Alkuperäinen Sepultura-laulaja Max Cavalera muistelee häntä vahvasti inspiroineita albumeita

Brasilialaisen metalliyhtye Sepulturan vuonna 1996 julkaistu albumi ”Roots” näki muutoksia yhtyeen sen aikaisessa tyylissä ja muutos ei ollu kaikkien mieleen. Vaikka albumi on kaupallisesti yksi yhtyeen menestyneimpiä, jotkut pitivät sitä soundiltaan liian kevyenä sopiakseen Sepulturan tyyliin. Nyt yhtyeen alkuperäinen laulajakitaristi Max Cavalera, vieraillessaan uudessa Talk Toomey -podcast jaksossa, kertoo häntä inspiroineista Korn– ja Deftones-albumeista, jotka saivat tekemään tyylillisiä muutoksia ”Roots”-levylle.

”I had no idea who those bands are. I even joked about the names. Korn, that’s a weird name, man. I don’t think that’s gonna fly. How wrong was I? But, yeah, I loved the music for real. Especially recording ”Roots” and ”Soulfly”, a lot of times, in the car, going in the studio, going up in Malibu, I was blasting, yeah, first Korn a lot, Deftones’s ”Adrenaline”, and I got to be part of the second, ”Around The Fur”, which is one of my favorite records of all time. That record is so good, man. It’s so killer. I still today, I listen to that and just go, ’Whoa, what a banger of an album.’ But, yeah, the first Korn is the same. It’s an incredible record. It has a lot of emotion, but it’s balls-heavy too. The grooves are fucking great.” Max Cavalera

Cavalera puolustautuu haastattelussa vahvasti ”Roots”-levystä tulleelta kielteiseltä palautteelta.

”I don’t think they gave the record a real chance. To me, ”Roots” is a very heavy record. I think some of the stuff like ”Straighthate”, ”Spit”, ”Ambush” and ”Endangered Species” was so frickin’ heavy and it’s fast and it’s brutal … I understand some of the old-school metalheads. They just want ”Arise”. They want me to play ”Arise” for my whole life. ”Arise” is great, but there’s different stuff you can do. ”Roots” is great. I wouldn’t change it for anything. It was the record we wanted to make at that time.” Max Cavalera

Vahvat Korn-vaikutteet ”Roots”-levyllä eivät olleet kaikkien mieleen edes artistimaailmassa. Muun muassa juuri Kornin laulaja Johnathan Davies on sanonut vuonna 2016 Metal Hammerin haastattelussa olleensa kielteisesti yllättynyt ”Roots”-albumista.
