Metalcorea Venäjältä – esittelyssä Equilibrium Falls uuden singlen kera

Venäjältä kotoisin oleva metalcore-yhtye Equilibrium Falls on aktiivisesta urastaan huolimatta jäänyt suomalaisissa metallijulkaisussa vähäiselle huomiolle. Kaaoszine tavoitti sähköpostin välityksellä yhtyeen kitaristi Alexein ja vokalisti Sergeyn. Haastattelussa keskusteltiin muun muassa yhtyeen historiasta, bändin uudesta vokalistista ja tuoreesta singlestä.

Alexei: Hei! Kaikkea hyvää, kiitos! Toivottavasti sinäkin voit hyvin.

Kertokaa hieman yhtyeestänne Equilibrium Falls…

Alexei: Alkuun olimme ehdottomasti melodinen death metal -yhtye, mutta vuosien 2017-2018 välisenä aikana erilaiset muutokset alkoivat vaikuttaa tyyliimme. Menetimme kiinnostusta melodeathia kohtaan ja lähdimme etsimään inspiraation lähteitä muualta.

Sergey: Metalcore-yhtye omalla uniikin tunnelmallisella soundilla.

Millainen historia yhtyeellä on? Yhtyeitä, jotka ovat toimineet inspiraation lähteinä…

Alexei: Vuosien 2010-2013 välisenä aikana kasasimme porukkaa yhteen ja soitimme paikallisia keikkoja nauhoittaen samalla debyytti-EP:tämme ”In Absence of a View”. Noihin aikoihin olimme ruotsalaiseen melodeathiin kallistunut yhtye, johon vaikuttivat muun muassa In Flamesin, Dark Tranquilityn ja The Duskfallin kaltaiset nimet. ”In Absence of a View’stä” tuli hyvin melodeath-tyylinen julkaisu. Sen jälkeen julkaisimme pari singleä. Vuonna 2017 bändissä tapahtui muutoksia rumpalin ja toisen kitaristin jättäessä yhtyeen. Myöhemmin samaisena vuonna julkaisimme debyyttipitkäsoiton ”Frames And Horizons”, jolla yritimme löytää omaa tyyliämme säilyttäen soundin samalla melodeathina. Aika pian kyllästyimme kyseiseen genreen ja lähdimme etsimään sitä omaa uniikkia tyyliä julkaisemalla pari singleä vuosina 2017 ja 2018. Vuonna 2018 julkaisimme EP:n ”Within The Core”, joka oli mielestäni ensimmäinen oikea askel siihen omaan tyylisuuntaamme. Jatkoimme musiikin kirjoittamista ja julkaisemista sekä musiikkivideoiden tekemistä.

Mistä saatte inspiraation kappaleisiin? Missä teemoissa lyriikat pyörivät?

Alexei: En tiedä. Tällä hetkellä on aika vaikea sanoa, mitkä yhtyeet tai minkälainen musiikki inspiroi. Varmaankin sieltä täältä, pikkuisen kaikkea! Inspiroidun useista eri asioista; esimerkiksi tunnelma tai esteettinen elokuva saattaa riittää. Yleinen tunnelma siis. Lyriikat pyörivät vaihtelevissa teemoissa. Esimerkiksi näkemyksemme uskonnosta (kappaleet ”Crossed Out” ja ”Opium For The Soul”) tutkivat kyseistä teemaa. On myös kappaleita henkilökohtaisista kamppailuista kuten ”Within The Core” ja ”Through The Storm”. ”Red Star Residue” on historiallinen kappale, joka käsittelee Venäjän/Neuvostoliiton jälkeistä yhteiskuntaa.

Sergey: Kysymys on mielestäni hieman omituinen, koska mikä tahansa voi inspiroida sinua, etkä välttämättä edes huomaa sitä. Ei se mene kuitenkaan niin, että juokset ympäriinsä inspiraatiota etsien. Inspiraation lähde voi olla ihan mitä tahansa: kirjat, musiikki tai jopa raitiovaunulla matkustaminen. Ja usein nuo asiat eivät liity toisiinsa.

Bändissä tapahtui muutoksia, ja riveihin liittyi uusi vokalisti. Saisimmeko hänestä pienen esittelyn, miten löysitte hänet?

Alexei: Kyllä, tänä kesänä saimme uudeksi vokalistiksi Sergey Pavlov-Blokhinin. Sanoisin, että löysimme toisemme hyvin samoihin aikoihin joskus vuonna 2015, kun soitimme samalla lavalla hänen yhtyeensä Flamornin kanssa. Myöhemmin vuonna 2017 hän oli ensimmäinen, joka tuli ostamaan meidän ”Opium For The Soul” -t-paidan. Samalla minulle selvisi, että hän diggaa Equilibrium Fallsia. Hän oli luonnollisesti ensimmäinen, johon otimme yhteyttä ruvetessamme etsimään uutta vokalistia.

