New Yorkin katu nimetään Ramonesin muistoksi

New Yorkin Queensissa nimetään virallisesti lokakuun 23. päivä katu legendaarisen punkyhtye Ramonesin muistoksi. Katu sijaitsee Forest Hillsin High Schoolin edustalla, missä Johnny, Dee Dee, Tommy ja Joey tapasivat ensimmäisen kerran 1960-luvulla. Pojat asuivat tällöin huutoetäisyyden päässä toisistaan. Ehdotus ”The Ramones Way”-nimisestä kadusta meni läpi kaupungin neuvostossa heinäkuun 14. päivä Karen Koslowitzin toimesta. Nainen kannatti kadun nimeämistä uudelleen keskusteltuaan Joey Ramonen veljen, Mitchell Leigh Hymanin kanssa Queens Museumin ”Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones And The Birth Of Punk” -näyttelyssä huhtikuussa.

”Our community of Forest Hills has been the home of many famous artists. Many legendary musicians also attended Forest Hills High School including Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Burt Bacharach, as well as the members of the famous punk rock group the Ramones. The Ramones played well in the 1990s and received numerous accolades and awards including an induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Working with Joey Ramone’s brother and Forest Hills resident Mickey Leigh and fans of the band, I am so very pleased to honor our hometown musical heroes by renaming 67th Avenue and 110th Street in front of Forest Hills High School, right where it all started as ’The Ramones Way’.”

Yhä naapurustossa asuva Joeyn veli kommentoi kadun nimeämistä seuraavasti:

”I’m just so proud that this is actually going to happen. My efforts have culminated into something great happening for the Ramones and Ramones fans everywhere.”

Tämä ei ole ensimmäinen kerta, kun katu nimetään Ramonesin mukaan. Joeyn (1951-2001) kuoleman jälkeen, vuonna 2003 nimettiin Manhattanin East 2nd Streetin ja Boweryn kulmat aina CBGB-klubin kortteliin saakka ”Joey Ramone Placeksi”. CBGB on musiikkiklubi, jossa yhtye esiintyi usein 1970-luvulla. Siellä alkoi myös samoihin aikoihin Televisionin, Blondien, Patti Smithin, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakersin, The Crampsin sekä The Dictatorsin ura.
