Ruotsalaisen black metalin ruumiillistuma Dark Funeral esiintyi perjantaina 15. päivä toukokuuta Hyvinkäällä järjestetyssä Steelfest Open Airissa pääesiintyjänä esittäen klassikkoalbuminsa ”Secrets Of The Black Arts” kokonaisuudessaan. Kaaoszinen toimittaja Janne Partanen kävi jututtamassa yhtyeen perustanutta kitaristia Lord Ahrimania ennen yhtyeen illan keikkaa. Partanen keskusteli miehen kanssa mm. bändin ongelmista uuden vokalistin löytämiseksi sekä tietenkin yhtyeen uudesta albumista, jonka kimpussa yhtye parhaillaan on. On useita vuosia siitä, kun viimeksi soitette Suomessa. Teillä on ollut ongelmia vokalistien kanssa: bändin pitkäaikainen vokalisti Emperor Magus Caligula lopetti ja häntä seurannut Nachgarm oli bändissä vain vuoden. Nyt teillä on uusi vokalisti Heljarmadr. Kuinka hän liittyi bändiinne?

Lord Ahriman: Viime vuonna järjestimme 20-vuotisjuhlakeikan Tukholmassa ja etsimme tuolloin tapahtumaan avausbändiä. Päätimme antaa uusille bändeille mahdollisuuden soittaa isoimmille yleisöille tuossa tapahtumassa. Moni bändi haki sinne, mutta olin kuullut paljon hyvää Heljarmadrin Grá-bändistä, joten päätimme jutella hänelle asiasta. Sain heti todella hyvän kuvan hänestä: todella mukava tyyppi, ammattilainen ja täysillä mukana siinä, mitä tekee. Päätimme antaa hänen bändilleen mahdollisuuden soittaa juhlakeikallamme.

Keikan jälkeen Heljarmadr lähetti minulle sähköpostia, jossa kertoi saaneensa meistä hyvän kuvan. Hän tiesi, että etsimme uutta vokalistia, ja kertoi haluavansa kokeilla tuota pestiä. Positiivista oli, että hän asui Tukholmassa. Hän lauloi hyvin eri tavalla toisissa bändeissä, joten meille ei ollut aivan heti selvää, sopiiko hän Dark Funeralin vokalistiksi. Päätimme silti antaa hänelle mahdollisuuden. Käskimme hänen opetella muutaman biisin valmiiksi ja sovimme, että katsotaan sitten, miltä homma rupeaa tuntumaan. Heljarmadr tuli paikalle ja alle viikon harjoittelulla veti kappaleet todella hyvin. Olimme todella otettuja, joten hän jatkoi biisien opettelua ja hän onnistui yllättämään meidät viikko toisensa jälkeen. Hänellä on paljon monipuolisempi ääniala, kuin mitä hän käyttää muiden bändiensä kanssa. Hänen kanssaan on todella helppo tehdä töitä, ja hän tulee samalta suunnalta Ruotsia kuin minä ja Dominator, joten olemme samasta “maailmasta”. Aikaa kului ja sovimme hyvin yhteen. Kaikki meni hyvin, joten hän liittyi bändiimme ja loppu on historiaa.

Julkaisitte äskettäin kaksi uutta biisiä, “Nail Them To The Cross” ja “Temple Of Ahriman”, uuden vokalistin kera. Millaista palautetta olette saaneet?

Lord Ahriman: Todella hyvää. En ole oikeastaan nähnyt yhtää huonoa palautetta Heljarmardista. Vokalistin vaihto on todella iso juttu bändille, ja osasimme odottaa huonoa palautetta, mutta Heljarmard on saanut todella hyvän vastaanoton ja olemme siitä hyvillämme. Hän on todella lahjakas vokalisti, joka vahvistuu vain entisestään. Hän veti todella hyvin ensimmäisellä julkaisullaan ja miellyttää meitä kovasti.

Olivatko kappaleet valmiita, ennen kuin löysitte uuden vokalistin?

Lord Ahriman: Kappaleet olivat 95-prosenttisesti valmiina. Aikaisemmin Emperor Magnus Caligula kirjoitti kaikki sanoitukset, mutta nyt halusin musiikin kuvaavan enemmän sitä, mitä minulla oli päässäni kappaleita tehdessäni. En pidä itseäni sanoittajana, mutta välillä minulle tulee selkeitä teemoja ja ideoita samalla, kun sävellän musiikkia. Tuolloin haluan käyttää noita sanoituksia kappaleissa. Minulla oli todella synkkä ajanjakso elämässäni, ja juuri tuolloin kirjoitin suurimman osan uusista kappaleista. Kappale “Temple Of Ahriman” on kirjoitettu tuolloin.

