Costa Ricasta ponnistava Corpse Garden yhdistelee death metalliinsa teknisiä elementtejä, tunnelmallisuutta ja brutaaliutta varsin mielenkiintoisella tavalla. Vielä suurelle maailmalle melko tuntematon yhtye on piakkoin julkaisemassa toisen täyspitkän albuminsa ”Entheogen”. Kaaoszine haastatteli yhtyeen kitaristi Federico Gutierrezia sähköpostin välityksellä kyselläkseen lisää yhtyeen tämän hetken kuulumisista.

Voitko aluksi esitellä meille yhtyeenne kertomalla lyhyesti biografianne sekä edustamanne musiikkityylin?

Corpse Garden on death metal -yhtye Costa Ricasta, Keski-Amerikasta. Yhtye on perustettu vuonna 2008, ja olemme tähän mennessä nauhoittaneet kaksi albumia. Debyyttimme ”Burnt by the Light” julkaistiin vuonna 2012, ja nauhoitimme juuri uuden albumimme ”Entheogen”, joka julkaistaan venäläisen Satanath Recordsin kautta.

Olette tosiaan juuri nauhoittaneet uuden albuminne ”Ecdysis”. Voitko kertoa hieman lisää tästä albumista? Koska se julkaistaan ja kuinka vertailisit sitä aiempaan materiaaliinne?

Me itse asiassa vaihdoimme albumin nimen, ja uusi nimi on ”Entheogen”. Eräs toinen yhtye julkaisi ”Ecdysis”-nimisen albumin viime vuonna, joten ajattelimme, että on parempi vaihtaa nimi vielä, kun siihen on mahdollisuus. Albumi julkaistaan muutaman kuukauden sisään Satanath Recordsin kautta.

”Entheogen” on hyvin erilainen verrattuna debyyttiimme. Uskoisin, että ensimmäistä levyä tehdessämme emme oikein tienneet, mitä siltä musiikillisesti halusimme. Olimme enemmänkin innostuneita studioon menemisestä ja yritimme soittaa vähän, mitä mieleen tulee. Tästä uudesta albumistamme halusimme tehdä jotain erityistä. Halusimme tehdä omaa musiikkiamme, omilla ehdoillamme ja omalla tyylillämme tai ainakin yrittää kehittää sellaisen. Joten sanoisin, että uusi albumimme on kypsyneempi ja musiikkimme erilaista, koska keskityimme enemmän tekemiseemme. Tyyliltään albumi on jonkin sortin tunnelmallista/ psykedeelistä vanhan liiton death metallia, jossa olemme niin sanotusti yrittäneet heittäytyä pois omalta mukavuusalueeltamme.

Mitkä yhtyeet ovat suurimpia vaikuttajianne? Kuunteletteko laisinkaan musiikkia metallin ulkopuolelta?

Niitä on niin monia, että listasta tulisi loputon! Mutta muutamia ensimmäiseksi mieleen tulevia ovat Morbid Angel, Neurosis, Suffocation, Obituary, Deathspell Omega, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd…  Tajusithan!

Mistä ammennatte inspiraation musiikkiinne?

Kaikesta, mikä kumpuaa sieluistamme ulos. Haluan uskoa, että musiikki on eräänlainen katarsis, joten mitä tahansa tunnetkin, se vaikuttaa musiikkiisi tietoisesti tai tiedostamatta. Näistä tunnetiloista yritämme rakentaa musiikkiamme.

Miten kuvailisit musiikkianne käyttämättä tyypillisiä termejä, kuten ”metalli”. Toisin sanottuna, kuinka kuvailisit musiikkianne henkilölle, joka ei ole koskaan kuullutkaan metallimusiikkia?

Raskasta, syvällistä ja tunnelmallista musiikkia.

Mitä voit kertoa meille yhtyeenne sanoituksista? Mistä aiheista sanoituksenne yleensä kertovat? Kuinka tärkeä osa musiikkianne sanoitukset ovat?

No, sanoitukset sitovat itse asiassa kaiken yhteen. Ne ovat mahdollisuutemme sanoa, mitä haluamme, ja täydennämme sitä sanomaa musiikilla. Joten sanoitukset ovat todellakin tärkeitä meille!

