Sosiaalisen median aikakautena moni kokee, että bändeistä on kadonnut tietty mystiikka kaiken ollessa läsnä 24/7 Instagramin, Facebookin ja YouTuben kautta. Bändien jäsenet kommunikoivat omilla nimillään fanien kanssa ja postailevat kuvia itsestään terasseilla ja supermarketeissa kuin ihan ketkä tahansa. Siinä on sekä hyvät että huonot puolensa, ja monen mielestä juuri tuo mystiikan puute on selvä miinus.

Edelleen kuitenkin Ghostin ja Slipknotin kaltaiset maskiyhtyeet, joilla on oma vahva imagonsa ja mytologiansa, pitävät yllä omaa teatteriaan siitäkin huolimatta, että jäsenten henkilöllisyydet ovat tiedossa ja paikoitellen rumiakin yksityiskohtia kulissien takaa on saatavilla laajasti. Maskibändeillä on edelleen valtava vetovoima ja ne herättävät suuresti mielenkiintoa ihmisissä.

Uusi tulokas mysteeribändien maailmaan on Supreme Unbeing, joka näyttäytyy yleisölle piirroshahmojen kautta. Elämän ja olevaisuuden filosofiaa pohtivaa orkesteria johtaa profeetta Zac Red, ja bändi vakuutti EMP Label Groupin musiikillaan ja tarinallaan. Supreme Unbeing ei kuitenkaan esitä raskasta metallia Slipknotin tavoin tai okkultista ABBA-metallia Ghostin tyyliin, vaan se luottaa vanhan liiton heavy metaliin. Bändi julkaisi juuri debyyttialbuminsa ”Enter Reality”, jolla se esittelee musiikillisen manifestinsa.

Levyn avauskappale ”You’ll Never Make It” iskee pöytään Metallicaa ja Avenged Sevenfoldia hönkiviä riffejä, kun taas ”Animals” jyrää eteenpäin Megadethin voimalla. Tämä kappalekaksikko on hyvä osoitus bändin terävästä sävelkynästä, joka onnistuu kokoamaan heavy metalia, joka ei kuulosta kornilta ja kaavoihin kangistuvalta siitäkin huolimatta, että se liikkuu varsin tutuissa raameissa. Erityisesti ensimmäiseksi mainittu kappale kohoaa levyn kohokohdaksi esimerkkinä hyvästä sävellystyöstä.

Modernimmat vaikutteet tulevat esille kappaleissa, kuten ”Solution” sekä ”Become”. Ensiksi mainitussa kuulee hieman jopa Behemothiin viittaavaa repaleista riitasointuisuutta, mutta se vaihtuu lennosta johonkin Five Finger Death Punchin ja Triviumin välimaastoon. Jälkimmäinen puolestaan yllättää täysin puskista tulevalla djent-tyylisellä riffittelyllä ja matalavireisyydellä, jota ei levyllä juuri kuulla sen ulkopuolella.  Molemmat ovat sävellyksinä toimivia ja osoittavat myös sen, ettei Supreme Unbeing ole lukinnut itseään liian tiukasti vain yhteen tyyliin ja lokeroon, vaan osaa hyödyntää vaikutteita laidasta laitaan.

Yksi musiikillinen yhtymäkohta tuntuu myös olevan kotimainen Lordi, sillä Supreme Unbeingin esittämä metalli on kotimaisen hirviöbändin modernin tuotannon tapaan flirttailua 80-luvun kanssa 90-luvun raskaudella ja ripauksella tarkoin valittuja moderneja elementtejä.

”Enter Reality” on kokonaisuudessaan keskivertoa huomattavasti parempi heavy metal -albumi, joka ei kompastele lainoihinsa ja vaikutteihinsa liiaksi. Mukana on riittävästi omaa niin, että riffit eivät tunnu kömpelöiltä Metallica– ja Megadeth-pastisseilta, vaan selkeästi omilta. Levyä latistaa paikoitellen solisti Zac Redin tulkinta, joka toisinaan kuulostaa hieman siltä, ettei mukana ole ihan sellaista paloa ja voimaa mitä tämän tyylinen heavy metal kaipaisi. Tästä huolimatta ”Enter Reality” on onnistunut debyyttialbumi. Nähtäväksi jää, onnistuuko Supreme Unbeing herättämään laajemman yleisön huomion tarinallaan ja musiikillaan.

In the age of social media, many feel that a certain mystique about bands has disappeared with everything present 24/7 via Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Band members communicate with fans in their own names and post pictures of themselves on terraces and supermarkets like just about anyone. It has both pros and cons, and many think that lack of mysticism is a clear minus.

Still, however, mask bands like Ghost and Slipknot, which have their own strong image and mythology, maintain their own theater despite the fact that the identities of the members are known and in some places even the ugly details behind the scenes are widely available. Mask bands still have a huge appeal and they are of great interest to people.

A newcomer to the world of mystery bands is Supreme Unbeing, which appears to the public through cartoon characters. The orchestra, which reflects on the philosophy of life and being, is led by the Prophet Zac Red, and the band convinced EMP Label Group with their music and story. However, Supreme Unbeing does not present heavy metal like Slipknot or occult ABBA metal in Ghost style, but relies on old alliance heavy metal. The band has just released their debut album “Enter Reality” with which they present their musical manifesto.

The album’s opening track “You’ll Never Make It” hits the table with Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold rumbling riffs, while “Animals” rolls forward with the power of Megadeth. This two-piece is a good indication of the band’s sharp tuning pen, which manages to assemble heavy metal that doesn’t sound like corns and stiffening to formulas, despite moving within fairly familiar frames. In particular, the first-mentioned song rises to the highlight of the album as an example of good composing work.

More modern influences appear in songs like “Solution” and “Become”. The former even hears a bit of a tattered controversy alluding to the Behemoth, but it changes from a flight to one of the midfield between the Five Finger Death Punch and the Trivium. The latter, on the other hand, is completely surprising with its djent-style riffing coming from the bush and the low-pitchedness that is barely heard on the record outside of it. Both function as compositions and also show that Supreme Unbeing has not locked himself too tightly in just one style and compartment, but is able to harness influences from side to side.

One musical confluence also seems to be the domestic Lord, as the metal performed by Supreme Unbeing, like the modern production of a domestic monster band, is flirting with the 80s with 90s of pregnancy and a touch of carefully selected modern elements.

“Enter Reality” as a whole is a much better-than-average heavy metal album that doesn’t stumble upon its loans and influences too much. There’s enough of your own so that the riffs don’t feel like clumsy Metallica and Megadeth pastises, but clearly your own. In some places, the album is flattened by the interpretation of soloist Zac Red, which sometimes sounds a bit like there isn’t quite the kind of fire and power that this style of heavy metal would need. Despite this, “Enter Reality” is a successful debut album. It remains to be seen whether Supreme Unbeing will succeed in attracting the attention of the wider audience with its story and music.
