Yksi Kroatian piskuisen metalliskenen kansainvälisesti tunnetuimpia yhtyeitä, Infernal Tenebra, on tällä hetkellä nauhoittamassa neljättä täyspitkäänsä. Alun perin black metal -yhtyeenä aloittanut ja sittemmin enemmän elementtejä muista metallin alalajikkeista musiikkiinsa lisännyt yhtye julkaisi edellisen levynsä ”New Formed Revelations” vuoden 2012 lopulla, joten uutta albumia onkin jo tovi odoteltu. Kaaoszine otti yhteyden yhtyeen vokalisti-kitaristi Darko Etingeriin sähköpostitse ja kyseli lisää yhtyeen kuulumisia levynauhoitusten keskellä.

Voisitko alkuun esitellä yhtyeenne lukijoillemme kertomalla lyhyen biografian ja soittamanne musiikkityylin?

Infernal Tenebra on extreme metal-yhtye Kroatiasta, ja sillä on levytyssopimus Massacre Recordsin kanssa. Viimeisin albumimme ”New Formed Revelations” tuotettiin Fascination Street studiolla Jens Bogrenin (Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Amon Amarth) toimesta. Yhtyeemme on myös esiintynyt samalla lavalla sellaisten isojen metalliyhtyeiden kanssa kuin Behemoth, Gojira, Kreator, Exodus, Blind Guardian ja Hypocrisy sekä maineikkailla metallifestivaaleilla, muun muassa Bloodstock Open Air (UK), Power Prog & Metal Festival (BEL), Trondheim Metalfest (NOR) ja Brutal Assault (CZ). Äskettäin olimme Japanin-kiertueella yhdessä Rotting Christin, Vreidin sekä Havokin kanssa.

Yhtyeen tämänhetkinen kokoonpano on Darko Etinger (laulu, kitara), Ivo Petrović (kitara), Paolo Grižonič (basso) ja Sebastian Stell (rummut). Aloitimme puhtaana black metal -yhtyeenä vuonna 1999, mistä nykyinen soundimme on kehittynyt isolta osin miehistömuutosten takia. Sanotaan, että olemme nykyisin enemmän avoimia ja pyrimme välttämään genrerajoituksia. Meidän näkemyksemme mukaan metallimusiikissa on runsaat mahdollisuudet ilmaisulle ja pyrimmekin yhdistämään eri elementtejä ilmaistaksemme itseämme juuri niin kuin haluamme. Jokainen uusi jäsenemme on tuonut jotain uutta yhtyeeseen, ja siksi mielestämme nykyinen miehistö on tähänastisista vahvin.

Työstätte tällä hetkellä uutta albumianne. Mitä voit kertoa meille albumista tässä vaiheessa? Kuinka vertailisit sitä aiempiin tuotoksiinne?

Uutta albumia todellakin nauhoitetaan juuri tällä hetkellä. Sen miksaus ja masterointi tulee tapahtumaan jälleen kerran Jens Bogrenin toimesta maalis-huhtikuun aikana. Yhtyeenä yritämme nostaa rimaa joka kerta, kun työstämme uutta musiikkia, joten mielestämme uusi albumimme on vahvin tuotoksemme tähän mennessä sekä sanoituksellisesti että musiikillisesti.

Mitkä yhtyeet ovat Infernal Tenebran suurimpia vaikuttajia? Kuunteletteko laisinkaan musiikkia metallin ulkopuolelta?

Useat yhtyeet, esimerkiksi Megadeth, Testament, Death, Carcass sekä kaikki ”yleisesti syytetyt”, ovat vaikuttaneet myös meihin. On niin monia yhtyeitä, joita voisi mainita. Metallin ulkopuolelta nautimme muun muassa jazzista sekä yleisesti ottaen kaikenlaisesta instrumentaalimusiikista.

Mistä ammennatte inspiraation musiikkiinne?