Uuden albumin lyriikat kertovat okkultismista, alkemiasta ja näiden liittymisestä ihmisen sielunelämään. Pyrimme valistamaan kaikkia, jotka lukevat sanoituksiamme ja kuuntelevat musiikkiamme.

Tulette maasta, joka ei ole kovinkaan tunnettu metallimusiikistaan. Mitä yhtyeitä voisit suositella meille Costa Ricasta?

Olemme tietoisia siitä, etteivät ihmiset Keski-Amerikassa ole niin mieltyneitä metallimusiikkiin kuin kenties muualla maailmassa, mutta on oikeastaan huvittavaa nähdä, kuinka paljon mahtavia yhtyeitä täältä tulee! Erityisesti Costa Ricasta tulee useita yhtyeitä, esimerkiksi Nostoc, Insepulto, Paganus Doctrina, Advent Of Bedlam, Grecco, Heresy, Prockq, Inhuman, Alastor S.E., Morbid Funeral ja Time’s Forgotten.

Kuinka vaikeaa (tai helppoa) on soittaa metallimusiikkia maassa, jossa se ei ole kovinkaan suosittua?

Ei se helppoa ole! Kun sekä ihmisten että hallituksen asenne on se, ettei paikallista musiikkia tueta millään tavalla, asiat menevät vaikeaksi. Erityisesti kun ajattelee, että olemme kuitenkin kolmannen maailman valtio eikä musiikin soittamisesta makseta yhtään mitään. Totta kai myymme joitakin paitoja ja levyjä, mutta eipä niistä paljon tuloja saa. Kiertueelle lähteminen on hyvin vaikeaa, koska täällä ei ole mitään infrastruktuuria tai ihmisiä, jotka olisivat valmiita luottamaan sinuun ja ottamaan riskin… Joten on kovin vaikeaa rakentaa mainetta ja saada maailma huomaamaan, että meillä on yhtyeitä täällä. Kaikki täytyy maksaa omasta taskusta, Costa Ricassa jokainen yhtye on itsenäinen.

Mutta kaikki se kova työ, jota yhtyeet joutuvat täällä tekemään, on myös opettavaista: Kovaa työtä seuraa loistava musiikki ja uskon, että meidän täytyy vain pienin askelin jaksaa jatkaa eteenpäin, muuttaa ihmisten asenteita hyvällä musiikilla ja kovalla työllä. Ehkä jonain päivänä meillä vielä on vahva ja kannustava metalliskene niin Costa-Ricassa kuin ylipäätänsä koko Keski-Amerikassa.

Kuinka paljon tiedät suomalaisesta metallimusiikista? Mitä yhtyeitä tiedät ja mistä pidät?

Hyvin paljon, tietenkin. Teillä on siellä suurin piirtein kaikki yhtyeet, joita pitää kuunnella, kun aloittaa metallin kuuntelun. Yhtyeet, kuten Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Stratovarius, Ensiferum ja raskaammalta osastolta Stone, Sentenced, Children Of Bodom, Sinergy, Norther, Naildown, Vorum, Swallowed, Impaled Nazarene, Demigod, Archgoat, Demilich ja Behexen. Suomi on yksi metalliyhtyeiden tekokone!

Mikä on mielestäsi suurin syy siihen, miksi Corpse Gardenin pitäisi olla metallimusiikin seuraava suuri yhtye? Mikä on suurin myyntivalttinne?

En oikein tiedä, kuinka vastata tähän. En halua kuulostaa pröystäilevältä runkkarilta enkä usko, että musiikkia ylipäätänsä voi ”myydä”. Tai onko Corpse Gardenilla ylipäätänsä mitään isoa syytä, miksi ihmisten pitäisi kuunnella meitä? Jokainen yhtye on erilainen, eikä kukaan voi sanoa, että meillä on sitä ja tätä. On kuitenkin levymme ostavista ihmisistä kiinni, pitävätkö he sen soundista, musiikista, saavatko he mitään tuntemuksia, uppoaako musiikki heihin vai ei. Me olemme muusikoita, me olemme vain musiikin suoni. Emme me tiedä, mikä meidän suurin myyntivalttimme on. Me vain teemme, mitä teemme, ja yritämme nauttia omasta musiikistamme. Jos musiikkimme miellyttää levymme ostanutta tai ladannutta metallipäätä, niin hienoa! Jos ei, niin eipä sekään haittaa. Ei ole minun mielestäni meidän tehtävämme kertoa, että meillä on tämänkaltaisia ominaisuuksia ja tämän takia sinun pitäisi kuunnella meitä; annamme mieluummin musiikin itsensä puhua.

