Puolalainen death metal-yhtye Decapitated on ollut toiminnassa kohta 20 vuotta. Bändin ensimmäinen albumi ”Winds of Creation” ilmestyi vuonna 2000, ja nyt 26. syyskuuta bändi julkaisee kuudennen ”Blood Mantra” -nimeä kantavan albuminsa Nuclear Blastin kautta. Kaaoszine tavoitti yhtyeen perustajajäsenen, kitaristi Waclaw ”Vogg” Kieltykan puhelimen välityksellä ja kysyi mieheltä mm. uudesta albumista sekä Puolan metalliskenestä. Terve! Miten sinulla ja Decapitatedilla menee?

Vogg: Decapitedilla menee tällä hetkellä todella hyvin. Meillä on uusi kokoonpano, jolla sujuu hommat hyvin yhdessä. Äänitimme juuri uuden albumin, joka julkaistaan Nuclear Blast Recordsin kautta syyskuun lopulla. On hienoa, että uusi albumi julkaistaan pian. Tällä viikolla vedimme kesän viimeiset festarikeikat: soitimme Wacken Open Airissa, Summer Breezessä, Bloodstockissa ja muutamalla pienemmällä festarilla sekä muutamalla festarilla Puolassa. Pari viime kuukautta on ollut todella kiireistä aikaa kirjoittamis- ja äänittämisprosessin, miksauksen ja festareiden kanssa.

Juuri nyt pidämme pienen tauon, lokakuun puoliväliin saakka. Syyskuussa treenaamme ja valmistelemme uusia biisejä. Lokakuun puolivälissä lähdemme kiertämään USA:ta Gwarin kanssa. Gwar on todella vanha ja tärkeä bändi Jenkeissä, joten toivottavasti meillä on siellä hieman erilaista yleisöä kuin keikoillamme yleensä. Olen todella iloinen tästä kiertueesta. Bändillä menee nyt todella hyvin, odotamme tulevia keikkoja ja suunnittelemme jo joitain keikkoja ensi vuodelle.

Tuleva albuminne ”Blood Mantra” tulee olemaan kuudes täyspitkänne. Mitä voimme odottaa kyseiseltä albumilta? Tuleeko se olemaan perinteinen tekninen death metal-albumi, vai onko luvassa joitain yllätyksiä? Entä miten vertaisit tulevaa albumia aikaisempiin levytyksiinne?

Vogg: Fanit voivat tietenkin odottaa uutta Decapitated-albumia, joka tulee olemaan äärimetallia, mutta en tiedä, voiko sitä kutsua tekniseksi death metalliksi. Ensimmäiseen tai toiseen albumiimme verrattuna uudet biisit eivät ole niin teknisiä. Keskitymme enemmän grooveen, raskauteen ja hyvään soundiin. Tällä julkaisulla tulee olemaan hyvä soundi, joka kuulostaa mahtavalta livenä. Ihmiset voivat ehkä odottaa kypsempää levyä. Ja kuten aina, teemme jokaisesta albumista hieman erilaisen kuin edellinen.

Meillä on tällä levyllä uusi miehitys, uusi rumpali Michal Lysejko. Olen edelleen pääsäveltäjä, 100 prosenttia musiikista on minun tuotostani. Tällä kertaa kirjoitin myös rummut, koska Michal liittyi bändiin noin kolme kuukautta ennen äänityksiä. Meidän täytyy saada vielä enemmän aikaa soittaa yhdessä, ennen kuin voimme luoda yhdessä uutta musiikkia.

