Amaranthen Elize Ryd tulevasta ”Helix”-albumista: ”Halusimme tällä kertaa tehdä monimutkaisemman albumin”

Kirjoittanut Arto Mäenpää - 1.10.2018

Suurta suosiota maassamme nauttiva ruotsalainen pop metal -sensaatio Amaranthe julkaisee järjestyksessään viidennen albuminsa nimeltä ”Helix” lokakuun 19. päivä Spinefarm Recordsin kautta ja saapuu helmikuussa levyn tiimoilta kahdelle jäähallikeikalle Suomeen. Tavoitimme puhelimitse kotoaan Ruotsista yhtyeen upeaäänisen laulajan Elize Rydin, joka kertoi hieman tulevasta albumista sekä omasta osallistumisestaan tämän vuoden Raskasta Joulua -kiertueeseen. Voit lukea haastattelun tästä:

Hei, mitä kuuluu?

Elize: Hei, hyvin menee.

Oletko antanut haastatteluja koko viikon?

Elize: Viimeiset kaksi viikkoa.

Joten, miten teidän kesä on sujunut? Soititte pari keikkaa myös Suomessa, menikö kaikki hyvin?

Elize: Joo todella hyvin!

Aika suuri osa ajasta tuntuu kuluvan lentokentillä, odotellessa.

Elize: Olin aivan raivoissani.

On todella hankalaa tehdä biisejä kuten esimerkiksi ”That song”.

Okei.

Esimerkiksi biisit kuten ”We Will Rock You” ja ”I Was Made For Loving You” ovat hyvin yksinkertaisia, mutta tajusimme, että ihmisten on helpompi sisäistää yksinkertaisia biisejä, ja sitä oli hauska kokeilla.

Rehellisesti sanottuna yksi lembibiiseistäni vetää livenä on ”That Song”. Siinä on paljon mitä kannattaa odottaa.

Elize: Ai onko!? Jessus se on mennyt minulta ohi…

Esimerkiksi Anthrax soitti ”Among the livingiä” ja on noita muitakin esimerkkejä.

Elize: Mahtavaa, kuulostaa hauskalta.

No nyt teillä on jo viisi albumia joten…

Elize: No nyt niitä on liikaa! No ei kai.

Elize: Sehän on loistava idea!

Tällä albumilla meillä on Nils mukana. ”Unified” on itseasiassa kirjoitettu suoraan hänen äänelleen. Halusimme näyttää faneille, miten mahtava lahjakkuus hän on.

Okei, mitäs voisit kertoa meille albumin örinäosuuksista?

Elize: Me todella kaipasimme Henrikiä.

Albumin lyriikoista.

Lopuksi hieman tulevaisuuden suunnitelmista. Mitä suunnitelmia sinulla on? Oletko mukana ”Raskasta Joulua” kiertueella tänä vuonna?

Elize: Joo me tehtiin noin jo neljällä levyllä eikä koskaan päästy isoille areenoille.

English version:

Swedish pop metallers Amaranthe is about to drop their fifth studio album entitled ”Helix” on October 19th via Spinefarm Records. Kaaoszine caught up with the lovely Elize Ryd and asked about the past summer, upcoming album as well as what does the future hold for Amaranthe. You can read the full interview here:

Hello, how are you?

Elize: Hey, I’m good. Lot of interviews, it drives me crazy! But it’s good, it’s good for us. Talking about our album and stuff.

Have you been doing press the whole week?

Elize: The past two weeks. Because you know, the more albums we release, the more recognition we get and the more work we have to do.

So first, how was the summer for you? You played a couple of shows in Finland also, was it all good?

Elize: Oh yes it was very good! We had one of the best festival summers in our career and we went back to Bloodstock. It was first time in seven years and we were welcome there again and Wacken, which was also six or seven years ago. We have a new booking agent and he is amazing. It’s fun to come back to places we played so many years ago. And Finland of course is always great because we love you guys and you know that already because you say that everytime  (Laughing). And Olof decided to propose in front of the Finnish audience because it feels like family to us. That was the first show this summer and then we came back and played in a very nice… What it was called again?

You played at Seinäjoki at Vauhtiajot festival.