Yleisesti puhuen, minkä luulet olevan seuraava iso asia metallimusiikissa?

Musiikki on varmasti muuttumassa, kuten myös musiikkiteollisuus ja metalli. Olen havainnut hiukan fanien tylsistymistä, koska lähes jokainen metallijulkaisu käyttää nykypäivänä samaa vanhaa kaavaa kenties miellyttääkseen mediaa tai tullakseen teollisuuden tuotteeksi. Mutta ihmiset ovat alkaneet huomata, että näin ei voi jatkua, ja siksi he ovat alkaneet kääntää selkäänsä valtavirtamusiikille ja kaivautua syvemmälle undergroundin puolelle etsiäkseen jotain uutta. Jotain, joka todella pitää heidän sielunsa hengissä ja luo sen kipinän, jonka he ovat aikoinaan tunteneet aloittaessaan metallin kuuntelun ja joka on sittemmin jotenkin kadonnut. En tiedä, mihin metallimusiikki on menossa, mutta tiedän, että mielenkiintoisia muutoksia se tulee kokemaan.

Missä luulet ja toivot Corpse Gardenin olevan kymmenen vuoden päästä?

Toivon mukaan teemme silloin edelleen hyvää musiikkia ja yritämme yhä uudistua ja tehdä erilaisia asioita jatkuvasti.

Mitkä ovat Corpse Gardenin lähitulevaisuuden suunnitelmat?

Tällä hetkellä keskitymme vain saamaan uudelle albumillemme asianmukaisen julkaisun ja yritämme levittää musiikkiamme mahdollisimman laajalle, voimavarojemme puitteissa, siinäpä oikeastaan kaikki!

Corpse Garden hailing from Costa Rica are mixing technical elements, atmosphere and brutality in their death metal at pretty interesting way. The band is still quite unknown for the big world out there is soon to release their second full-length album “Entheogen”. Kaaoszine contacted the guitarist of the band, Federico Gutierrez, via e-mail to ask a little bit more how things are going with the band at the moment.

First of all, could you give our readers an introduction of Corpse Garden by telling a short biography and the style of music you are playing?

We are a death metal band from Costa Rica, Central America. The band was formed in 2008, we have recorded two albums so far: ‘Burnt by the Light’ released on 2012 and we just recorded our upcoming album ‘Entheogen’ and its gonna be released through Satanath Records from Russia.

You have just recorded your second album “Ecdysis”. What can you tell us about this album? When it comes out and how would you compare it to your previous material?

Actually, we changed the title to “Entheogen”, so it’s not gonna be “Ecdysis” anymore. Another band released a record last year under the same name so, we reckon it would be best to change the title of the album while we still could. The album is coming out in the next few months through Satanath Records.

“Entheogen” is very very different from our previous record. I think that when you do your first one you don’t really know what you want in terms of music, you’re just excited to enter the studio and record and try to play whatever comes to your mind. For this one we really strive for something specific, we wanted to do our own music, in our own terms and our own style or at least try to develop one, so, I would have to say that this album is more mature, the music is different because we focused more on doing, sort of, atmospheric/ psychedelic old school death metal trying to throw ourselves out of our comfort zone so to speak.

Which bands are biggest influences for Corpse Garden? Is there any music outside of metal you like to listen?

There are so many metal and non-metal influences, the list would be enormous!  But the few that come to my mind would be Morbid Angel, Neurosis, Suffocation, Obituary, Deathspell Omega, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd…..you get the picture!

From where do you draw inspiration for creating music?

Whatever comes out from our soul, you know what I mean?  I’d like to think that music is a sort of catharsis, so you will always reflect in your work whatever you are feeling in that moment, consciously or unconsciously. So we pick up from there and try to construct our music.

