Drunk Jackals on huomiota herättävä nimi. Itseäni ainakin kiinnosti tietää, millaista musiikkia sen niminen yhtye oikein soittaa. Kyseessä on kreikkalainen rock-yhtye, joka yhdistää karkeaan ilmaisuunsa niin stoner- kuin southern rockia ja groovaavia melodioita. Drunk Jackals julkaisi viime vuonna ”Seven Souls” -EP:n, mutta tänä syksynä ilmestynyt ”Countryside” on kreikkalaisyhtyeen ensimmäinen täysipitkä.

Drunk Jackals on neljän hengen yhtye, jossa basisti Christos tuottaa muhkeasti groovaavia riffejä muun muassa ”For Rnr”- ja ”Country Road” -kappaleilla. Kitaristi Leslie varmistaa särisevillä ja pörisevillä riffeillään stoner rockmaiset piirteet ”Ch-Check Out Thosessa” ja ”Salty Wet Brunettessa”. Panagos hoitaa rumpujen soittamisen ohessa perkussiot, joiden asema ”Country Roadissa” onkin keskeinen. Yhtyeen äänenä toimii Theo, jonka äänestä löytyy runsaasti hiekkapaperimaista karkeutta, mutta hänen äänensä taipuu myös pehmeään tulkintaan. Theon ääniala ei ole kuitenkaan kovin laaja, mikä särähtää aloitusraidalla korvaani. Pääsääntöisesti Theon ääni kuitenkin kestää ja yltää välillä upeisiin suorituksiin kuten ”Country Road” -kappaleella, jossa hänen äänensä on hunajaa korville.

Kreikkalaisyhtyeen debyytti on kirjava kokonaisuus, jolta mahtavimmaksi kappaleeksi nousee ajattoman ja kauniin kuuloinen ”Country Road”. Vastaavasti ”For Rnr” ja ”Gone Rogue” edustavat suoraviivaista rockia tarttuvilla, runnovilla riffeillään. Aloitusraita ”Explode” on albumin kokeilevin kappale erikoisen intronsa vuoksi. ”Che-Check Out Those” on rento ja pörisevillä riffeillä kyllästetty, jota kuunnellessa jalka alkaa väkisin vipattaa. Albumin päättävä ”Tennessee Whiskey” on passiivis-aggressiivinen kappale, kuin humaltuneen puristusote kallisarvoisesta tuopistaan. ”Tennessee Whiskey” on ylistys Jack Danielsille ja muille Tennesseestä kotoisin oleville viskeille.

”Countryside” on kaikkiaan hyvä albumi. Levyltä löytyy mukavasti vaihtelevuutta, ja ainoastaan kaksi kappaletta kuulostaa tasapaksulle. Vokalisti Theon persoonallinen ääni ei varmasti miellytä kaikkia, mutta ääni istuu hyvin albumin koruttomaan ja kaunistelemattomaan ilmaisuun. ”Countryside” on niin tunkkaisen ja huuruisen oloinen kuin tällaiselta southern- ja stoner rockia sekä groovia yhdistelevältä levyltä voi toivoa. Valitettavasti kyseisestä teoksesta ei ole painettu CD-levyjä, mutta vinyylin ystäville on onneksi tarjolla LP:tä. Ja löytyy albumi toki suoratoistopalveluista kuten Spotifysta.

Drunk Jackals feels a bit strange but an interesting name for a band. I got curious by the band’s name and wanted to know what kind of a music the band is playing. Drunk Jackals is a Greek rock band that combines its rough expression with stoner, southern rock and groovy melodies. Band released ”Seven Souls” EP last year but this autumn they put out their first full length album, ”Countryside”.

Drunk Jackals is a band of four, with bassist Christos playing fatty and groovy riffs for songs like ”For Rnr” and ”Country Road”. The guitarist Leslie makes sure stoner rocky features are present in his shattering and dirty playing style in songs like ”Ch-Check Out Those” and ”Salty Wet Brunette”. In addition to playing the drums, Panagos also plays percussions that have a central role in ”Country Road”. The voice of the band is Theo whose voice has sandpaper-like roughness. His voice is also bent into softer interpretation. However, his sound scale is not very wide which sticks out in the first track. Theo’s voice sounds mostly good, and on the ”Country Road” his voice is like honey to one’s ears.

The Greek band’s debut is a colourful album. The most awesome piece of the album is the timeless and beautiful ”Country Road”. Correspondingly, ”For Rnr” and ”Gone Rogue” represent more straightforward-kind-of expression with strong and crunchy riffs. The starting track ”Explode” is the most experimental song in the album due to its special intro. ”Che-Check Out Those” is made of relaxed and dirty riffs, which will force you to shake your legs. Album’s ”Tennessee Whiskey” is a bit passive-aggressive song. Anyway, it is a praise for Jack Daniels and other whiskeys from Tennessee.

”Countryside” is a great album. There are nice variations on the album, and only two songs sound like a flat one. I believe that vocalist Theo’s personal voice does not please everyone but his voice sits very well in the unembellished expression of the album. ”Countryside” is as naked and dirty as you can wish for for  an album that is combining both southern and stoner rock but also groove. Unfortunately, “Countryside” only comes in LPs. But you can find the album from streaming services like Spotify, too.
