Mysticum

Mysticum 2011Norjalainen black metal -yhtye Mysticum julkaisi ensimmäisen, klassikoksi muodostuneen albuminsa ”In the Streams of Inferno” vuonna 1996.

Mielestämme tämä täytti kaikki odotuksemme ja vaatimuksemme, joita meillä oli tälle ”In The Streams of Inferno” -debyyttimme seuraajalle. Kansitaiteesta tuli loistava, kiitos Peder Klingwallin ja Daniele Valeranin. Lisäksi suuri kiitos koordinoinnista menee managerillemme Mathias Løkenille.

Mysticum on perustettu vuonna 1992. Tämän jälkeen olette julkaisseet ainoastaan yhden kokopitkän albumin ”In the Streams of Inferno” vuonna 1996, joitain demoja ja EP:itä sekä kokoelmaalbumin.

Soundinne vaikuttaa hieman muuttuneen vuosien varrella. ”Planet Satanilla” tuntuu olevan enemmän industriaali-viboja kuin ”In the Streams of Infernolla”. Tästä huolimatta tuleva albuminne kuulostaa toki Mysticumilta. Kuinka kuvailisit itse tätä albumia? Mitä voimme siltä odottaa? Miten vertaisit sitä aikaisempaan materiaaliinne, erityisesti ”The Streams of Infernoon”?

Herr General Cerastes: Tämä nimi päätettiin jo vuonna 1996 ”In the Streamsin…” seuraajan nimeksi. Visiomme ”Planet Satanista” on seuraava:

–          mahtavin, kovin ja suurin planeetta multiversumissa

–          sen uloin kerros koostuu Satanium -ultra-raskasmetallista, jolla on ytimessään 666 protonia

–          sen sisin ydin on puhdasta Mysticumia, kaikista raskainta metallia. Sillä on 888 protonia ytimessään

–          planeetta, josta huokuu virheettömyys, ylivertaisuus ja voitto

–          planeetta, jonne Lucifer ylpeänä lähettäisi eliittinsä

–          Lucifer itse polttomerkitsee sydämensä helvetintulella logomme siihen

Haha.

Entä voisitko kertoa jotain tulevan albumin lyriikoista?

Pääasiallinen inspiraatio on syvä viha uskonnon konsepteja kohtaan.

Voimmeko jonain päivänä odottaa kuulevamme uutta materiaalia Mysticumilta?

Herr General Cerastes: Tekemättä mitänä lupauksia, luvassa on toinen albumi. Muutama biisi on alkuvaiheessa, ja keskitymme uuteen materiaaliin viimeisteltyämme live-shown.

Paljon kiitoksia haastattelusta! Onko vielä jotain, mitä haluaisit sanoa faneillenne?

Herr General Cerastes: Tervehdys kaikille vanhoille ja uusille Mysticum-faneille! Lisäksi tervehdys Suomen bm-skenelle. Olkoon ”Planet Satan” teidän kaikkien kanssanne! Kuunnelkaa ainoastaan maksimivolyymilla!!!

English version:

Mysticum 2011The Norwegian black metal band Mysticum released their first and classic album “In the Streams of Inferno” in 1996. The band mixed black metal with industrial-style synths, creating a then unique kind of music. Although the band has a long career behind them, they definitely haven’t rushed into releasing their second album, as we had to wait 18 years for the second full-length. Now finally on 27th of October the band released the album called “Planet Satan” via Peaceville Records. Kaaoszine contacted the band’s vocalist-guitarist Herr General Cerastes just before the album was released and asked him about the new album and the band’s career.

Hello! How has the year 2014 been so far for Mysticum and yourself?

Herr General Cerastes: Well, it’s been a productive and exciting year for us, and definitely the busiest year ever. The year started with completing and polishing the “Planet Satan”-production. We went straight on from there with the recordings, which at times were challenging and demanding. But it’s extremely satisfying to be back in a studio to finally record our long-awaited album. Also the process with the mixing and mastering gave us some hard pieces to chew on. The challenges were dealt with and end product is something we are proud of. A big thanks goes to Sverre Dæhlie from Audiopain at Fias Co. studios! We feel that it fulfilled all expectations and demands we had for our successor to the “In the Streams of Inferno” debut. The cover-art became also excellent, thanks to Peder Klingwall and Daniele Valerani. Also a big hail goes out to our management Mathias Løken for coordinating.

Mysticum was established in 1992. Since then you’ve released only one full-length album in 1996, “In the Streams of Inferno”, and some demos and EP’s as well as a compilation album. You’ve also been on hiatus a few times during the years. Could you tell something about the band’s career in general? How do you see it?

Mysticum 2014Herr General Cerastes: In the really early days, when we first started out as Sabazios, we began with a human drummer. But very soon we bought a Roland drum machine, from a guy connected to the rehearsal-studios we used at that time. This was late in the year 1990. Starting working with this, we immediately knew that this was a given part of our musical future. Feeling the atmosphere and expression it had combined with our characteristic use of guitars, was nothing but perfect.

