Corey Taylor muistelee edesmennyttä Eddie Van Halenia: ”Hän inspiroi musiikkoja 40 vuoden ajalta”

Slipknot– ja Stone Sour -vokalisti Corey Taylor keskusteli hiljattain Chris Jerichon kanssa Talk Is Jericho -podcastissa Eddie Van Halenin vaikutusvallasta rock-musiikin kenttään. ”Hän oli uskomaton muusikko” Taylor totesi, ”ja esikuva nuorille rokkareille”. Van Halenin läpi vuosien ylistetty kitaristi kuoli lokakuun 6. päivä Kaliforniassa 65-vuotiaana; Eddie Van Halenin poika ja Van Halenin basisti Wolfgang Van Halen vahvisti myöhemmin isänsä kuolleen syöpään. ”He was incredible. The influence that he had on not only modern shredders, but the ’80s rock bands, the ’90s rock bands. He influenced 40 years of musicianship. Name another person who’s still alive, really, who’s had that kind of impact, man.

The sad thing is that it happened on my anniversary. Me and Alicia, we’re getting dudded up and getting all ready, and then all of a sudden, we get the news. And everybody was hitting me up. So I immediately reached out to all the people I knew who knew Eddie. ’Cause I’d never met him. But obviously, his music touched all of us.”

Taylor mainitsi myös Van Halenin olleen ensimmäinen ”oikeaa bile-atmöstä” keikoilleen tuonut rock-yhtye. Useat muusikot, mukaanlukien Black Sabbathin räävittömästä sekoilustaan tunnetut jäsenet ovat kitaristia muistellessaan jakaneet tarinoitaan juhlinnasta Van Halenin kiertueilla. MTV:n vuonna 1984 lanseeraama ”Lost Weekend” -dokumentti kuvasi 20-vuotiaan varastotyöntekijä Kurt Jefferisin viinan ja huumeiden huuruista viikonloppua yhtyeen mukana tämän voitettua mahdollisuuden päästä juhlimaan uransa lakipisteessä olevan Van Halenin kanssa. ”I remember seeing video from the ’1984’ tour, and it looked so rad that you wanted to be there, as a dude. And then every ’80s band tried to take that, and it just never seemed genuine. It looked fun, but it never seemed as genuine or as dangerous — that good dangerous. You look at ’Mean Street’, and you look at ’Panama’ — there was just something there that just created this total party atmosphere, that it was just, like, you can either get high, loaded or laid at that party.”

Taylor kertoi myös olleensa liikuttunut nähdessään Eddie Van Halenin osakseen saamaa ylistystä tämän kuoleman jälkeisinä viikkoina:

”I’m sure he got it in his lifetime, but seeing all the people come out from every genre — everybody from Morello to Mayer — I mean, everyone has an Eddie Van Halen story, man. What Pete Townshend said about him really blew my mind. He said Eddie was such an amazing musician, and not only that, but just such a great person. He was, like, ’I could have seen him being president someday.’ I was, like, ’Holy shit!’ Coming from Townshend? It’s rad, the level of respect.”