Tällä albumilla on yhdeksän aivan uutta biisiä, ja sen kesto on noin 45 minuuttia, joten se on uramme pisin levy, ehkä jopa hieman liian pitkä. Albumin tavallinen versio sisältää kahdeksan biisiä, mutta siitä tullaan julkaisemaan myös toinen versio, joka sisältää bonuskappaleen ja puolituntisen DVD:n, jolla on materiaalia sekä studiosta että kiertueelta. Toivon, että se on mielenkiintoinen. Tällä albumilla jokainen biisi on hieman erilainen; otimme mukaan hieman kaikenlaista raskasta musiikkia, black metallista ja old school death metallista jonkinlaiseen rockiin, jopa stoner rockin tunnelmaan. Joten meillä on melkein kaikkea sekoitettuna moderniin soundiin, vähän kuin ”Organic Hallucinosiksella”. Luulen, että nämä biisit kuulostavat mahtavalta livenä. Saamme myös todella siistin settilistan, kun sekoitamme uusia ja vanhoja biisejä.

Mistä olette saaneet inspiraatiota ”Blood Mantran” lyriikoihin? Millaisia teemoja ne käsittelevät?

Vogg: Jatkoimme tavallaan samaa polkua, jonka aloitimme edellisellä albumillamme ”Carnival is Forever”. Uuden levyn lyriikat ovat siis jatkumoa edellisellä levyllä käsittelemillemme asioille, kuten ihmisyys, sota sekä erilaiset paskat asiat, joita on maailmassa on meneillään. Käsittelemme myös muita asioita, mutta nuo ovat pääteemoja.

Olette jo julkaisseet tulevalta levyltänne biisin nimeltä “The Blasphemous Psalm To The Dummy God Creation“. Miksi valitsitte juuri tämän biisin?

Vogg: Mietimme pitkään, minkä biisin valitsisimme näyttämään ihmisille, miltä kuulostamme vuonna 2014. Valinta oli vaikea, koska jokainen biisi tällä albumilla on erilainen. “The Blasphemous Psalm To The Dummy God Creation“ on räjähtävä biisi ja tavallaan kuulostaa oldschoolilta. Päätimme valita tämän biisin myös siksi, koska se ei ole liian pitkä. Se on lyhyt esimerkki uuden albumimme soundista. Kysyimme myös Nuclear Blast USA:n ystävämme mielipidettä, ja hänen mielestään tämä biisi oli paras. Yritimme toimia hieman kuin tiimi ja päättää yhdessä. Halusimme jonkin vahvan biisin, jotta ihmisten reaktio olisi ”vau, mitä helvettiä!”. Jotta ihmiset eivät pettyisi, halusimme antaa heille ensin räjähtävän biisin ja sen jälkeen loput albumista.

Kun nyt olet ”mastermind” Decapitatedin musiikin takana, kertoisitko jotain tulevan abumin kirjoittamisprosessista?

Vogg: Tällä kertaa kirjoitin kaikki instrumentit itse, myös rummut, bassot ja laulut. Sävelsin kaiken asunnossani ja kitaroiden äänittämiseen ja rumpujen kirjoittamiseen käytin tietokonetta. Sävelsin levyn tavallaan perinteisellä tyylillä, istuin kitarani kanssa ja jammailin niin pitkään kuin pystyin. Kun keksin hyvän riffin, painoin vain äänitysnappia ja näin äänitin mielestäni parhaat ideat, minkä jälkeen yhdistin ne kokonaisiksi biiseiksi. Sitten yritin miettiä, millaisia rumpujen pitäisi olla. Yleisesti ottaen äänitin kaiken tietokoneella pienessä kotistudiossani. Loin musiikkia ja yritin tehdä parhaani. Kuuntelin sitä ja mietin, onko tempo hyvä ja onko musiikki tarpeeksi raskasta ja muuta.