After some demos and our debut “In The Streams of Inferno”, we left the scene in the late 90`s, frustrated and tired of the direction the scene was heading. The Norwegian black metal experienced a media rush in the mid 90`s and soon after this a huge amount of bands popped out from everywhere. Suddenly “everyone” played in a BM-band or listened to it. This loss of integrity and quality within the scene, was our main reason for stepping out. Also an eccentric die-hard-partying lifestyle with increasing addiction to different substances made it hard, if not impossible to be productive.

We briefly got together to make “Black Magic Mushrooms” on the split with Audiopain, released in 2003. Then three years ago we met and decided it was time to begin the work on the production of “Planet Satan”, regardless of the state of the BM-scene. Older and more reflected, our desire is to make outstanding gut-hitting metal with a clear anti-religious/anti-Christian message.

You’ve now been active since 2011 and your long-anticipated second full-length album named “Planet Satan” will be released on October 27th. Why did you choose wait this long to finally get the second album recorded and ready to come out?

Mysticum Planet Satan 2014Herr General Cerastes: After we got together in 2011 deciding to finally materialize “Planet Satan”, a period of time was spent upgrading our hard- and software. Then some time was used getting to know how to abuse the equipment to our advantage. From there on an explosion of ideas, new and old surfaced. Deciding which to pursue, we thoroughly went to work composing the album. Certain obstacles were met and dealt with. We never rushed anything.

It appears that your sound has changed a bit during the years. On “Planet Satan” there seems to be more of an industrial vibe that let’s say, on “In the Streams of Inferno”, but still, your upcoming album sounds surely like Mysticum. How would you describe the album yourself? What can we expect from the album? And how would you compare it to your previous material, especially “In the Streams of Inferno”?

Herr General Cerastes: I don’t want to blow too many surprises regarding what to expect from the album. But you can be sure it’s a merciless antichristian ass-kick of an album. We think it sounds 100% pure Mysticum with no artificial add-ons to make up for passed time. We did and do exactly what we want, giving off a timeless expression. We think it sounds fucking excellent! Hah!

You’ve already let out the first track on the album, called “LSD”. Is there a specific reason you chose this particular track?

Herr General Cerastes: We thought it was the best track to release first since it has all the trades of old Mysticum, as well as representing fully what “Planet Satan” is all about.

And how did you come up with the title “Planet Satan”? Is there some meaning behind that?

Herr General Cerastes: This title was already decided in 1996 as the name for our follow up for the “In the Streams.. “crelease. Our visions for “Planet Satan” are as follows;

– The grandest, hardest and biggest sphere in the multiverse.

– Its outer layer consists of the ultra-heavy metal Satanium with 666 protons in its nucleus.

– Its inner core is pure Mysticum, the heaviest metal of all. With 888 protons in its nucleus.

– A sphere which oozes of flawlessness, superiority and victory.

– A sphere Lucifer proudly would send his elite.

– Lucifer himself branding our logo onto it with the hellfire from his heart.

– If God, his son and the heavens would have seen Planet Satan, they would piss themselves and immediately surrender!

This is a bit out there we know, but so are we. Ha-ha-ha.

And could you also tell something about the upcoming album’s lyrics? Where have you drawn inspiration for them?

Herr General Cerastes: Our lyrics are anti-Christian with cosmological overtones. Satan to us is the pure fire within ourselves and all rebelling against any lord or suppressor and refusing to acknowledge a higher being that we should obey or follow. The whole idea of having a master in life or death is unsound.  That is only for the weak sheep of ignorant optimism. Satan is the force of our will, battling with the whole concept of god and the followers of it. The only certainty is death, and from there on only the dead know. If there were to be a hell/heaven dimension in the afterlife, you can be sure to find us in the frontline tearing down the slaving institution of god. Some members write more than others but we share our ideas and together we agree upon the end result. Main inspiration is hate against the concepts of religion from deep within.

Mysticum has been rewarded as the creator and pioneer of industrial black metal. What are your own thoughts on the matter?

MysticumHerr General Cerastes: We agree and wear that hat with pride.

Are you planning to play live shows after the release of “Planet Satan”?

Herr General Cerastes: We will use the nearest future doing live-rehearsals. And use quite some time perfecting a live act. We will blast you all away at some point next year I guess. Information on when and where will follow.

Have you already made any plans for the future? Can we expect some new material from Mysticum someday?

Herr General Cerastes: Without doing any promises, there will be another album. A couple of tracks are in their infancy and a focus of new material will follow after a perfection of a live show. Will not give off any timeline, but for sure there will not be 18 years until our next release.

Thank you very much for the interview! Is there still something, you’d like to say for your fans?

Herr General Cerastes: Hail to all old and new Mysticum fans! Also a shout-out goes out to the BM scene in Finland. May ”Planet Satan” be with you all! Play at MAX volume only!!!