Oletteko tekemässä uutta albumia?

Lord Ahriman: Totta kai olemme. Olen alkanut jo kirjoittaa useita kappaleita, jotka pitää vain saada valmiiksi. Uusien kappaleiden valmistumisessa on ollut viivettä laulajan ja basistin vaihtumisen takia, sillä meidän täytyi saada heidät live-kuntoon mahdollisimman nopeasti. Minulla on ollut myös kova homma saada oma elämäni raiteille parin vuoden takaisten ikävien tapahtumien jälkeen.  Kesti jonkin aikaa, ennenkuin sain itseni kuntoon, mutta tilanteesta syntyi muutama uusi biisi kuten “Nail Them To The Cross” ja “Temple Of Ahriman”. Minulla on nyt hyvä olo, sillä olen muuttanut elämässäni paljon asioita parin vuoden aikana ja tunnen olevani vahvempi kuin koskaan. Uudelle albumille meillä on useista biiseistä 70 % valmiina; osassa kappaleista on laulut ja osa vaatii enemmän työtä. Toivon, että saisin pari viikkoa aikaa, jotta voisin pelkästään keskittyä säveltämiseen, jotta saisimme levyn valmiiksi.

Mikä tekee hyvän Dark Funeral -kappaleen?

Lord Ahriman:  Syvyys, tunnelma, melodiat ja intensiivisyys!

Teillä on paljon todella kovia lainabiisejä; onko niitä tulossa lisää tulevaisuudessa?

Lord Ahriman: Sitä pitää katsoa, eihän sitä koskaan tiedä, mitä tapahtuu. 

Bändinne tunnetaan nopeudestaan ja teknisyydestään. Kuinka paljon teidän täytyy treenata, jotta säilytätte äkäisyytenne?

Lord Ahriman: Harjoittelemme useana päivänä viikossa itseksemme, mutta myös koko bändin kanssa. Tapaamme treenikämpillä ja soitamme muutamia biisejä läpi, jotta pysymme hyvässä iskussa. Me teemme niin pystyäksemme soittamaan näitä biisejä. Minulla on BC Rich -kitaroita treeniksen lisäksi kotona ja tyttöystäväni luona, jotta voin harjoitella aina, kun siltä tuntuu ja missä tahansa olenkin. Itse kokisin asian näin, että et voi kutsua olevasi “paha” tai “extreme” bändi, jos et osaa soittaa instrumenttiasi hyvin ja teet itsesi vain naurunalaiseksi. En väitä, että olisimme äärettömän teknisiä soittajia, mutta me soitamme osuutemme hyvin livenä ja studiossa. Teemme hyvän vaikutuksen niin livenä kuin levylläkin ja se on varmasti yksi syy miksi ihmiset pitävät musiikistamme. On olemassa joitain black metal -bändejä, jotka väittävät olevansa todellisesti pahoja ja brutaaleja, vaikka eivät osaa soittaa omia biisejäänkään. En koskaan halunut Dark Funeralin olevan tuollainen bändi. Olen aina laittanut musiikin ja muusikot ensi sijalle, toinen tärkeä asia kaikki se pimeys ja hullus, joka tekee meistä mitä me olemme. Jos saat kasaan hyvää musiikkia ja taitavia soittajia, jonka jälkeen yhdistät siihen raakuuden joka tulee musiikistamme antaa se uskottavuutta bändille. 22-vuoden jälkeen olemme vieläkin täällä ja soitamme sellaista musiikkia mitä haluamme. Haluan, että musiikkimme kertoo siitä, mitä me olemme.

Soitatte Steelfest-festareilla erikoisen keikan, joka käsittää kokonaisuudessaan “Secrets Of The Black Arts” -levyn. Mitä tuo levy merkitsee bändillenne?