Sitten näytin biisit bändikavereilleni ja kuuntelin heidän mielipiteitään. Kysyin myös vaimoni ja tyttäreni mielipiteitä. Jos he sanoivat musiikin olevan huonoa, yritin muuttaa sitä paremmaksi. Prosessi oli yksinkertainen, ja tämä oli ensimmäinen kerta, kun tein musiikkia tällä tavalla. Edellisellä albumilla kirjoitin kotonani riffejä, minkä jälkeen sovitimme ne rumpalin kanssa treenikämpällä. ”Carnival Is Foreverin” sävellysprosessissa rumpalillamme oli suuri rooli. Mutta tällä kertaa minulla ei ollut vaihtoehtoja, sillä meillä ei ollut pitkään aikaan rumpalia. Löysin hänet vasta juuri ennen äänityksiä tammikuussa, joten minun täytyi kirjoittaa kaikki. Olin aivan ”voi paska, tämä on minulle suuri haaste, koska en ole rumpali”, mutta minulla on joka tapauksessa paljon kokemusta monien eri rumpaleiden kanssa soittamisesta, joten ajattelin olevani valmis tekemään kaiken itse. Olen melko tyytyväinen lopputulokseen.

Teillä on ollut melko useita miehistönvaihdoksia vuosien varrella. Edellisen albuminne ”Carnival Is Foreverin” jälkeen on myös tapahtunut muutoksia. Millaista on ollut työskennellä uudella kokoonpanolla ”Blood Mantralla”?

Vogg: Kuten kerroin, en työskennellyt paljoa uuden kokoonpanon kanssa luodessani uusia biisejä. Harjoittelimme rumpalin kanssa viimeiset kaksi kuukautta ennen studioon menoa. Minulla oli biisien sävellykset ja lopulliset sovitukset, ja menin treenaamaan niitä uuden rumpalin kanssa treenikämpälle. Suurimman osan ajasta Michal työskenteli yksin, lähetin vain hänelle uudet biisit. Olin jo kirjoittanut rummut, ja hän treenasi niitä yksin. Emme työskennelleet kovin paljoa yhdessä ennen äänitystä, jokainen meistä harjoitteli itsekseen. Treenasimme jopa enemmän vanhoja biisejä valmistautuaksemme kiertueille.

Kun olin säveltämässä biisejä, olimme samaan aikaan kiertueella Children of Bodomin kanssa Euroopassa ja Lamb of Godin kanssa Britanniassa. Kun otimme Michalin rumpaliksi, meillä oli ehkä kaksi viikkoa aikaa valmistella Lamb of God-kiertueen settilista, joten työskentelimme sen parissa ja minä työstin yksin uutta albumia.

Olette tehneet melko mittavan uran Decapitatedin kanssa. Miten kuvailisit muutosta musiikin tekemisessä 90-luvun puolivälistä tähän päivään, erityisesti Puolassa?

Vogg: 90-luvulla, kuten tänä päivänäkin, meillä oli vahva metalliskene. Tämäntyyppinen musiikki on kehittynyt paljon sitten vuosien 1993–94. Puolassa oli 90-luvulla tietenkin iso deathmetal-skene, johon kuuluivat mm. Vader, Hate ja Behemoth, ja nykyään Behemoth on valtavan suosittu. Nyt bändit edustavat monipuolisemmin metalligenrejä kuin 90-luvulla. 90-luvulla suosituimmat genret olivat death metal ja death thrash metal, sitten tuli Norjasta black metal, josta tuli suosittua ja puolalaiset bändit alkoivat soittaa kuten ne tyypit.

Tällä hetkellä puolalainen metalli on vahvaa black ja death metallin saralla, mutta myös suosituissa genreissä, kuten deathcore. Sitten meillä on esimerkiksi doommetal-skeneä edustava Blinded, joka soittaa todella hyvin. Meillä on myös joitain progressiivisia rockbändejä, kuten kuuluisuutta saanut ja Eurooppaa kiertänyt Riverside. Ja totta kai meillä on Vader, joka on vielä hengissä ja aktiivinen, heillä on nyt uusi kokoonpano. Nämä asiat ovat muuttuneet paljon vuosien saatossa, homma oli hieman erilaista 15 vuotta sitten, mutta se on edelleen vahvaa ja kaikki nuo bändit soittavat edelleen ja nyt heillä on hyvät ajat levyttää.

