JD Millerin Peter Halldén ja Chris David tyrmäävät Dion hologrammikiertueen

(English text below to Finnish text) Ruotsalainen melodista rockia soittava yhtye JD Miller julkaisi tänä keväänä toisen albuminsa ”World War X:n.” Kaaoszine pääsi jututtamaan yhtyeen vokalisti Peter Halldénia ja basisti Chris Davidia. Herrat kertoivat haastattelussa kuinka uusin levy eroaa debyytistä, ja millainen livebändi JD Miller oikein on. Haastateltavat kertoivat myös mielipiteensä Dion hologrammiesityksistä ja siitä, millaisessa muodossa musiikkinsa ostavat.

Moro! Miten JD Millerin vuosi on tähän mennessä sujunut?

Peter: Vuosi on ollut todella hyvä meille. Julkaisimme ”World War X:n” huhtikuussa, olemme saaneet hyviä arvosteluja ja soittaneet paljon keikkoja. Meillä on ollut sellaista tekemistä, mitä rock-yhtyeellä kuuluukin olla. Vuosi on ollut hektinen, mutta hyvä.

Chris: Teimme myös ensimmäisen ulkomaan keikkamme Suomessa Utajärvellä Untorockissa kesäkuussa.

”World War X” julkaistiin huhtikuussa kuten sanoitte. Millaisen vastaanoton levy sai?

Peter: Albumi on saanut pääasiassa myönteisiä arvosteluja ja ainoastaan yhden tai kaksi huonoa. Myös iso Sweden Rock Magazine antoi levyllemme hyvän arvion.

Chris: Pisteytykset olivat monesti 7-8/10, joten albumi on saanut hyvin pisteitä. Aivan kuten sinunkin arviossasi.

Kuuntelin debyyttialbuminne pari päivää sitten, ja huomasin, että olette kehittyneet yhtyeenä. Kuinka koette uuden albumin poikkeavan ensimmäisestä julkaisustanne?

Peter: Meistäkin olemme kehittyneet yhtyeenä, ja on hienoa, että olet huomannut saman. Meillä on ollut muutoksia yhtyeessämme, ja uusin albumi on tehty pääasiassa minun ja rumpalimme Emilin vetovastuulla. Emil tekee suurimman osan musiikistamme. Halusimme viedä uudemman albumin enemmän metalin suuntaan, kun debyytti on enemmän rockia. Vastaavasti ”World War X” on progressiivisempaa ja melodisempaa metalia. Myös yhtyeen uudet jäsenet ovat vaikuttaneet albumiin, ja tehneet siitä sellaisen kuin se on. Erotuksena on vielä se, että ”World War X:lla” on yhtenäisempi kokonaisuus. Ensimmäinen levy tehtiin yhtyeen jäsenten kesken, mutta tällä kertaa rumpali Emil teki ”pohjat”, joten levy on sen takia yhtenäisempi.

Kuten mainitsitte, olette keikkailleet tänä vuonna jo paljon. Millainen livebändi JD Miller oikein on?

Peter: Erittäin, erittäin, erittäin energinen. Olemme pohjimmiltamme live-yhtye ja kuulostamme keikoilla hyvältä. Me emme mene sieltä mistä aita on matalin, vaan annamme kaikkemme, ja yritämme aina saada hyvän shown aikaan. Toki käytämme taustanauhoja ja vastaavaa keikoilla, mutta kun on meidän kokoisemme yhtye, ei ole mahdollista kuljettaa orkesteria mukana. Uudella levyllä on paljon orkesteriosuuksia, ja ainoa tapa, joilla voimme toteuttaa koko musiikillisen visiomme, ovat taustanauhat.

Valitettavasti en päässyt todistamaan Utajärven keikkaanne, mutta osaatteko sanoa milloin JD Miller esiintyy seuraavan kerran Suomessa?

Chris: Emme pysty lupaamaan vielä mitään. Meillä on seuraava keikka Amaranthen kanssa syyskuun alussa Hagforsissa, ja olemme suunnitelleet kiertuetta Eurooppaan keväälle. Kevään kiertue on kuitenkin vasta kehitteillä, joten emme voi luvata, että Suomi olisi osa sitä.

