiin liittyen. Lue lisää nähdäksesi Kaaoszinen päätoimittajan Arto Mäenpään lyhyt kappale kappaleelta-arvostelu albumista.

1. ”When Time Fades Away” (4.08):
Albumin intro; eeppinen ja jopa rauhallinen aloitus albumille, joka sisältää paljon japanilaisia vaikutteita. Kasvaa loppua kohden hetki hetkeltä ja yhdistyy albumin virallisesti aloittavan pitkän eeppisen ”Sons Of Winter And Stars” -albumin introon.

2.  ”Sons Of Winter And Stars” (13.31):
I. “Rain Of Stars”:
Kappale alkaa lyhyellä introlla, joka liittyy edellisen kappaleen loppuun. Tämän jälkeen kappaleen ensimmäinen osio ”Rain Of Stars” paukahtaa käyntiin Kai Hahdon räjähtävällä blast beatilla ja yhtyeen vokalisti Jari Mäenpään hyisevällä huudolla.

II ”Surrounded By Darkness”:
Kappaleen toisessa osiossa on luvassa hieman progressiivisempaa materiaalia.

III ”Journey Inside A Dream”:
Kolmas osio puolestaan esittelee kuuntelijalle hieman erilaisen version Wintersunista ollessaan akustinen, mutta silti todella mahtipontinen. Valmistaa kuuntelijaa tulevalle neljännelle osiolle, jossa helvetti päästetään jälleen irti.

IV ”Sons Of Winter And Stars”:
Kappaleen neljäs osio tarjoaa kuuntelijalle Wintersunia omassa elementissään; Jari Mäenpään kylmiä väreitä nostattavaa huutoa yhdistettynä puhtaisiin lauluihin sekä kerrassaan upeita ja tarttuvia kuoro – osuuksia, jotka on ripoteltu kappaleen sekaan todella harkiten ja näyttävästi. Kappaleen lopettaa pieni räjähdys.

3. “Land Of Snow And Sorrow” (8.22):
Kappale alkaa rauhallisella kitaralla, johon liittyy pikkuhiljaa mukaan muita instrumentteja. Kappaleen tempo on hieman hitaampi kuin muissa kappaleissa ja kappale sisältää suurimmaksi osaksi vain puhdasta laulua Jarilta sekä kuorolaulantaa. Tunnelmaltaan se on hieman maalaileva sekä eeppinen.

4. “Darkness And Frost” (2.22):
Kalevala – tyyppinen intro tulevalle ”Time” – kappaleelle. Voisi mielestäni olla ehkä jopa Amorphiksen joltain albumilta.

5. “Time” (11.45):
”Time 1” huipentuu biisin lopussa olevaan tarttuvaan piano-outroon.

”Time 1” on kuin musiikkimaailman Lord Of The Rings; se ei taatusti jätä edes skeptisimpää kuuntelijaa kylmäksi.

Wintersun – Time 1 track by track in english:

The six years of waiting is finally over. After having many setbacks while recording and mixing the album, Wintersun is finally back with “Time 1”, an album that is set to be released on October 12th through Nuclear Blast Records here in Finland. The album is the first part from the two album saga telling story about time, and how it reflects us in different ways. Kaaoszine was one of the first media in Finland to hear the full album and we also conducted a video interview with the band´s drummer Kai Hahto, since our listening session was held in his own rehearsal space. The interview will be posted later on, but here´s a short track by track review of the album in English:

1. ”When Time Fades Away” (4.08):
The intro of the album; a really epic and surprisingly calm beginning to the album, containing a lot of vibes with Japanese influences. It begins with a really calm and relaxing atmosphere, but it reaches somewhat heroic feeling in the end of it. Combined nicely to the beginning of ”Sons Of Winter And Stars” in way, that it is hard to even recognize when the intro ends and the first actual song begins.

2. ”Sons Of Winter And Stars” (13.31):

I. “Rain Of Stars”:
The song starts with a short intro that is sort of an end to ”When Time Fades Away”. All of a sudden, hell breaks loose with fast guitar riffing from Jari Mäenpää and furious blast beating from Kai Hahto. Jari Mäenpää opens his mouth and the spine-shivering screams are back again! Overall the first part of the song contains the kind of material we used to hear on their first self-titled album. Already at this point you can easily recognize, that the production is way over the top and the song just blasts directly into your face from the speakers.

II ”Surrounded By Darkness”:
The second part of the song is more progressive and offering a different perspective into the band. It is quite heavy, but still somewhat different what we have heard from the band so far.

III ”Journey Inside A Dream”:
The third part of the song is acoustic, giving the listener a little time to take a breath. Even though the song´s tempo is slow, the part itself is still heroic and powerful. It prepares the listener to the last part of the song where hell breaks loose again.

IV ”Sons Of Winter And Stars”:
The fourth part is the last but definitely not the least. The part serves Wintersun in a way I want it to be served; Jari Mäenpää´s absolutely breath taking singing and screaming backed up with nice and very well placed choirs. The song is really epic and a nice ending to the long song.

3. “Land Of Snow And Sorrow” (8.22):
Land Of Snow And Sorrow” kicks off with a nice peaceful guitar riff and Jari´s clean singing. Overall the tempo in the track is quite slow, compared to other material on the album, and it contains mainly just clean singing and choir´s sung by Jari Mäenpää – a really nice, more peaceful addition to the CD.

4. “Darkness And Frost” (2.22):
Short Kalevala –influenced intro to the track “Time”.

5. “Time” (11.45):
An epic and nice ending to the album, offering a wide diversity of different styles of metal. The song balances nicely between the ups and downs of man´s life, offering more peaceful parts while going uphill and heavier material when going downhill. The clean singing and screaming is nicely balanced within the song representing backing up the emotions the song gives to the listener. The song ends into a nice piano outro giving the album the kind of ending it definitely deserves. After the piano intro, there´s also a small bridge built afterwards that kind of tightens up the “Time 1” and “Time 2” into each other (what Kai said to me).

Summary
: The best way to describe “Time 1” as an album is as a musical version of Lord Of The Rings. It is a combination of many different kinds of genres and I am pretty sure most of the people hearing the album will immediately fall in love with it. “Time 1” is a living proof that even though it takes six years to create an album, it is definitely worth every second of it. If the release of the second part will take six years, I am sure I will still be waiting for it as anxiously as I have waited for this one. A pure masterpiece and the best Finnish metal album to come out it 2012!

Ei perkele , puolisentoista kuukautta vielä ;>>

  4. Arto Mäenpää

Levyä on kyllä tehty 6 vuotta.. edellisestä levystä on 8 vuotta mutta tuota lättyä on tehty 6.

  5. Anaali-Timo

Erittäin hieno ja mahtimontinen 40 minuuttinen pläjäys oli. Ei aivan top kolmoseen nouse itsellä tämän vuoden metallijulkaisua etsiessä.

  6. Doc