Olemme saaneet vuosien varrella Puolaan paljon uusia keikkapaikkoja. Ihmiset ovat varmaankin alkaneet olla avomielisempiä erilaisia musiikkityylejä kohtaan. 90-luvulla metallityypit olivat todella ahdasmielisiä, kuten todella omistautuneet äärimetallifanit. Nyt metallifanit ovat avomielisempiä ja suvaitsevaisempia toisiaan kohtaan.

Ovatko ihmisten asenteet äärimetallia kohtaan Puolassa mielestäsi muuttuneet sinä aikana, kun Decapitated on ollut toiminnassa?

Vogg: Decapitated on aina tunnettu bändinä, jossa nuoret tyypit soittavat death metallia. Kun aloimme äänittää ensimmäistä albumiamme vuonna -99, olimme suunnilleen 15–16-vuotiaita jameitä mainostettiin maailman nuorimpana death metal-bändinä, joka soittaa kuin Vader tai Cannibal Corpse. Tämän takia kaikki äärimetallifanit näkivät meidät lapsina. He eivät pitäneet suosiotamme siistinä tai oikeutettuna, joten sen takia meistä ei aluksi pidetty Puolassa. Metallifanithan ovat todella suorasukaisia, ja jos he eivät pidä jostain, he kyllä näyttävät sen. Varsinkin kun he näkevät nuorien poikien aloittavan soittamisen ja heidät nähdään heti jossain lehden kannessa, se on outoa. Meillä oli Puolassa aluksi aika vaikeaa.

Lisäksi kolme ensimmäistä albumiamme olivat hieman liian kalliita puolalaisille metallityypeille. Levy-yhtiönämme oli Earache Records eikä meillä ollut Puolassa levy-yhtiötä, joten albumeiden levitys tapahtui Britanniasta käsin. Hinnat olivat sitten liian kalliita puolalaisille faneille, joten he eivät voineet ostaa levyjä, vaikka olisivatkin halunneet.

Vuosien kuluessa ihmiset näkivät, että jatkamme tätä hommaa ja teemme aidosti sitä, mitä teemme, emmekä tee mitään paskaa. Mielestäni soitamme 100-prosenttisesti aitoa äärimetallia ja luulen, että sen vuoksi olemme vihdoin saaneet kunnioitusta omassa maassamme. Vihdoinkin huomaan, että ihmiset alkavat kunnioittaa meitä, lähes 20 vuotta skenessä olemisen jälkeen. Puolalaiset ja metallifanit todella arvostavat sitä, mitä teemme. Se on todella siistiä.

Entä mitä ajattelevat äärimetallista ja teidän musiikistanne ihmiset, jotka eivät kuuntele metallia?

Vogg: Emme tietenkään ole USA tai Britannia, meillä ei ole vahvaa rock ’n roll-perinnettä täällä. Monet kuuntelevat radiossa soivaa musiikkia eivätkä välitä metallista tai rockista. Mutta on myös ihmisiä, jotka ovat tavanneet jonkun bändistä ja tajunneet, kuinka tämä homma toimii, ja kuunnelleet vähän metallia ja kunnioittaneet sitä.

Tiedän, että Behemothilla on ollut ongelmia täällä, koska he näyttävät halveksuvansa uskontoa ja tekevät sen hyvin. Heidän on täytynyt perua joitain keikkoja sen takia, ja se on perseestä. Puolalaisilla on vielä paljon asioita opittavana, etenkin se, että tämä on musiikkia. Tämä on aitoa ja vakavaa, mutta samalla viihdettä.Toivottavasti ihmiset alkavat tulevaisuudessa ottaa hieman rennommin. Mutta se vie aikaa. Muutokset ovat nyt alkamassa, maamme on alkanut näyttää erilaiselta kuin 10 vuotta sitten, alamme näyttää osalta Eurooppaa. Puolalaiset ovat alkaneet olla avomielisempiä ja katsoa asioita isommassa perspektiivissä, mikä on todella hienoa.

