Mikä ihmeen Supreme Unbeing? – Haastattelussa ensisinglensä julkaissut mysteeribändi [FI/EN]

Kaaoszinea lähestyi mysteerinen metalliyhtye. Supreme Unbeing -nimeä käyttävä kollektiivi koostuu joukosta profeettoja, jotka seurasivat kollektiivisen alitajuntamme ruumiillistumaa, Zac Redia, joka toimii bändin laulajana ja viestien välittäjänä. Päätimme tarjota Zacille sekä yhtyeen rumpalille Al Myteelle mahdollisuuden jakaa missionsa suomalaisille. Bändi julkaisi juuri ensimmäisen singlensä ”You’ll Never Make It”, joka on osa yhtyeen lokakuussa julkaistavaa debyyttialbumia ”Enter Reality”.

Tervehdys! Miten vuosi on sujunut?

Zac: Vuosi on ollut todella jännittävä, jos unohtaa tämän tilanteen, jossa me kaikki tällä hetkellä olemme. Aloimme työstää albumiamme puolitoista vuotta sitten, ja vuosi on ollut melko intensiivinen siinä mielessä. Nyt olemme todella innoissamme päästessämme julkaisemaan asioita. Yritämme pitää tämän tahdin yllä ja koettaa katsoa maailman tilanteen ohi – on todella surullista puhua tästä kaikesta koko ajan kuten varmasti ymmärrät. Mutta koen, että musiikkiin keskittyminen on ollut jotain, joka on auttanut meitä selviämään tästä tilanteesta. Ja luulen, että loppujen lopuksi syy sille, miksi teemme musiikkia, on se, että haluamme tehdä maailmasta paremman paikan.

Julkaisitte juuri ensimmäisen varsinaisen kappaleenne ”You’ll Never Make it”. Mistä se kertoo?

Zac: Lyhyesti sanottuna se kertoo siitä, että yritetään ymmärtää, miten tämä kaikki oikein toimii [naurua]. Miten maailmankaikkeus toimii, mitä elämä on, mitä ihmisyys on. Moni noista kysymyksistä on sellaisia, joita luulen monen pohtivan aina silloin tällöin. Ja niitä on hankalaa ymmärtää. Joten viestinä on se, että voit jatkaa sen miettimistä, miten kaikki toimii, mutta että se ajaa sinut todennäköisesti lopulta hulluksi. Tämä on enemmänkin haaste – tuletko onnistumaan? Tai sitten sen voi ottaa itsensä vapauttamisena: päästät irti kaikesta siitä, mitä luulet, että sinun pitää tehdä, ja olet vain oma itsesi, jolloin tulet olemaan onnellinen ja kykenet elämään elämääsi.

Koetko kappaleen edustavan hyvin albumin musiikkia?

Zac: Luulen, että albumilla on enemmän raskaampia ja nopeampia kappaleita kuin tämä [jo julkaistu sinkku] mutta koen levyn olevan hyvä sekoitus erilaisia variaatioita ja erilaisia kappaleita. Olen siitä luonnollisesti innoissani. Seuraava kappale tullaan julkaisemaan heinäkuussa. Albumi on yleisesti… Me näemme ne kappaleet viesteinä. Näemme ne viesteinä kaikille niille, jotka ovat miettineet näitä elämän eksistentiaalisia teemoja. Luulen sen olevan asia, jonka kuulijat tulevat tunnistamaan sitä mukaa, kun julkaisemme lisää singlejä, ja kun he pääsevät kuulemaan albumin.

Mistä bändinne mysteerisyys juontuu?