Elize: Yes, it was also fun, smaller festival. It was really nice, we liked it alot. We took the flight, it was a lot of flying. Next summer we will definitely get a tour bus, we will never fly again. Or well, we have to but its ought to cut down the flying because that was crazy. And our luggage got lost almost on every show and we had to figure out where to find a new gear. It was quite an experience besides all the good things, that was probably the worst and the flights that got cancelled and we had to stay awake 26 hours in the airports… It was a quite override!

It guess it’s like most of the time you are in an airport, waiting.

Elize: Yeah and I don’t know what happened but the luggage got lost all the time. We missed so many flights so we had to wait even extra-long. When we went to Ukraine for example we missed the flight from Helsinki so we had to fly to (Kadievka?) and stay there in the hotel and go pack to airport and wait in the Ukrainian airport, I think it was like 10 hours or so before we could go and play the show. It was nice and fun summer, but it was also tricky with the logistics.

But those are kind of things you remember afterwards and you laugh at those. But in the moment when you are there I guess you are really mad.

Elize: Yeah, really fucking pissed and crazy. It takes a lot of mental health I can tell you. Of course you remember that and it’s like a fucking test you know. We went furious but also decided to never ever fly to festivals again. We are going to get a tour bus.

I guess that’s supposed to make things easier a bit.

Elize: Yes and much cheaper! You don’t even want to know how much money we spent on flights!

I guess a lot. Speaking about the upcoming album ”Helix” which is coming out in October.  I read the interview that you did in Wacken where you said that you actually wrote the album in two months. Is that something you normally do or is something that differs a lot from the past?

Elize: Yeah you know some people say that it was not a long time but that was like not so short time really. To make an album as a band, and we are not talking about pop songwriters. I work as a songwriter on a side of a band, and I write like four pop songs a day. This is how it goes, thats where people think that its crap and shit because it is so fast made but what is taking time is all the arrangements. I think the arrangements on this album are so fucking great. The drums are very technical, there are more advanced riffs. We wanted to focus on that and that was probably most stressful in the songwriting because ideas flow very fast if you’re used to writing a lot of songs. It comes a lot easier, I wouldn’t be able to do that on our first or second album. It took us two and half years to write our first album. I remember it like yesterday though. It was many years ago, a lot of thing have happened. You train your brain to make fast decisions and not over analyze things and to follow your inner voice, so to speak.

But it was different, we have never written album in two months. One of the reasons was because we had a tough touring schedule in the end of 2017. Basically we all got sick as hell. We couldn’t write anything on that period on the road which we actually did on the ”Massive Addictive” album. We were like ”Oh yeah let’s sit down and write songs” but it was just so chaotic and we couldn’t focus on the road. So we decided when we came home that we write two songs in a week and we would be on time. Of course we would have needed to push the release date if we weren’t finished. But we had so much things locked inside of us from the past year we thought that this would be the best time ever, spending two months writing songs and not doing anything else.

That was quite amazing and I think it made the album very solid. You can hear the same atmosphere follows through the album. You can hear on our previous albums that there has been sometime between the songs and on this album I think you can’t. It’s probably the difference.

Yeah, I was actually listening to it and I also noticed that it’s maybe a bit more technical musically. So was it kind of like your plan when you started writing it?

Elize: Yes it was definitely a plan. It is very hard to write songs like ”That song” for example. It’s so simple and it’s like not even pop, it’s more R&B. It was so brave, we thought how can we make a song with you know, small ingredients. We are all musically educated so we can handle our instruments very well and sometimes when you do that you actually want to take a step back and let the story speak for itself. It’s fun to challenge yourself to different directions, as an artist. It’s like for example people in sports,”What if I use one skate instead of two” (Laughing).

On our previous album we tried to challenge ourselves but in this album we thought that we are good at what we are doing, and we should focus on that. Like don’t try other stuff and stay on what is in our DNA and that was actually what made the album title ”Helix” ’cause it’s obviously like a string in a DNA thread.

Okay. You were speaking about more technical and direct stuff. Usually when it comes to more classical rock songs of all time, those songs are usually quite simple.