Julkaisitte uuden sinkun uuden vokalistin myötä. Mitä voitte kertoa singlestä? Vaikuttiko uusi vokalisti singlen tyyliin, eli onko muutosta aikaisempaan [materiaaliin] verrattuna?

Alexei: Uusi single on melodisempi ja melankolisempi kuin aikaisempi single ”Crossed Out” mutta samassa tyylissä kuitenkin. Vokalistin vaihdoksella ei ole ollut vaikutusta musiikin kirjoittamisen prosessiin. En tiedä, onko se hyvä vai huono juttu. Sergeyllä on toki erilainen ääni ja tapa esiintyä, joten vokaalit kuulostavat luonnollisesti erilaisilta. Tuotannonkin osalta oli pientä eroa. Päätimme, että Randy Saelee hoitaa kappaleen miksauksen Precursors Studiolla Yhdysvalloissa. Hän teki erinomaista työtä, ja olemme erittäin tyytyväisiä siihen!

Mitä tulee uuden singlen lyriikoihin, niin se on yksi niistä kappaleista, joiden lyriikat ovat avoimia erilaisille tulkinnoille. Minusta se on varsin mielenkiintoista, koska kappaleesta tulee jokaiselle kuuntelijalle henkilökohtaisempi; jokainen näkee siinä oman merkityksen. Ja se on hienoa. Mutta yleisesti ottaen kappale kertoo siitä, miten ihmiset voivat vaikuttaa sinuun aina siihen pisteeseen saakka, että sinusta tulee sellainen, mitä et koskaan halunnut olla. Sinusta tulee ikään kuin heidän peilikuvansa. Siksi laulu on nimeltään ”Reflected Upon Me”. Sana ”reflect” tarkoittaa ”ajattelua jostakin”. Se tavallaan symboloikin sitä, miten muiden ihmisten ajatuksia pakotetaan päähäsi, jolloin sinut saadaan muuttumaan eri ihmiseksi… Sellainen karkea kuvaus lyriikoiden sisällöstä.

Millaisia lähitulevaisuuden suunnitelmia teillä on? Uutta albumia, keikkaa?

Alexei: Julkaisemme lähitulevaisuudessa yhden singlen lisää ja sen jälkeen ehkä EP:n. Se menee luonnollisesti jonnekin ensi vuoden puolelle. Keikkojen suhteen toivoimme, että olisimme päässeet soittamaan, mutta tällä hetkellä meillä on haasteita rumpalin kanssa, mikä rajoittaa keikkailua. Kuka tietää, kun tämä koronatilanne on ohi, niin ehkä tulemme soittamaan myös Suomeen. Se olisi siistiä.

Vaikka bändissä puhaltavatkin uudet tuulet, niin suosittele muutamaa bändinne kappaletta niille, joille te olette bändinä vielä tuntematon tuttavuus…

Alexei: Suosittelisin seuraavia kappaleita:

”Crossed Out” julkaistiin aikaisemmin tänä vuonna. Se on nopeatempoinen, aggressiivinen kappale synkällä tunnelmalla. Sanoisin, että se oli meidän ensimmäinen yrityksemme tehdä hiukan enemmän deathcore-tyylistä settiä. Lyriikoiden teema pyörii uskonnossa, pääsääntöisesti kristinuskossa, josta siis nimikin.

”Within The Core” -kappale kertoo erilaisista demoneista, joita moni meistä kantaa sisällään. Voit yrittää paeta niitä muuttamalla elämääsi ja ympäristöäsi, mutta se ei toimi ongelmien ja haasteiden ollessa sisälläsi. Ellet korjaa ensin niitä asioita, et ole koskaan täysin tyytyväinen itseesi ja elämääsi – mitä koskaan teetkin ja missä ikinä menetkin.

Russian metalcore band Equilibrium Falls hasn’t gotten too much attention in Finnish metal publications, yet, having an active career. Kaaoszine reached out to the band’s guitarist Alexei and vocalist Sergey to learn more about the band, its history and newly released single as well as band’s new vocalist.

Hey! How are you?

Alexei: Hi! Doing fine, thank you! Hope you’re doing good, too.

In your own words, what kind of a band Equilibrium Falls is?

Alexei: Initially we were most definitely a Melodic Death Metal band. But as of around 2017-2018 things really started to change in terms of style. We lost interest in Melodic Death Metal so we started looking elsewhere for inspiration.