Uskoisin, että ihan itsestämme ja kaikesta, mikä on vaikuttanut meihin näiden vuosien aikana. Kaikkien näiden vuosien jälkeen musiikki vain tulee ulos luonnostaan, aivan kuin tietäisimme etukäteen, onko se hyvä vai ei. Jotkin kappaleet syntyvät helpommin, kun taas toisten kanssa saamme työskennellä tiukemmin ollaksemme tyytyväisiä lopputulokseen. Sama pätee myös sanoituksiimme.

Miten kuvailisit musiikkianne käyttämättä laisinkaan tyypillisiä termejä kuten ”metalli”? Toisin sanottuna, miten kuvailisit musiikkianne henkilölle, joka ei ole kuullut metallimusiikkia aiemmin laisinkaan?

Sanoisin sen olevan äärimmäistä musiikkia, jota on laajennettu melodisin ja progressiivisin aineksin. Uusin albumimme on hyvin erilainen verrattuna aiempiin tuotoksiimme: kypsyneempi ja tarkempi… Syvällisiä sanoituksia, mieleenpainuvia kertosäkeitä ja mahtavia kitarasooloja. Musiikkia, joka ei ainoastaan paljasta soittotaitoa vaan myös sävellystaidon.

Mitä voit kertoa meille Infernal Tenebran sanoituksista? Mistä aiheista sanoituksenne yleensä kertovat ja kuinka tärkeä osa sanoitukset ovat yhtyeellenne?

Pääteema sanoituksissamme on aina ihmisrotu, suhteemme luontoon, yhteiskuntamme tila ja nämä ikuiset ongelmat, joita kohtaamme. Jotkin sanoituksistamme ovat hyvin suoraviivaisia ja rehtejä, toiset taas ilmaistaan tarinoiden ja myyttien läpi. Mielestäni sanoituksemme ja laulutyylimme täydentää musiikkiamme ja luo sille äänimaiseman, joka on erilainen kuin useimmilla muilla death metal -yhtyeillä.

Tulette maasta, joka ei ole kovinkaan tunnettu metallimusiikistaan. Mitä muita yhtyeitä voisit suositella meille Kroatiasta?

Kroatian metalliskene on viimeisinä vuosina avautunut enemmän maailmalle, ja vihdoinkin yhtyeillämme on mahdollisuus esitellä itseään kansainväliselle skenelle. Yhtyeitä, joita suosittelen ehdottomasti ovat Cold Snap, Kryn, War-head sekä tietenkin Kroatian tunnetuin yhtye Ashes You Leave.

Kuinka vaikeaa (tai helppoa) on soittaa metallimusiikkia maassa, jossa sillä ei ole kovinkaan suurta jalansijaa?

Infernal Tenebra on metalliyhtye, joka tulee Kroatiasta, yhdestä maailman viimeisimmistä kolkista, mistä menisit etsimään metalliyhtyettä. Vain hyvin harvat ihmiset ymmärtävät, kuinka vaikea on päästä pinnalle tämänkaltaisesta maasta. Mutta työskentelemme niin kovasti, kuin pystymme saadaksemme musiikkiamme faneillemme kuunneltavaksi. Olemme ylittäneet monia esteitä ja muureja päästäksemme tähän asti, ja sitä kokemusta monilla yhtyeillä ei ole.

Kuinka paljon tiedätte suomalaisesta metallimusiikista? Mistä yhtyeistä pidätte maastamme?

Suomen metalliskene on melko vahva ja teillä on useita tunnettuja yhtyeitä, kuten Children Of Bodom, Stratovarius, Ensiferum, Amorphis, Wintersun, Waltari ja monia muita. Ja osa yhtyeistänne on myös toiminut vaikuttajinamme.

Mikä on mielestäsi suurin syy siihen, miksi Infernal Tenebran pitäisi olla seuraava ”iso” yhtye metallissa? Mikä on suurin myyntivalttinne?