Elize: Yeah exactly. We started off doing very technical and advanced things, and for me I love to create harmonies. When I do my own demos I put like twelve harmonies in there. I love to play around with chores and create things with my own voice. There’s a lot of these things from our first albums and things that have stuck with us through the whole evolution. I think that on the ”Massive Addictive” we started more to think about the old classic rock way because it was like you said more attitude than technicality. So we wanted to bring that attitude forward, ’cause we have it inside of us as well and I think it’s very nice to see a band to grow in to that and be more like artists than high end musicians. And now we kind of found the right balance between being a professional and a rock star. I mean I fucking love Kiss and Queen and some songs are advanced but most of their hits are quite simple. Song like ”We will rock you” is very simple and Kiss’s ”I was made for loving you” is very simple and we realized it is easier for people to take in simpler songs. So it’s very nice to try out.

On the other hand, like I said we missed our roots and we went back to keeping it more technical and we don’t think about all the time that the audience has to understand it. Maybe they don’t like this album because it’s very technical. On the other hand maybe they didn’t like the previous album because it was simpler but great somehow. And actually to be honest today one of my favorite songs to perform live is ”That song”, it’s so fun. But I can’t wait to play the new songs live seriously. Like”365” and”Breaktrough stardust” because it has so much energy in it, and it takes us back to the era with the ”Razorblade sound” and”Automatic” and songs like that. It’s a lot to look forward to.

Do you see Amaranthe playing through an album some day? It has been quite a big trend recently in the metal scene at least.

Elize: Has it? Jesus Christ I missed it…

Well for example Anthrax was playing “Among the living” and there are other examples of that as well.

Elize: Awesome, that sounds pretty fun. We used to do that on the first album because we didn’t have any other songs to play…

Now you have already five albums so…

Elize: No we have too many! No, kidding. It’s not too many but it’s getting harder and harder to choose. Maybe it could be an idea actually, I don’t know if people would appreciate it. What do you think? Has this trend got a good response?

Yeah it has been. Or it has been when it comes to so called “old classic” albums. But I guess there are some albums from you that are turning 10 years shortly, to celebrate anniversaries for example.

Elize: Oh god that’s a good idea! Maybe we could celebrate albums 10th anniversary and do it every year and (Laughing)

(Laughing) So you don’t have to release anything new and you can just play the old one through!

Elize: Yeah I would love that! That’s all I can say, I do think about it but that’s an amazing idea. I’m going to take it to the band and ask what they do think about it.

So speaking about the upcoming album, for Nils it’s the first one in the band. How much did you actually pay attention to the vocals this time? What is actually your role when you are deciding the vocals on the album, do you decide them all or how does the process work?

Elize: Both me and Olof of course. He plays a riff and I respond, I can tell him like “no it’s shit” and say “yeah that sounds good” and it’s same with the keys, we look at them together. If one of us doesn’t like it we say its shit and it’s the same thing with the vocals when I come up with an idea. Obviously when I’m a singer, I write most of them and Olof may say “Yeah I like it but should it go more towards the top” but we always have a dialog about it. Which eventually leads to the final outcome.

And on this album, we have Nils, and I couldn’t think about his voice in my head actually I have to confess I needed to listen to albums he made in the past with Dynazty to get the feeling for example what his vocal range is. And actually we changed the tuning on the album a little bit so that would fit better to Nils’s voice and of course we realized some of the choruses are still too high for him to sing with his top voice. But he is such professional singer and he is very good at harmonies so it was very easy to work with him. It was very rare to begin with because after so many years to hear different male vocals. I listened so much to the demos so I got used to his voice and “Unified” is actually specifically written for his voice. We wanted to show to the fans that he is amazing and a musical talent.

Okay, so what can you tell us about the screaming side of the album?

Elize: We missed Henrik a lot. And one of the songs is like extended version of “Fury”. So it’s the “GG6” which is Henrik’s alter ego, it means “Growl God Six”, that is when he is like shining and he got one of those songs and maybe on the next album he is going to have like five of these songs. And we were like it’s time for him to work harder live so I can take breaks in the backstage and have a coffee, I look forward to that. And (Laughing) maybe Nils should have probably a few solo songs as well. Well Henrik is so good and he’s actually on every song on this album except for one, the last one I think. We just wanted to give him more stuff to work with because he deserves it. He is amazing, he is needed, and we love the growls.

