Ian Paice: ”’Whoosh!’ ei välttämättä jää Deep Purplen viimeiseksi levyksi”

Englantilainen rockin legenda Deep Purple julkaisi vastikään uuden albumin nimeltä ”Whoosh!”, joka nousi Suomessakin nopeasti albumilistan kärkeen. ”Whoosh!” oli jo kolmas perättäinen levy, joka toteutettiin yhteistyössä tuottaja Bob Ezrinin kanssa. Yhtyeen ainoa alkuperäisjäsen ja rumpali Ian Paice kertoo UCR:n haastattelussa, että kun bändi alkoi tehdä yhteistyötä Ezrinin kanssa, tuli äänittämisestä jälleen hauskaa. Hän kertoo, että melkein 20 vuoden ajan studioon meno oli pelkkää puurtamista. Sitten tuli Ezrin, joka oli nopea ja tehokas, ja hauskuus palasi studioon.

Ian Paice kertoi hiljattain tanskalaisen Redaktions Netzwerkin haastattelussa, että albumilta löytyvä uusi versio ”And The Address” -kappaleesta oli hänelle haastava. Rumpalilla oli mielessään niin vahvasti alkuperäinen versio, että oli vaikea päivittää sitä johonkin uuteen. Paice olikin ainoana nykyisestä kokoonpanosta mukana myös vuonna 1968 julkaistulla ”Shades Of Deep Purple” -albumilla, josta biisin alkuperäisversio löytyy. Paice myöntää ettei ole varma, onko tämä versio alkuperäistä parempi, mutta ainakin se on erilainen.

Myös kappaleen uusi versiointi oli Bob Ezrinin idea. Ajatuksena oli aloittaa tämä Deep Purplen oletettavasti ”viimeinen tuleminen” samalla kappaleella, jolla debyyttialbumi alkoi. Kuitenkin koronapandemia toi tullessaan mahdollisuuden myös seuraavasta luvusta bändin aikajanalle. Koska yhtye ei voi monien muidenkaan bändien tapaan juuri nyt keikkailla, vihjailee Paice, että heillä on nyt runsaasti luppoaikaa esimerkiksi kirjoittaa uutta musiikkia ja tehdä mahdollisesti vielä (ainakin) yksi albumi.

”It was probably the most difficult track to do on the record, because I have a template in my head about what it was. With all of the other stuff, it’s totally new music. I have no reference point to it. For the first couple of takes, I was trying to recreate what it was in a slightly more updated fashion. I couldn’t do it.”

”The tempos move around a little bit – like all old recordings. You know, so long as it doesn’t race away, it’s okay! That’s how we solved that problem. Is it better than the original ’And the Address’? I don’t know; I have my doubts. I think it’s different.”

”There was every chance when we went in to start recording the ’Whoosh!’ album that it would probably be the last record. His (Bob Ezrin) idea was to do a musical full circle, to take the first track off the first record and then end it with the last track on what would have been, in our minds, probably the last record.”

”It might not be the last record. We’ve got all of this dead time. We know we can’t do any concerts until sometime next year. Now, 10 or 11 months, is a long time for musicians to sit around doing nothing when they could do something. So, it wouldn’t surprise me – and I know there’s little mutterings going on – that we might get together towards the end of this year and see if we can write some more stuff. If we can, if we’ve got some ideas that we like, then there’s no reason at all why there shouldn’t be another record.”