Zac: Koemme, että olemme maailmankaikkeudessa yksilöinä melko mitättömiä. Sen takia koemme, että fokuksen pitäisi olla kappaleissa ja viesteissämme. Haluamme painottaa sitä vahvasti ja toivomme, että ihmiset tunnistavat niistä itsensä tai ne teemat, joita albumilla on, ja siksi haluamme olla aidot versiot itsestämme kuten koemme olevamme maailmankaikkeudessakin. Sen takia olemme mitä olemme, ja miksi me yksilöinä olemme mitättömiä. Koko mysteeriajatus on enemmänkin sen takia, että haluamme keskittyä kappaleisiin ja niiden viesteihin sen sijaan, että keskittyisimme siihen, keitä me olemme yksilöinä. Ymmärrän kuitenkin, että meillä on nämä animaatiohahmot, ja että kaikki videot tulevat olemaan animoituja. Se on siistiä ja houkuttelevaa, ja siinä mielessä haluamme pitää homman salaperäisenä ja mielenkiintoisena. Mutta vain sen takia, että voimme keskittyä kappaleisiin ja niiden sanomaan.

Mistä olette saaneet vaikutteita tarinaanne ja musiikkiinne?

Zac: Mitä tulee hahmoihin ja tarinaan, niin luulen, että todennäköisesti löydätte tunnistettavia teemoja luomakunnasta itsestään ja eksistentialismista ja siitä, keitä me olemme, ja mikä on meidän paikkamme maailmankaikkeudessa ja luomakunnassa. Haluamme tavallaan luoda oman universumimme käyttämällä hahmojamme ja salaperäisiä teemoja. Musiikillisesti me olemme kaikki yksilöitä, ja se on meidän olemuksemme perusta, joten koska olemme varttuneet tällä planeetalla musiikkia kuunnellen, niin meidän vaikutteita ovat luonnollisesti  olleet ne suuret bändit kuten Metallica ja Guns N’ Roses. Meiltä on kysytty monta kertaa sitä, miten kuvailisimme musiikkiamme ja sanoisin, että se on kuin Metallican ja Guns N’ Rosesin rakkaudesta syntynyt lapsi. Siinä on Metallican raskautta ja Guns N’ Rosesin hienostuneempi ja teoreettisempi puoli. Koen, että moni loistava bändi välittää yleisölleen viestejä, ja se on inspiroinut minua, kun olen tehnyt nämä kappaleet ja miettinyt, mitä me haluamme tehdä.

Al: Minulle se oli Hanoi Rocks, joka tutustutti minut rock and rolliin, ja Andy McCoy on edelleen suuri esikuvani.

Miten luulette erottuvanne niistä bändeistä, jotka ovat myös luoneet itselleen jonkin tietyn imagon? Siitä on luonnollisesti monia esimerkkejä kuten vaikka Ghost ja Avatar.

Zac: Luulen, että kaikki bändit haluavat erottua toisista bändeistä tavalla tai toisella ja ymmärrän sen, että jotkut tekevät sitä saadakseen julkisuutta. Kyse ei ole aina pelkästään musiikista, vaan myös show’lla ja visuaaleilla on väliä. Ne ovat tärkeitä asioita, ja bändit, jotka mainitsit, ovat tietenkin mahtavia, ja myös niitä ennen on ollut loistavia tekijöitä kuten esimerkiksi Alice Cooper, joka on tavallaan teatraalisen rockin ja metallin isoisä. Mutta emme tee tätä tullaksemme kuuluisiksi ja voin sanoa sen täysin todenmukaisesti. Tämä on jotain, joka on kypsynyt pinnan alla koko elämämme ajan ja nyt koemme olevamme valmiita tähän. Meille on ollut tärkeää sanoa, keitä me olemme, ja keskittyä musiikkiin ja antaa ihmisten nauttia sen kuuntelemisesta. Toivottavasti se on jotain, mistä ihmiset tulevat tykkäämään.

Al: Ja lopulta musiikki tulee puhumaan puolestaan.

Oletteko soittaneet bändeissä, jotka ihmiset saattaisivat tietää?

Zac: Tuo on hyvä kysymys, johon en voi valitettavasti vastata.

Onko teillä suunnitelmissa kertoa tarinanne muillakin tavoin kuin musiikin kautta?