Teettekö kappalelistan ennen keikkaa vai soitatteko kappaleita spontaanisti?

Peter: Meillä on valmis settilista, jota yleensä muutamme vähän. Joillakin keikoilla soitamme enemmän ja joillakin vähemmän kappaleita. On kuitenkin tärkeää miettiä, mitkä kappaleet toimivat tietyssä järjestyksessä, joten sen takia soitamme aina tiettyjä kappaleita. Tällaiseen rakenteeseen on toki helppo lisätä muitakin kappaleita.

Keikkailusta puheen ollen, oletteko kuulleet Ronnie James Dio -hologrammiesityksistä? Mitä mieltä olette tällaisesta kiertueesta?

Chris: Olen kuullut, enkä ole sen idean suuri fani. Mielestäni heidän pitäisi antaa hänen levätä rauhassa. Vaikka rakastankin Dion musiikkia, en ostaisi hologrammishown lippua ja menisi sinne.

Peter: Minäkään en pidä hologrammi-ajatuksesta enkä menisi katsomaan konserttia.

Musiikin suoratoistopalvelut hallitsevat musiikkimarkkinoita, vaikka vinyylit ovat tehneet hyvän paluun. Ostatteko te musiikkinne CD:nä, vinyyleinä, vai käytättekö suoratoistopalveluja?

Chris: Ostin viime viikolla vinyylin ja ostan niitä silloin tällöin, mutta kuuntelen yleensä suoratoistopalveluja.

Peter: Minäkin ostan yleensä vinyylejä, etenkin silloin kuin todella haluan albumin. Ostan fyysisiä tuotteita, koska haluan tukea artistia, mutta myös sen takia, että pääsen käsiksi albumin taiteeseen. Fyysistä albumia arvostaa eri tavalla kuin pelkkää musiikkia. Sen takia ostan vinyylejä, mutta jos artistilla on vain CD-levyjä, nekin kelpaavat. Kuuntelen myös kotonani suoratoistopalveluja.

Mikä oli viimeisin vinyyliostoksenne?

Peter: Viimeisin ostokseni oli Foo Fightersin “Sonic Highway.”

Chris: Ostin Pink Floydin “Dark Side Of The Moonin.”

Sosiaalinen media on kasvattanut merkitystään viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana. Kuinka tärkeässä asemassa se on JD Millerille?

Peter: Se on todella tärkeä ja sitä tarvitaan. Se on väylä, jonka kautta jutellaan faneille sekä mainostetaan tuotteita. Me käytämme Facebookia, Twitteriä ja vähän Instagramia.

Chris: Mielestäni se on tärkeä faneille. Olemme tehneet bäkkärivideoita ja ”kymmenen nopeaa kysymystä” -videoita, sekä nauhoittaneet keikkoja. Olemme myös tehneet piloja kitaristillemme, joka ei pidä vihanneksista, joten olemme yrittäneet saada hänet syömään niitä. Mielestäni some on hyvä asia. Yhtyeemme soittaa modernia rockia ja minusta nykyaikaisten yhtyeiden on tärkeää olla osa sosiaalista mediaa.

Jos saisitte suunnitella yhden tavaran, joka kuvaisi yhtyettänne, mikä se olisi?

Chris & Peter: Tämä on vaikea kysymys! Olisimme jonkinlainen auto. Olisimme iso, nykyaikainen amerikkalainen muskeliauto, joka kuluttaa paljon bensiiniä ja sisältää paljon tietokoneita!

Swedish melodic rock band JD Miller released their second album ”World War X” in this spring. Kaaoszine had an opportunity to talk with band’s vocalist Peter Halldén and bassist Chris David. Men talked about their new album and what kind of a live band JD Miller is. Gentlemen also told their opinions about Dio’s hologram shows and in what form they buy their music.

Hi guys! How has the year 2017 been so far to JD Miller?