Entä onko teillä jo jotain suunnitelmia ”Blood Mantran” julkaisun jälkeen?

Vogg: Albumi julkaistaan syyskuun lopulla, ja suunnitelmana on soittaa kiertueita, tehdä mahdollisimman paljon haastatteluja, promota uutta materiaalia niin paljon kuin pystymme ja soittaa mahdollisimman paljon keikkoja. Loppuvuodesta meillä on USA:n kiertue Gwarin kanssa ja marraskuun lopulla 10 keikkaa Puolassa. Joulukuun lopussa heitämme keikan kotikaupungissamme Krosnossa, hieman joulupippalot-tyyliin. Yritämme buukata jotain ensi vuodelle. Joten tulevaisuuden suunnitelma on soittaa keikkoja ja promota uutta albumia.

Kiitos haastattelusta! Onko jotain, mitä haluaisit sanoa suomalaisille faneillenne?

Vogg: Haluaisin lähettää terveisiä ystävilleni Medeiassa ja Children of Bodomissa.Vietimme heidän kanssaan aikaa Euroopan kiertueella, ja se oli mahtavaa. Toivottavasti pääsemme vihdoin soittamaan Suomessa, ensi vuonna meidän täytyy tehdä niin. On varmasti hienoa tulla sinne ja toivon, että meillä on hyvä keikka ja hauskaa siellä.

The Polish death metal band Decapitated has been active for almost 20 years. Their first album “Winds of Creation” came out in 2000 and now on the 26^th of September Nuclear Blast will release their 6^th album called “Blood Mantra”. Kaaoszine talked on the phone with the founding member and guitarist Waclaw “Vogg” Kieltyka and asked him about the upcoming album and the Polish metal scene.

Hello! How’s it going with you and Decapitated?

Vogg: Everything is going very well with Decapitated right now. We have a new line-upand we feel very good together. We just recorded a new album called “Blood Mantra” and it will be released by Nuclear Blast Records in the end of September. It’s a cool thing to have a new album out pretty soon. We just finished our summer festivals this week. We did a couple shows, including Wacken Open Air, Summer Breeze, Bloodstock and a couple of smaller festivals and a couple of festivals in Poland. The last couple of months have been kind of a really busy time, with the writing process, recording process, mixing and the festivals.

Right now we have a little break, until mid-October. During this break we’ll have rehearsals in September and we’ll prepare new songs. In mid-October we’ll tour in the US with Gwar. Gwar is a very old band and really important band in the US, and hopefully we’ll have a different crowd than we usually have. I’m really happy with this tour. The band is doing really well right now, we’re waiting for the upcoming shows and planning already some shows for next year.

The upcoming album “Blood Mantra” will be your 6^th full-length. What can we expect from the album, is it going to be an orthodox technical death metal album, or are there some surprises? And how would you compare this upcoming album to your previous ones?

Vogg: For sure fans can expect another Decapitated album, which will be extreme metal, but I don’t know if we should call it technical death metal.  Compared to the first or second album, the new songs are not that technical. We concentrate more on the groove and heaviness and good sound. This is a good-sounding release, which will sound great live. People can expect probably a more mature album. As usual, we make every album a bit different.

We have a new line-up on the album, a new drummer on board, Michal Lysejko. I’m still the main composer, 100 % of the music is my work. This time I wrote the drums too, because Michal joined the band about three months before recording. We need more time to play together before we start creating new music together.

The album has nine brand new songs, and it lasts for about 45 minutes, so it’s the longest album in our career, maybe a bit too long. The regular version contains eight songs, and there will be another version with a bonus track and a half-an-hour DVD, which includes material from the studio and also tour. I hope it will be interesting. Every song is kind of different on this album, we touched a bit every kind of heavy music, starting from black metal, old school death metal to even some kind of rock, even stoner rock atmosphere. So we pretty much have everything mixed with some modern sound, a bit similar to “Organic Hallucinogenis”. I think these songs will sound really good live. We’ll get a really cool setlist, where we’ll mix some new and old songs.