Lord Ahriman:Minulla on aika vaihtelevat ajatukset tuosta levystä, mutta se on aina levy, joka nosti meidät pinnalle. Olen aina ylpeä siitä, joskin levyn julkaisun jälkeen asiat räjähtivät käsiin. Miehistö hajosi ja päätin jatkaa yksinäni uusien tyyppien kanssa. Aloitimme kunnolla keikkailun ja kaikki muuttui, tuolloin kirjoitin toisen albumimme ”Vobiscum Satanas” joka oli todella helppo kirjoittaa. Minulla on paljon hyviä muistoja tuosta levystä, sillä se aloitti tämän kaiken minulle. Olen vieläkin yhteydessä senaikaiseen miehistöön ja Blackmoonin kanssa olin hyvissä väleissä loppuun asti. Joten minulla on vaihtelevat ajatukset, koska kun ajattelen sitä levyä, ajattelen samalla edesmennyttä ystävääni. Se on joskus todella vaikeaa. Kaikki levyt, joita kirjoitan, ovat sillä hetkellä kaikkien tärkeimpiä minulle. Joten nyt olen todella innostunut tulevasta uudesta levystä, vaikka vanhemmat levyt tulevat aina olemaan tärkeitä ja osa minua.

Kaikkien näiden vuosien jälkeen: onko jotain, mitä haluaisit muuttaa tuolla levyllä?

Lord Ahriman:Kyllä vain, useita asiota ja varmaan eniten juuri levyn valmistumisen jälkeen. Minulla oli vähän ongelmia ensimmäisten levyjen teon kanssa, sillä en koskaan ollut tyytyväinen lopputulokseen, ja halusin aina korjata pienimmätkin viat. Sitten ryhdyin työskentelemään Peter Tägtgrenin kanssa ”Diabolis Interium” -albumin parissa, ja hän muutti ajattelutapani. Jäin joskus pitkäksi aikaa jumiin johonkin tiettyyn kohtaa biisissä, ja Peter vain käski minun lopettamaan sen. Hän huusi monitoriin: “Hitot, tästä jatketaan eteenpäin.”Lopulta ryhdyin kuuntelemaan häntä. Opin siirtymään asioissa eteenpäin, unohtamaan menneiden kaivelun ja keskittymään tulevaisuuteen. Joskin joidenkin vanhojen biisien kanssa minä vieläkin mietin: “Mitä hittoa minä olen tuossa soittanut?”

Olette nyt isolla kiertueella ja soitatte myös Nummirockissa tänä vuonna. Voitko valaista meitä, millainen setti teillä tulee tuolla olemaan?

Lord Ahriman:Kasaamme kokonaan uuden setin ja koetamme saada mukaan kappaleita jokaiselta levyltä. Tänä vuonna soitamme useissa eri paikoissa ja useimmat niistä keikoista on pääesiintyjänä, joten meillä on treeniksellä useita erilaisia settejä valmiina. Esimerkiksi soitamme Saksassa “Wave Gotik” -festivaalilla täysin erilaisen setin kuin normaalisti, eikä kukaan tiedä sitä. Emme ole koskaan aikaisemmin harjoitelleet näin montaa biisiä livesoittoon, sillä meillä on yli 30 kappaletta soittokunnossa.

Musiikkiala on muutoksessa ja osa bändeistä kääntyy “kick starter” yms. sivustojen puoleen hankkiakseen rahaa levyn tekoon. Mitä mieltä olet tällaisesta ilmiöstä? Voisiko Dark Funeral koskaan tehdä näin?

Lord Ahriman:En oikein usko. Me olemme kumminkin vanhan liiton bändi, emmekä vain toimi tuolla tavalla. Kuulin tästä muutama vuosi sitten. Eli sinä saat ihmiset maksamaan kalliin kiertuebussin, liput keikoille ja saatte vielä keikkapalkkionkin. En oikein pidä tuota reiluna. Tietysti tuntemattomille bändeille se on ihan ymmärrettävää. Tietysti jos tulisi sellainen tilanne, että tarvitsisimme rahaa studioon, saattaisin harkita asiaa, mutta pitäisin järjen päässä enkä ryhtyisi ahnehtimaan. Se ei kuulu maailmaan, missä elän. Nykyään et sitä paitsi tarvitse niin paljoa rahaa tehdäksesi hyvälaatuista musiikkia. Jos kuulisit kotistudiossani tekemäni uuden levyn demot, ymmärtäisit, sillä ne voisi laittaa suoraan levylle.

Mikä on mielestäsi black metalin tila tällä hetkellä?

Lord Ahriman:Itse asiassa juttelelimme tästä juuri bändin kesken. Minä en oikeastaan kuuntele uutta musiikkia. Pidän monista extreme-bändeistä, mutta kuuntelen todella paljon samoja bändejä kuin 90-luvulla. Viimeisin ostamani levy oli Faith No Moren uusin levy, joka oli erilainen, mutta hyvänkuuloinen. Viimeisin black metal -bändi, jota kuuntelin, oli Heljarmardin bändi Grá, josta pidän todella paljon. Se on uusi ja erilaisen kuuloinen bändi tässä genressä.