Peter: It has been a good year for us, I mean we released our second album “World War X” in April, we have received good reviews and played many gigs. We have had things to do as a rock band. It has been a hectic year but a good one.

Chris: We did also our first show outside of Sweden, it was in Finland in Utajärvi and we played there in a festival called Untorock in June.

You released “World War X” in April like you said. What kind of a response did the album get?

Peter:  The album has received mostly positive reviews and only one or two bad reviews. Also the big magazines like Sweden Rock Magazine gave a good review for us.

Chris: Usually the scores have been 7-8/10 so the album has scored well. Your review was also great.

I listened your debut album a few days ago, and I heard the progress which you have made between the albums. How do you think that the new album makes a difference compared to the debut album?

Peter: We think the same that we have evolved and it’s nice to hear that you noticed it as well. We have had some changes in the band, so this album has been made dominated by me and our drummer Emil, who made most of the music. We wanted to take it towards more metal, instead of the debut album, which is more rock. “World War X” is more progressive and melodic metal than our debut album. Also the new members have contributed to the album and made it like this. “World War X” is also more focused and has this one red line. First album was made by many members of the band, but this time drummer Emil made the basics, so this new album fits more together than the debut.

Like you mentioned, you have played many shows this year. What kind of a live band is JD Miller?

Peter: Very, very, very energetic. I mean I think we’re basically a live band and we sound good live. We don’t cut corners like some bands. We give everything in our shows and try to always make a good show. Of course we use backtracks and stuff like that, but when you’re a band of our size you can’t have an orchestra with you on stage. On this new album we have a lot of orchestra parts, and backtracks are the only way to show our vision live.

Unfortunately I missed your show in Utajärvi, but can you tell me when do we see JD Miller next time in Finland?

Chris: We can’t promise anything yet. Our next gig is with Amaranthe in Hagfors on this friday and we’re making arrangements for next spring. We’re planning to play in Europe but it’s still under working process, so we can’t yet say if Finland is a part of it or not.

Do you make set lists before the show or do you play spontaniously?

Peter: We do have a basic play list which we usually change a little bit. I mean in some shows we play more songs and in some shows less. But it is important to think about how songs work together, so that’s why we have some songs that are always part of the show. In this kind of structure it’s easy to mix some other songs into the set.

Talking about playing live, have you heard about these Ronnie James Dio Hologram shows? What do you think about this hologram tour?

Chris: Yes I have. Well I’m not a big fan of the hologram thing. I think they should let him rest. Even though I love Dio’s music I wouldn’t buy a ticket and go see a hologram show.

Peter: I don’t like the hologram idea either and I wouldn’t go to a show.

Nowadays stream services are ruling the music business even though vinyls have made a great come back. Do you still buy CD’s or vinyls or do you use stream services?

Chris: I bought a vinyl last week and I buy vinyls sometimes, but usually I use stream services.

Peter: I also buy vinyls especially when I really want to have that album. One of the reasons is that I want to support the artist by buying that album, but also for that I can get access to the art work and can appreciate them differently than just in digital form. That’s why I’d like to buy vinyls, but if an artist doesn’t have vinyls then I can buy CD’s as well. But at home I also use stream services.

Do you remember what was your latest vinyl you have bought?

Peter: Latest vinyl I bought was the Foo Fighters’s “Sonic Highway”.

Chris: I bought the Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon”.

Social media has increased it’s importance to bands in the last ten years. How important is social media to JD Miller?

Peter: It’s important and you need it today. It’s the channel where you talk to your fans and also when it comes to advertisements, it’s also important. We do use Facebook, Twitter and a little bit of Instagram as well.

Chris: I think it’s important to fans. We have made backstage videos and ten quick questions videos and also recorded our shows to internet. We have also made pranks to our guitarist by trying to get him to eat vegetables ‘cause he hates them. I think social media is good for bands. We play modern rock music so I think it’s even more important to modern bands to be part of the social media.

If you could name one thing, a product, that would describe your band perfectly, what would it be?

Chris & Peter: O’Lord that’s a hard question! We’d like to be some sort of a car. A big American modern muscle car that takes a lot of gas and has lots of computers.