Where have you drawn inspiration to the lyrics on “Blood Mantra”? What kinds of themes are they dealing with?

Vogg: It’s kind of similar with the way we started to get on the last album “Carnival Is Forever”. It’s a continuation of the things we talked about on the last album, about humanity, war, wrong things going on, in general things like that. There are also other things we talk about, but those are the main subjects.

You’ve already let out a song called “The Blasphemous Psalm To The Dummy God Creation“ from the upcoming album. Why did you choose this particular track?

Vogg: We thought about it a lot, which song we’d choose to show to people how we sound in 2014. It was hard to choose, every song on this album is a bit different. “The Blasphemous Psalm To The Dummy God Creation“ is a blasting song and kind of old school sounding. We decided to choose that one, because it’s not too long. It’s a short example of the sound of our new album. We also asked the opinion of our friend from Nuclear Blast US and he said that this song would be the best. We tried to work a little bit like a team and choose together. We wanted to do something strong, so people would be like “whoa, what the hell!”. So that people would not be disappointed, we wanted to give them a blasting song first and then the rest of the album.

Since you are the “mastermind” behind Decapitated’s music, could you tell something about the upcoming album’s writing process?

Vogg: This time I wrote everything by myself, all instruments, including drums, bass and vocal lines. I composed everything in my flat and I used a computer for recording the guitars and also to write the drums. I wrote it in a kind of a traditional way, sitting with the guitar and jamming as long as I could. When I got a good riff, I just pressed record, and so I recorded in my opinion the best ideas and then connected them to createfull songs. And then I tried to imagine what kind of drums I should use. In general, I recorded everything on my computer in my smallhome studio. I just created it and tried to do my best. I listened to it, and I thought over if the tempo was good, if it was heavy enough and stuff like that.

Then I showed the songs to my bandmates and listened to their opinion. I also asked what my wife and daughter thought about them. If they said it sucked, I then tried to change it and make it better.It was a simple process and this was the first time I created music like this. On the last album I wrote some riffs at home and then I arranged the music with the drummer in the rehearsal room. On “Carnival Is Forever” our drummer had a big role in the composing process. But this time I had no choice, because I didn’t have a drummer for a long time. I found him just before the recordings in January, so I had to take this challenge to write everything. I was like “oh shit, this will be a big challenge for me, cause I’m not a drummer”, but anyway I’ve had a lot of experience playing with many drummers in the past, so I thought I was ready to do everything by myself. I’m pretty happy with the final result.

You’ve had quite many line-up changes during the years. Some changes have also been taking place since your previous album “Carnival Is Forever”. How has it been working with the new line-up on “Blood Mantra”?

Vogg: Like I said, I didn’t work much with the new line-up to create the songs. I practiced with the drummer for the last two months before entering the studio. I had the composition and the final arrangements of the songs and then I went to the rehearsal room to practice the new songs together with our new drummer. But most of the time Michal worked by himself, I just sent him files of the new songs. The drums were already written by me and he practiced them by himself. We didn’t work that much together before the recording, each of us practiced by ourselves. We even practiced more some old songs to prepare for the tours.

While I was composing the songs, we had some tours at the same time, with Children of Bodom in Europe and the Lamb of God tour in the UK. When we changed our drummer to Michal we had maybe two weeks to prepare the set for the Lamb of God tour, so we worked for that and I was working on the new album by myself.

You’ve made quite a long career with Decapitated. How would you describe the change in making music, particularly in Poland, from the mid-nineties to this day?