Viimeisiä sanoja lukijoillemme?

Lord Ahriman:On hyvä olla taas Suomessa ja olen onnellinen, että voimme soittaa kaksi keikka täällä. Emme ole kiertäneet kovinkaan paljon Skandinaviassa viime vuosina. Koetamme soittaa enemmän täällä päin tulevaisuudessa. Näemme teidät kaikki Nummirockissa!

Legendary Swedish black metallers Dark Funeral are in the final stages with their next full-length album. The band played a show at Steelfest Open Air in Hyvinkää, Finland on May 15th and Kaaoszine´s journalist Janne Partanen had the pleasure to meet the band´s founding guitarist Lord Ahriman before the band´s show to discuss about the current state of the band as well as about their upcoming next full-length album. It has been many years since last time you were in finland. You have got some problems with your vocalist first Emperor Magus Caligula left. After him there was Nachtgarm, who was in your band only a year. And now you have new vocalist Heljarmadr. How did Heljarmadr join up the band?

Last year we set up a special 20-years anniversary show in Stockholm. And as support, we were looking officially for an opening act for the event. After many discussions, we decided to give it a old/new type of generation tag. And give a new band that we felt deserved a change to play for a bigger audience. There were lots of bands that applied. And I heard many good things about Heljarmadr and his band Grá. So I decided to meet up with him. He gave me a really good impression, truly professional and totally into what he is doing. So we decide to give them a chance play with us. After the show, he sent me a email that he also had got very good feeling about us. And as he knew that we were looking a vocalist, he suggested that he could come and try out for us. Since he also lived in Stockholm things was very easy to set up, However, he sang so differently with his other bands, so we didn’t really know what to expect from him and if he’s way of singing would fit in with Dark Funeral. Anyhow, we decided to give him a chance to prove us wrong. We gave him a few songs to practice and then take it from there, step by step to see where we landed. A week later he came down to our rehearsal room and nailed the songs perfectly. We were nothing but impressed. He also proved to us that he’s vocal range was much wider than what he show in his other bands. And that he was truly determined to improve his kills to fit in even better with our sound. Another positive thing we also saw was that he was from the north part of Sweden, just like me and Dominator. We decided to give him a few more songs to practice and meet up a second time. Once again he impressed us by nailing it all perfectly. We decided to keep rehearsing together without making any decisions whether he was in or not. And let time show where it would bring us, apart or closer together. We realized quite quick that we enjoyed working and playing together very much. And the rest is history.

Dark Funeral released a new single ”Nail Them To The Cross/Temple Of Ahriman” with the new vocalist. What kind of feedback have you got from the fans?

Very good. I havent seen any negative feedback on Heljarmard whatsoever. To change Vocalist is obviously a big thing for some die hard fans. And we did expect some critisism of course, but as said. People have truly welcomed Heljarmadr, and I’m really glad for that. He’s an amazing vocalist, with a great and professional attitude. And he pulled off an amazing job on his debut single with us, which also by the way have reciecved a lot of praise, which is very cool too of course.

Were the two new songs ready before you found Heljarmard?

The songs were 95% ready. I even had some text written down already. Before, Caligula wrote all the lyrics, but this time i wanted the lyrics to portray what was on my mind when I wrote the actual music. So I decided to keep on writing notes as ideas popped up along the way. I really dont see myself as a lyricist, but from now on, and if some more concrete ideas pops up while I’m writing new music, I will obviously use it for the song(s). I come from this period of my life that pretty much plain black. And a lot of the new music was writen during this period, even the song ”Temple Of Ahriman”.

Are you making a new album?

Of course we are. I have written quite a few songs already, I/we just need to complete them. There has unfortunately been a delay on it because of the vocal and bassist change. And on top of that, I have also worked very hard to get back on track with my own life after a tough period and also after some life changing stuff happened a few years ago. On a positive note, that dark period
did fuel and gave birth to a lot of new songs like ”Nail Them To The Cross” and ”Temple Of Ahriman”. Anyway, nowadays I feel very good and infact stronger then ever. So I and the band are definately back again as a strong force to count on! Right now, all I hope is to get few weeks blank in my schedule so I can fully focus on to complete the new album…

What makes a good Dark Funeral song?