How would you describe your music without using basic words like “metal”. In other words, how would you describe your music for a person who has never heard metal music before?

Heavy, profound and atmospheric music.

What can you tell us about the lyrics of Corpse Garden? Which subjects are they basically about? How important part the lyrics are for Corpse Garden?

Well, the lyrics tie up everything, really. They are a direct way to say what we want to say and to complement that, we’ve got the music supporting it. So they’re very important, yes!

On this new record we talk about the occult, about alchemy and we relate that with the human psyche. We hope to induce enlightenment to whoever is reading our lyrics and listening to our music.

You are hailing from a country, which is not so familiar of metal music. Which bands you can recommend for us from Costa Rica?

Yeah, we are aware that in Central America people don’t fancy metal music as much as other regions throughout the world but it’s funny to see that there are many great bands from Central America!

Particularly, in Costa Rica there are many bands: Nostoc, Insepulto, Paganus Doctrina, Advent Of Bedlam, Grecco, Heresy, Prockq, Inhuman, Alastor S.E., Morbid Funeral and Time’s Forgotten.

How hard (or easy) it is to play metal music in a country where metal music isn’t such a huge thing?

It’s not easy I can tell you that! When you get a ‘not supporting any type of local music’ attitude from the people or the government, things get hard. Particularly if you put into context that we are a third world country and that music does not pay off, like, at all. Sure, we may sell some shirts and some CDs, but it’s not like a massive income. It’s really hard to go touring, there is no infrastructure to do it or people willing to trust you and take a risk…. so to let the world notice that there are bands in here, to build up a reputation, it’s hard. We need to pay off everything from our own pocket, in Costa Rica every single band is an independent band.

But from all of this hard times that bands have to put up in here, this builds discipline and from it: hard work , and from it great music and I think that we need to take baby steps and to keep pushing further and further, changing people’s minds with good music and hard work and, who knows?  Maybe someday we will have a strong and supportive metal scene in Costa Rica and Central America as well.

How familiar you are with Finnish metal music? Which bands do you know and like from our country?

Very familiar, yeah. You guys got like every single band you have to listen to when you start off in metal. Bands like Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Stratovarious, Ensiferum and going more extreme you’ve got Stone, Sentenced, Children Of Bodom, Sinergy, Norther, Naildown, Vorum, Swallowed, Impaled Nazarene, Demigod, Archgoat, Demilich and Behexen. You guys are metal band-making machine!

What do you think is the biggest reason why Corpse Garden should be the next big thing in metal? What is your biggest selling point?

I don’t really know how to answer this. I don’t want to come up as a pretentious jerk, I don’t think that music is something that you can ‘sell’, you know? Or if Corpse Garden’s got a big reason why you should listen to us? Every band is different no matter what and one cannot say that we’ve got this or that. It’s up to the person who goes and buys an album and decides if they like the sound, the music, if they feel anything at all, if they wrap around the music or not.  We are musicians, we are just a vessel for the music, we don’t know what our biggest ‘selling’ point is. We just do what we do and try to enjoy our own music. If the metalhead that buys or downloads our album fancy our music, great! If they don’t, that’s cool too. I don’t think it’s up to us to say that we have this set of qualities and that is why you should listen to us,  we rather let the music speak for itself.

What do you think will be the next big thing in metal generally speaking?

Music is definitely changing as well as the industry of music and metal. I do notice some boredom around fans or metalheads, like almost every release in metal ends up using this same used formula to satisfy the media or to become a product of the industry, I suppose. But people are beginning to cope with the fact that this cannot go on, so they are beginning to turn their backs to the mainstream and dig in the underground to look for something new. For something that truly nurtures their souls and creates this spark that they felt the first time they started listening to metal that somehow got lost. I don’t know where metal is going, but I know that it’s going to suffer some interesting changes.

Where do you see and hope Corpse Garden will be after 10 years?

Hopefully we are still making good music, trying to innovate and do something different every time.

Which are the main plans of Corpse Garden for the near future?

Right now we want to focus on giving a proper exposure to the new album, trying to get the music as far as we can with our resources. So yeah, that would be it!