Olisi typerää olla toivomatta parasta itselleen, mutta olemme kuitenkin melko lailla jalat maassa koskien tämänkaltaisia asioita. Mielestäni meillä on kuitenkin tarjota erilaisia sävellyksiä: eeppisiä, hiukan depressiivisiä ja paljon teknisiä sekä progressiivisia elementtejä. Joskus ajattelen asiaan niin, että kun en löydä tämäntyylistä musiikkia muualta, minun täytyy luoda sitä. Jos me onnistumme täyttämään tämän aukon ja fanimme tunnistavat meidät, niin se on hyvä. Päätelleen palautteesta, jota olemme saaneet edellisestä albumistamme, näyttäisi siltä, että jotkut fanit sekä mediat ovat ymmärtäneet ideamme. Nyt tehtävämme on vain työskennellä tämän idean kanssa, kehittää sitä ja tehdä se entistä paremmaksi.

Yleisesti puhuen, minkä uskoisit olevan seuraava ”iso asia” metallimusiikissa?

Useat jo 30 vuotta sitten perustetut yhtyeet ovat yhä aktiivisia metalliskenessä nykypäivänä, ja näkisin sen olevan tavallaan positiivinen asia, mutta myös negatiivinen. Se tekee uudemmille yhtyeille vaikeammaksi päästä parrasvaloihin ja uudempien yhtyeiden pitääkin todistaa olevansa se seuraava ”iso asia”. Se on businessmielessä toki järkevää, mutta artistin näkökulmasta se luo lähinnä vakaan ympäristön, jossa todelliset huiput ovat harvassa. Aika näyttää, mutta metallimusiikki ei tule koskaan kuolemaan ja jotenkin se aina tulee kehittymään.

Missä näet ja toivot Infernal Tenebran olevan 10 vuoden päästä?

Kymmenen vuotta on pitkä aika, emmekä halua katsoa niin pitkälle. Yritämme aina tehdä parhaamme ja sitä kautta hyviä asioita tapahtuu. Olemme tarpeeksi kokeneita tietääksemme, mikä lopulta merkitsee, ja asettaneet asiat elämässämme oikeaan tärkeysjärjestykseen, jotta voimme tehdä omaa juttuamme, niin kuin se meille parhaiten sopii.

Mitkä ovat Infernal Tenebran lähitulevaisuuden suunnitelmat?

Tämä on helppo kysymys. Saada uusi albumi ulos ja kiertue promotaksemme albumia. Sekä nauttia elämästä kovan työn ja kärsimyksen kautta.

One of the most internationally renowned bands from the small metal scene of Croatia, Infernal Tenebra, is currently recording their fourth full length album. The band originally formed as a black metal band and afterwards adding more elements from other styles of metal released their latest album “New Formed Revelations” at the end of 2012, so many have probably waited for this new album to come. Kaaoszine contacted the vocalist/guitarist Darko Etinger via e-mail and asked more how things are going with the band in the middle of recording sessions.

First of all, could you give our readers an introduction of Infernal Tenebra by telling a short biography and the style of music you are playing?

Infernal Tenebra is an extreme metal band from Croatia signed to Massacre Records label. Our latest album “New Formed Revelations” was produced at Fascination Street Studios by Jens Bogren (Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Amon Amarth). The band shared stage with big metal bands like Behemoth, Gojira, Kreator, Exodus, Blind Guardian and Hypocrisy and performed on renown metal festivals like Bloodstock Open Air (UK), Power Prog & Metal Festival (BEL), Trondheim Metalfest (NOR) and Brutal Assault (CZ) among others. Recently the band took part in a Japanese tour with Rotting Christ, Vreid and Havok.

The bands’ current lineup consists of Darko Etinger (vocals, guitars), Ivo Petrović (guitars), Paolo Grižonič (bass) and Sebastian Stell (drums). The bands’ sound is a direct result of a constant evolution taking place since the beginnings in 1999 when the band originated with pure black metal. Lineup changes certainly played a huge role in it. That being said, the band tries to be very open to music, trying to avoid certain genre limitations. Our view is that metal music consists of ample possibilities of expression and we try to incorporate those elements to express ourselves in the way we want and need. Every new member brought something new to the bands’ sound and we feel the current lineup is the strongest to date.