So does he actually do them by himself or how does that work?

Elize: No Henrik doesn’t write. It was me and Olof who wrote everything on this album. Also the growls. Of course he comes with ideas, like for the “GG6”, that’s obviously his idea, the story behind the lyrics. When he comes up with the idea that he wants to present and then me and Olof wrote the lyrics and the vocal melody in the chorus. We arrange the songs, me and Olof and we have always done that. We are the songwriting team and together we wrote a lot of songs.

Speaking about the lyrical side of the album. Does the album have some kind of theme around it or is just separate songs?

Elize: I would say that it cannot follow the same theme. Because we had so many things that we needed to get out of our system. Things that we have learned during the years, and it’s more like towards a realistic theme rather than something made up. Like “Mechanical Illusion” or “Digital World” or things/songs like that. And it also reflects on the album title song, “Helix”, the DNA string which is kind of the real thing. When you listen to the lyrics it has a lot of hidden messages in there and a lot of personal experiences. More like an organic force rather than something else taking over.

Do you actually like writing from more personal point of view?

Elize: I like better to write about the other stuff because you don’t need to describe it afterwards. It’s obviously all from within and there is always something related to yourself. Songs like “Massive Addictive” or “Hunger” or “Helix”, there is always something that is personal but then you can hide it by putting it in words that people cannot realize exactly what it is about. But when you write only from the personal perspective it’s more like that you reveal what you really feel and think, but on the other hand you don’t have to say that. (Laughing)

Yeah if you hide it well!

Elize: Yeah but I actually cannot write any other way, than personal way. Or I can when I write to other artists or when I write the growls and stuff. When you go to different person’s perspective it is fun and I have to say it is easier to write that way because it gets very sensitive when you’re talking about your own life experiences.

Okay. So in the end, a bit about the future plans. What actual plans do you have? Will you be part of “Raskasta Joulua” this year?

Elize: Oh yes I will! I look so much forward to it. It’s such a nice way to end the year. It’s very appreciated in Finland. And I know Tarja is going to be there this year as well. It’s going to be nice to meet her, or I don’t know if we are going to do any shows together…

I think she is going to be at every show.

Elize: Oh! Yes okay! She also liked it very much, the concept and all. She said “I loved it and I want to do it again” and that’s exactly how I felt. But yes, I will be there.

So will you actually be at every show or at just some selected shows?

Elize: Actually just some selected shows. Amaranthe has a tour with Powerwolf and Kissing Dynamite, we have already any sold out shows and it is going to be a big tour in Europe. After that we are having a few shows by ourselves in Norway and then probably in Sweden and then I will go to Finland and before that I’m not available. So only a few shows, I’m not sure if it’s announced yet. And with Amaranthe we are going to come back and play two arena shows in Finland.

Are you actually excited that you are able to “lift up” the venues and probably get a bigger production and stuff like that?

Elize: Exactly. It’s the whole idea, it is going to be very amazing experience because it has never happened to us in the past. Well we have played in the festivals and those stages can be very big but still you cannot bring your own production if you’re not the headliner. So now we finally get the chance to just maximize everything. We are going to work a lot on the production and we have already started to do that so it’s very exciting.

How much did you actually pay attention to that when you were writing the upcoming album?

Elize: Actually I thought about it much more in the past. It was a big dream of mine. But on this album I didn’t think about it.

Okay, just usually bands have changed to make bigger songs for bigger arenas. But I guess you have already done those!

Elize: Yeah we have already done that on four albums and it never happened (Laughing).

So now you are in place where you wanted to be four albums ago.

Elize: Yes! We were like “Now it’s happening! Well I don’t give a shit anymore” and then it happened. It is difficult, when people think it is not happening it is happening.

Yeah that is how it usually goes.

Elize: Yeah that’s how it is. It is like universe is playing games with you. It’s like “We’re watching you struggle and when you finally give up that’s when we give you the gift”.

Thank you a lot for the interview. Is there anything you want to say for the Finnish fans who are coming to see you in February?

Elize: Like always. We think you’re the coolest, we love you guys. It will be such a great time. See you soon! And also thanks a lot to you for always keeping up on Amaranthe.