Zac: Kyllä, meillä on itse asiassa monia mielenkiintoisia asioita tuloillaan liittyen Supreme Unbeingin universumiin. Haluamme luoda kuulijoillemme maailman, ja että kuulijat voivat olla siinä osallisina. Meidän tavoitteemme on pitkällä tähtäimellä luoda matka ja seikkailu, johon kaikki voivat osallistua yhdessä. Meiltä on tulossa siistejä juttuja.

Onko teillä suunnitelmissa soittaa konsertteja, kun se on taas turvallista?

Zac: Kyllä, se on todellakin jotain sellaista, mitä haluamme tehdä ja luulen, että olemme yhtä innokkaita pääsemään siihen pisteeseen kuin kaikki muutkin. Vaikka meillä onkin nämä animaatiohahmot ja kaikki tämä salaperäisyys, haluamme silti esiintyä kuulijoillemme. On luonnollisesti vähän ikävää julkaista uutta materiaalia tähän maailman aikaan mutta aiomme odottaa. Toivottavasti olemme vielä enemmän innoissamme, kun pääsemme soittamaan ensimmäisen konserttimme.

Teillä on levytyssopimus Megadeth-basisti David Ellefsonin perustaman EMP Label Groupin kanssa. Millaista heidän kanssaan on ollut työskennellä?

Zac: Olemme tehneet joitakin projekteja aikaisemmin, joten tiedämme, miten tämä bisnes toimii, ja me halusimme tehdä asiat omalla tavallamme. Thom [Hazaert] ja David ymmärsivät sen alusta alkaen, ja sen takia päätimme tehdä töitä heidän kanssaan. Yhteistyö on ollut toistaiseksi hyvää, ja he ovat tukeneet meitä paljon.

Mitä haluaisitte sanoa tätä haastattelua lukeville ja heille, jotka aikovat tutustua musiikkiinne?

Zac: Toivomme, että haluatte liittyä mukaan tälle matkalle, ja että voitte samaistua musiikkimme. Toivomme pääsevämme näkemään teidät ennemmin tai myöhemmin sekä Suomessa että muualla. Haluaisimme tutustua Suomeen paremmin.

Al: Ja me tulemme todellakin Suomeen heti, kun tämä hulluus päättyy.

Kaaoszine was approached by the mysterious metal band. The collective known as Supreme Unbeing is formed by a group of prophets who follow Zac Red, the physical form of our collective consciousness, who also serves as their singer and message-bearer. We got intrigued and offered Zac and the drummer Al Mytee a chance to share their message in an interview.

The band just released their first single ”You’ll Never Make It” which is taken from their upcoming debut album ”Enter Reality” set to release in October.

Hello! How has your year been so far?

Zac: This year has been, you know, looking past the situation I think we all are in now, I think it has been a pretty exciting year for us. We actually started making the album about a year and a half ago and it has been a pretty intense year in that sense and now we are very pumped and excited that things are set to release now. We are kind of trying to keep the pace and trying to just look forward and past the situation in the world – it’s kinda sad to talk about this all the time, you probably understand. But I think just focusing on the music is something that has helped us through the situation, and I think that in the end that’s why we do music, because we want to make the world a better place.

You just released your first song ”You’ll Never Make it”. What is the song about?

Zac: In short the song is about trying to understand how everything works [laughter]. How does the universe work, what is life, what is humanity. And a lot of those questions are something that I think everyone kinda ponders about every now and then. It’s something that’s hard to grasp. So this is kind of an message that… You can keep thinking about how everything works, but that will probably just drive you insane. So this is more of an challenge; will you make it? Or as an liberation for yourself; you let go of everything that you think you have to do and just be yourself and you will be happy and be able to live life to the fullest.

Do you think the song is a good representation of the album?

Zac: I think there are quite a few heavier songs and more uptempo songs than this one, but I think the album is actually a really good mix of a good variation of different songs. I’m obviously excited about that. The next song is going to be released in July. The album in general I think is… We see the songs as messages. We see them as messages to everyone who has been thinking about these existential themes of life. I think that’s a thing that the listeners will recognize going forward with the upcoming singles and the album in general.