You are currently working with your new album. What can you tell us about this album? When it comes out and how would you compare it to your previous material?

The new album is being recorded as we speak. Mixing and mastering will be done during March/April again by Jens Bogren. As a band we try to raise the bar every time we write new music, so we feel this album is our strongest effort so far, both lyrically and musically.

Which bands are biggest influences for Infernal Tenebra? Is there any music outside of metal you like to listen?

There are a lot of bands that made an impact on us like Megadeth, Testament, Death, Carcass and all the “usual suspects”. Just too many to mention. Outside of the metal genre we also like jazz and all kind of instrumental music in general.

From where do you draw inspiration for creating music?

From ourselves I think, and all that influenced us over the years. After all these years it just comes out naturally. It’s like, we already know if it’s good or not. Some songs come out easily, some of them we work hard on until we’re satisfied with the result. Same thing about the lyrics.

How would you describe your music without using basic words like “metal”. In other words, you would you describe your music for a person who has never heard metal music before?

I’d say it’s extreme music, expanded with melodic, progressive elements. The new album is very different from our previous albums. More mature, more focused…. thoughtful lyrics, memorable choruses and great guitar solos.  A music piece not showing only musical skills, but also compositions.

What can you tell us about the lyrics of Infernal Tenebra? Which subjects are they basically about? How important part lyrics are for Infernal Tenebra?

The main theme is always about human race, our relationship with nature, about the state of our society and everlasting problems we face. Some lyrics are more direct, very sincere. Others are expressed through stories, myths etc. I think our lyrics and the way of vocalizing complement our music and create a sonic landscape rather different than other death metal bands.

You are hailing from country, which is not so familiar of metal music. Which bands you can recommend for us from Croatia?

The Croatian metal scene opened to the world in the last few years and bands finally have the opportunity to present themselves to the global metal scene. I definitely recommend Cold Snap, Kryn, War-head and of course, Croatia’s most established band Ashes You Leave.

How hard (or easy) it is to play metal music in a country where metal music isn’t such a huge thing?

Infernal Tenebra is a metal band coming from Croatia, one of the last places on Earth you would go search for a metal band. Very few people are aware of what it takes to make it from a country like that. But we’re here working as hard as we can to bring out our music to the fans. We passed many obstacles and walls to get here and it’s an experience not many bands have.

How familiar you are with Finnish metal music? Which bands do you know and like from our country?

Well, the Finnish scene is pretty strong and have a lot of established bands like Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Ensiferum, Amorphis, Wintersun, Waltari and many more, and some of them were also our influences.

What do you think is the biggest reason why Infernal Tenebra should be the next big thing in metal? What is your biggest selling point?

It would be stupid not to wish the best for ourselves, although we’re pretty down to earth regarding terms like ”the next big thing”. I think we bring to the table a different kind of compositions, epic, slithly depressive with a lot of technical and prog elements. Sometimes I think of it like: I can’t find this type of music that I like, so I’m gonna create it. If we manage to fill this gap, and fans recognize it, we’ll do well. It seems certain fans and media understood our concept by the feedback that we got for our previous album. It’s up to us to work on this concept and develop it, make it great.

What do you think will be the next big thing in metal generally speaking?

Well, a lot of bands that existed 30 years ago are still active on the metal scene today, and this is a positive thing in a way, but also negative, because new bands can’t get the spotlight they need to establish themselves as the next big thing. From the business point of view, it makes sense, but from the artistic perspective, it produces a steady environment, with only sporadic blasts. Time will tell, but metal music will never die and it will always evolve somehow.

Where do you see and hope Infernal Tenebra will be after 10 years?

Ten years is a long time and we don’t like to look so far ahead. We will always try to do our best in every way and good things will happen for sure. We’re mature enough to know what matters, have priorities in our life and balance our efforts in a way that lets us do our thing in the best way for us.

Which are the main plans of Infernal Tenebra for the near future?

That’s an easy one, get the new album out, tour to promote it. Enjoy life through hard work and suffering.