The depths, atmosphere, melodies and the intensity!

Dark Funeral has lots of great cover songs. Are you making new cover songs?

Will see about that, you never know…

Your band is know of being really fast and technical band. How much do you have to practice to maintain that ferocity?

We practice several days a week, in person, but also together as a band in the rehearsalroom.  That’s what one have to do to be able to improve and to keep up playing our type of music. Beside the rehearsalroom, I also have BC Rich guitars at home and at my gilrfriends place, so that I can practice wherever I am, whenever I feel for it. Here’s the way I see it. You can’t really claim to be an extreme or evil band, if you will, If you cant play your instrument and perform your songs well live on stage. We are dedicated professionals, and know what we are doing, and we do pull off our music very well I think. That’s probably also why we make such a strong impact on the crowd when we perform live. There are quite a few black metal bands out there that claim to be so brutal and evil, but all they got attitude, not playing skills. I never wanted DARK FUNERAL to be that kind of a band. I have always put the music and musicianship in the first place. Secondly, all the other dark and insane stuff that makes Dark Funeral to DARK FUNERAL comes of course. It has to come as a package. If you can pull off a combination of good music, good musicianship and then top it with the extremity that comes with our type of music, it will also give you more credability as a band. 22 years later, we’re still around, doing better then ever. It should speak for itself I think.

You are playing a special show here in Steelfest 2015. You are playing ”Secrets Of The Black Arts” album here. What does this album mean to the band and you?

I have quite mixed feelings on that album, but it was afterall ”thee” album that put us on the metal map once and for all. So I will always be proud of it of course. Upon it’s release everthing just exploded and we were in the highlight all over the world . Shortly after, the lineup also exploded, but I got some new guys together and continued what I had started as the one and only founding original member left. At the same time, we started touring, wrote another album ”Vobiscum Satanas” and just went with the flow. Anyhow, I have lots of good memories from the time that record was written and released. Beside Blackmoon (RIP), who I was in touch untill the very end, I am still in touch with the rest of the guys that played on that record. Every record you write is the most important record for that time being. So at the moment I’m in ”Nail Them To The Cross” mode so to speak and let the past also stay in the past….

After all this time is there something you would like to chance in that album?

Oh that’s many things, especially shortly after it was completed in the studio. I had this problem with myself on our first couple of albums. I was was never satisfied with the result. When i worked with Peter Tägtgren on the ”Diabolis Interium” album (2001), I remember he made a point, which helped me to chance my way of thinking. I sometimes got stuck in different parts of the songs we were recording, and wanted to change this and that, and Peter was like shouting at me me to stop. Somehow I guess it woke me up and eventually I realised how unnessesary this behaviour was. I learned to move on and stop thinking of what had been done already, and be proud of it, move on and look at the future instead of the past. But still, sometimes when I listen to the old stuff I’m like ”what the fuck did I do it like that”, but I have learned how to live with it….

You are on a tour right now and you are also playing in Nummirock this year. Can you tell what kind of set are you playing there?

We are going to put together a whole new set and play songs from all of our albums. This festival season we we rehearsed and put together alot of different setlist. We have over 30 song ready to play live so we’re more then ready to give you all a great variety and our very best at all festivals around Europe this summer!

Music business is chancing. Some bands have turn to ”kick starter” etc. to make new albums.
What do you think about that and could you ever do it with Dark Funeral?

I dont think so. We are an old school band and dont work that way. I heard about it few years ago. So you get people to pay your expensive tour bus, pay expensive show tickets to see you live and then pay pay you a fee on top of that. I dont think thats fair. But sure, for unknown bands, without a proper budget, I sure can understand. And obviously, if there was a situation where we would need for ex a studiobudget I guess I could consider it, but then I would make it real and balanced.

In your opinnion what is the state of black metal today?

I was just talking with the band about this. I dont really listen to new music that much. I like lots of extreme bands, but i mainly listen to bands from the 80’s and 90`s. The latest album i bought was Fate No More’s new album. It’s very different but good. From the black metal scene the latest stuff I enjoyed was our new vocalists Heljarmard’s band ”Grá”.Other then that I havent really kept much up to date unfortunately.

Any words for our readers?
Good to be back in Finland and i am happy that we’re invited to play two festival here this summer. Durimng the last couple of years we havent really played much in Scandinavia, but we will try and play more here in the furture, that’s a promise! See you at Nummirock!!!