Vogg: In the 90’s as well as still today, we had a strong metal scene. This kind of music has evolved a lot since ’93-’94. Of course in the 90’s there was a big death metal scene in Poland with bands like Vader, Hate and Behemoth, and now Behemoth is huge. Right now we have more genres going on, bands representing more different genres of metal than in the 90’s. In the 90’s the most popular metal genres were death metal and death thrash metal, then there came black metal from Norway, then that started to be very popular and bands in Poland started to play like those guys.

Right now Polish metal is still strong in the black and death metal scenes. But also all those kinds of metal that are popular, like deathcore. Then we have this band called Blinded, they represent the doom metal scene and they are really good. We also have a couple of progressive rock bands, like Riverside, which is kind of a famous band, they’ve toured in Europe. And of course we have Vader, they still exist and record and they have a new line-up. These things have changed a lot during the years, it was a bit different 15 years ago, but it’s still strong and all those bands are playing great music and they have good times right now to record.

In Poland during the years we’ve gotten many new venues all over the country. People have probably started to be more open to different kinds of music. In the 90’s the metalheads were really narrow-minded, like really dedicated extreme metal fans. And now the metalheads are more open-minded and tolerant for each other.

Do you think in Poland people’s attitudes towards extreme metal have changed during the time Decapitated has been active?

Vogg: Decapitated has always been recognized as the band of young people playing death metal. When we started to record the first album in -99 we were like 15-16 and that was used to advertise us as the youngest death metal band on the planet who play like Vader or Cannibal Corpse. That’s why all the extreme metalheads saw us as kids. And they thought  that wasn’t cool or right. So that’s why people in Poland didn’t like us too much in the beginning when we started to play. You know, metal fans are really straight-on and if they don’t like something, they show that. Especially when they see young kids just starting and already on some cover of a magazine, it’s weird. We had some hard time in the beginning in our country.

Also our first three albums were a bit too expensive for the Polish metalheads. We were on Earache Records and we didn’t have a label here in Poland, so they distributed the albums from the UK. So the prices were too expensive for the Polish fan so they couldn’t get the CD’s even if they wanted to.

During the years people saw that we continued this and we’re really true with what we do, what we play and we don’t do any bullshit. In my opinion we play 100 per cent true extreme metal, and for that I think we’ve finally gotten respect in our country. Finally I can see that people are starting to respect us, after being almost 20 years in the scene, and the Polish community and metal fans really appreciate what we do. It’s very cool.

And what about the people who are not metalheads, what do they think about extreme metal and your music?

Vogg: Of course we’re not the US or the UK, we don’t have a big tradition of rock ‘n roll here. Lots of people listen to the songs playing on the radio and stuff like that and don’t care too much about metalor rock. But there are some people, who have met someone from the band and realized how this stuff works and listened to some metal, and they respect it.

I know that Behemoth have had some problems here in our country, they show their disrespect for religion and of course they are very good with that. They’ve had to cancel some shows, and that really sucks. There are still many things that the Polish people need to learn, especially that this is music. This is for real, but at the same time it’s only entertainment and hopefully they’ll start to be more relaxed in the future. But that takes time. The changes are starting now, the country has started to look different than even ten years ago, we’re starting to look like Europe. Polish people are starting to be more open-minded and to look at things from the bigger perspective and that’s really cool.

And what about after the release of “Blood Mantra”, have you already made plans for the future?

Vogg: The album will be released in the end of September and the plan is to play tours, to do as many interviews as possible, to promote our new stuff as much as we can and to play as many shows as possible. So in the end of the year we have the US tour with Gwar and in the end of November ten shows in Poland. In the end of December we have a show in our home town Krosno, a kind of a x-mas party. We’re looking to book something for next year. So that’s the main plan for the future, to play shows and promote the new album.

Thank you for the interview! Is there anything else you’d like to say to your Finnish fans?

Vogg: I would like to say hello for my friends from Medeia and Children of Bodom, we spent some time with them on the tour in Europe and it was great. Hopefully we can finally come to Finland to play some shows, next year we’ll have to do that. I’m sure it’ll be great to come there and I hope we can have a good show and a good time.