Sergey: A metalcore band with its own unique atmospheric sound.

And your history? Can you name bands that have acted as inspiration and influence?

Alexei: From around 2010 to 2013 we were getting the line-up together. After that was completed we started playing local shows and at the same time recording our debut EP – ”In Absence of a View”. At that time, like I mentioned previously, we were a very Swedish Melodic Death orientated band influenced by bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquility, The Duskfall etc. So ”In Absence of a View” turned out to be a very Melodic Death Metal release. After that came a couple more singles. In 2017 there was a lineup change – the drummer and the second guitarist left the band. And later on in 2017 we released our debut LP – ”Frames And Horizons”. With this release we tried to carve out our own style whilst keeping the overall sound as Melodic Death Metal. But after this release we lost interest in Melodic Death Metal and started trying to figure out our own unique style even further releasing singles in 2017 and 2018. And in 2018 we released our EP – ”Within The Core”. I think this was our first real step in ”our own” direction. From that moment on we continued writing and releasing music and also making music videos.

Where does the band get inspiration from? What kind of themes do the lyrics revolve around?
Alexei: I don’t know. At the moment it’s hard to say what bands or music inspire us. It’s probably a little bit of everything! I think I can be inspired by various things…for example an atmosphere or an aesthetic a film might have. Just the general vibe of it. Lyrics revolve around various themes. For example our view on religion, for example songs like ”Crossed Out” or ”Opium for the Soul” explore this theme. There are also songs about more ”personal struggles”, songs like ”Within the Core” and ”Through the Storm” are about that. ”Red Star Residue” is a more ”historical” song, and is also about (Russian/post-Soviet) society.

Sergey: I think this is a rather strange question. Because absolutely anything can inspire you and at times you don’t even notice it. It’s not as though you’re running around looking for inspiration for a new song. It can be just about anything: books, music or even a ride on the tram. And a lot of the times these things are not related.

You had a change in your line-up and the band got a new vocalist. Who is he, how did you find him?

Alexei: Yes, as of this summer we have a new vocalist – Sergey Pavlov-Blokhin. I think we found out about each other some time around 2015 when we played on the same stage with his band Flamorn. Later on in about 2017 he was the first person to buy our ”Opium for the Soul” t-shirt and it was at that time that I found out that he actually liked Equilibrium Falls. So naturally he was the first person we contacted when we started looking for a new vocalist.

You have already released a new single with the new vocalist. What can you tell about the new single? Did he have an effect in the style, i.e. does the new single differ from your previous releases?

Alexei: The new single is a little more melodic and melancholic than our last single ”Crossed Out”. But it’s in the same style. A change in vocals has not had any effect on the music writing process. Don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing… But of course Sergey has a different voice, different way of performing so obviously the vocals will definitely sound different. Regarding production – this will be different too. We decided to have Randy Saelee mix and master the song at Precursor Studios (USA). He did an awesome job, we’re really happy with it!

Regarding the lyrical content of the new single – it’s one of those songs that are open to various interpretations. I find this quite interesting because the song becomes more personal for each listener due to the fact that everyone sees their own meaning. And that’s great. But in general the song is about how people can influence you to the point where you become something you never wanted to be. Kind of like you becoming their mirror image. That is why the song is called ”Reflected Upon Me”. Also the word ”reflect” means to think about something. So it kind of symbolises how other people’s thoughts are enforced upon you and make you change and become a different person. That’s pretty much the rough outline of the lyrical content.

What are your plans for the near future? New album, gigs?

Alexei: In the near future we will release one more single and then possibly an EP after that. But that’s obviously going to be some time next year. As for gigs – we were hoping to start playing gigs but at the moment there are certain issues with our drummer that restrain us from this. We certainly hope they will be resolved soon and we can start playing once again. Who knows, once the Corona thing is over, perhaps even in Finland? That would be really cool.

You now have a new direction with your new vocalist but can you name two ”older” songs for people who are not familiar with Equilibrium Falls, yet?

Alexei: A couple of tracks I would recommend:

”Crossed Out”: This was released earlier this year. It’s a fast, aggressive song with a dark atmosphere. I think this is our first attempt at something a bit more deathcore-ish. The lyrical theme is religion, primarily Christianity, hence the title of the song.

”Within the Core”: This song is about the various demons a lot of us carry inside ourselves. You can attempt to get away from them by trying to change your life and your surroundings… but it never works. Because the problems and issues are all inside you. And unless you fix those things first you’ll never be completely content with yourself and your life whatever you do and wherever you may go.