What is the story behind the mystery of the band? 

Zac: We feel that we as individuals are quite unimportant in the whole plot of the universe. That’s why we feel that the focus should be the messages and songs. That’s something that we want to focus heavily on, and we hope that people will recognize themselves or some of the themes on the album and that’s why we feel like we want to be the true versions of ourselves and as we feel ourselves with the universe. So that’s why we are who we are, and why we as individuals are quite unimportant. So the mystery part of it is more to the extent that we actually want to focus on the songs and the messages rather than focusing on us as individuals. However, I understand as well that we have all these animated characters, and that all the videos will be animated. That’s cool and that’s enticing as well. In that sense we want to keep it interesting and mysterious but all for the purpose of focusing on the songs and the messages in them.

Where do you take your influences on the story and the music?

Zac: For the characters and the story I’ll think you’ll probably see a very recognizable theme about creation itself and existentialism and a philosophical aspect of who we are, our place in the universe and our place in the creation. And we want to kind of create our own universe in that sense by using the characters and the mysterious themes. Musically speaking we all are individuals and that’s the foundation of who we are, so obviously when we have grown on this planet and listening to music, and for ourselves it has been obviously the huge bands; Metallica, Guns N’ Roses… We have been asked many times how we would describe the music that we make, and I would say it’s actually like if Metallica and Guns N’ Roses would have a lovechild, because it’s the heaviness of Metallica and the more sophisticated and the more theoretical side of Guns N’ Roses. I think that a lot of great bands convey great messages to their audiences, and that is something that has been inspiring for us and to me when I have written all the songs and thought about what we want to do ourselves.

Al: For me it was Hanoi Rocks that introduced me to rock and roll, and Andy McCoy is still a big idol of mine.

How do you think you will stand out from the rest of the bands trying to have some sort of an image for themselves, too? Obviously there are bands like Ghost and Avatar for example…

Zac: I think that every band wants to stand out in one way or another and obviously I can appreciate if bands do it if they want publicity. It’s not always about the music: it can be about the show or the visuals. These things are important, and the bands that you named are obviously great bands, and there have been other great acts before them, like Alice Cooper being kind of a grandfather of doing more theatrical rock and heavy metal. But we don’t do this because we want to be famous, and this is something I say very truthfully. This is something that has been boiling under the surface for all of our lives, and now we feel ready to do this. We felt like it’s important for us to say who we are and focus on the music and let people have good time listening to the music and hopefully that’s something the people will like.

Al: And in the end the music will speak for itself.

Have you guys played in other bands that people might know?

Zac: That is a good question which we can’t answer.

Do you have any plans to tell your story in other ways than just music?

Zac: Yes, we actually have a lot of interesting things coming along with the Supreme Unbeing universe. We want to create this universe for our audience and for the listeners to be a part of. That is the ultimate goal that we are striving for, to create a journey and a quest that everyone can join on together. So we do have some cool things coming up.

Do you have plans to perform live when it’s safe to do it again?

Zac: Yeah, that is definitely something we want to do, and I think that we are as eager as everybody else to get out there. Even though we have the animated characters and all this mysteriousness we still want to play for our listeners. Obviously it’s a bummer to release new stuff  during these times, but we are just going to wait for it and hopefully we are going to be even more pumped when we get to play our first show.

On your social media it says that you are signed to EMP Label Group. How has it been working with them so far?

Zac: We have done some things in the past so we know how the industry works, and we felt like we wanted to do things our way, and Thom [Hazaert] and David [Ellefson] understood that from the beginning, so that’s why we decided to work with them. It has been a good collaboration so far and they have been very supportive.

What would you like to say to the people reading this interview and checking out your new single?

Zac: We hope that the listeners will want to become a part of our journey and that they can relate to the music, and hopefully we get to see you sooner or later in Finland and everywhere else. We would love to explore Finland a little more.

Al: And we are definitely coming to Finland when this madness is over.
