Kun yhtye ilmoittaa suurimmiksi vaikuttajikseen sellaiset yhtyeet kuin Bal-Sagoth ja Blind Guardian, ei eeppisyydestä varmasti ole puute. Serbiasta kotoisin oleva dark metal -yhtye Númenor on par’aikaa valmistelemassa seuraajaa vuoden 2013 loistavalle debyyttialbumilleen ”Colossal Darkness”. Kaaoszine otti sähköpostitse yhteyttä yhtyeen vokalisti Despot Marko Miranovićiin ja kyseli lisää uuden albumin edistymisestä sekä muutenkin yhtyeen kuulumisista.

Voisitko alkuun esitellä lukijoillemme yhtyeenne kertomalla lyhyen biografian sekä edustamanne musiikin tyylisuunnan?

Númenor esittää eeppistä dark metallia, ja vaikutteemme tulevat joiltain brittiyhtyeiltä aina norjalaiseen 90-luvun skeneen. Perustin yhtyeen vuonna 2009 pitkäaikaisena ajatuksena vanhempien projektieni tuhkasta. 2013 julkaisimme ensimmäisen täyspitkän albumimme ”Colossal Darkness” Stygian Crypt Productionsin kautta ja tällä hetkellä olemme nauhoittamassa uutta albumiamme ”Sword And Sorcery”.

Olette tosiaan juuri nauhoittamassa uutta albumianne ”Sword And Sorcery”. Mitä voit kertoa meille tästä albumista? Kuinka vertailisit sitä aikaisempaan materiaaliinne?

Koska olemme jo nauhoittaneet valtaosan levyn materiaalista ja minä olen juuri nauhoittamassa lauluja viimeisiin kappaleisiin, minulla on jo selkeä kuva siitä, miltä albumi tulee kuulostamaan. Se tulee olemaan lähellä debyyttiämme ”Colossal Darkness”, mutta sanoisin sen olevan yhtenäisempi teos. Jotkin levyn kappaleista ovat synkempiä ja ambient-vaikutteisempia, kun taas toisissa kappaleissa on huomattavan eeppinen kosketus.

Mitkä yhtyeet ovat Númenorin suurimpia vaikuttajia? Kuunteletteko yhtään musiikkia metallin ulkopuolelta?

Vaikutteemme tulevat Bal-Sagothista aina vanhaan Blind Guardianiin, joten luonnollisesti olemme saaneet vaikutteita useilta yhtyeiltä, joilla on eeppisiä hetkiä musiikissaan. Ne tietysti vaihtelevat kappale kappaleelta, koska musiikkimme vaihtelee aina eeppisestä metallista eeppiseen black metalliin. Tietysti tykkään kuunnella mm. Mike Oldfieldia ja Hawkwindia, ja joku voikin löytää hetkittäisiä Oldfield-vaikutteita musiikistamme.

Mistä ammennatte inspiraation  musiikkiinne?

Tähän osaisi varmasti vastata säveltäjämme paremmin, mutta luulisin, että he saavat vaikutteensa useilta 90-luvun yhtyeiltä. Esimerkiksi Bálintin (Bálint Kemény – kitara) kappaleet sisältävät enemmän Bal-Sagoth-tyylisiä yksityiskohtia, kun taas Srđanin (Srđan ”Sirius” Branković – kitara) kappaleet ovat enemmän power metallin suuntaisia.

Kuinka kuvailisit musiikkianne ilman tyypillisiä sanoja, kuten ”metal”. Toisin sanottuna, kuinka kuvailisit musiikkianne henkilölle, joka ei ole koskaan kuunnellut metallimusiikkia aiemmin?

Avainsanat lienevät ”eeppinen” ja ”sinfoninen”, sillä Númenorin musiikki sisältää useita sinfonisia hetkiä. Myös fantasiatyyliset hetket ovat isossa roolissa musiikissamme.

Mitä voit kertoa meille Númenorin sanoituksista? Mistä aiheista ne yleisimmin kertovat ja kuinka tärkeä osa sanoitukset ovat yhtyeelle?

Näyttää siltä, että sanoitukset näyttelevät isoa roolia Númenorilla, sillä useat fanimme ovat olleet kiinnostuneita sanoitustemme taustoista. Itse asiassa Númenor on eeppistä metallia soittava yhtye, jolla on selkeästi fantasiakirjallisuuteen pohjautuvat sanoitukset, joiden vaikuttajina toimivat esimerkiksi kirjailijat Michael Moorcock, J.R.R. Tolkien sekä H.P. Lovecraft.

Tulette maasta, joka ei ole kovinkaan tunnettu metallimusiikista. Mitä yhtyeitä voit suositella meille Serbiasta?

Tunnen enemmän vanhoja yhtyeitä Serbiasta enkä oikeastaan ole tietoinen nykyhetkestä. Olen huomannut, että kymmenen vuotta (tai enemmän) sitten yhtyeillä oli edes yksi levy julkaistuna, nykypäivänä yhtyeillä on 1-2 kappaletta YouTubessa. Henkilökohtaisesti pidän eniten yhdestä vanhasta julkaisusta Serbian skenessä: yhtyeestä nimeltään Diluvium ja sen debyytistä ”Aurora”. Itse asiassa Serbian skene oli hyvin aktiivinen vuosina 2001-2005, jolloin siinä oli paljon yhtyeitä ja isompia tapahtumia. Luulen, että suurin osa näistä yhtyeistä on sittemmin hajonnut.

Kuinka vaikeaa (tai helppoa) on soittaa metallimusiikkia maassa, missä se ei ole niin suosittua?

Ei se ole laisinkaan vaikeaa. Itse asiassa se on välillä jopa etu, koska olemme hyvin yhteydessä toisiimme. Mutta verrattuna moniin muihin maihin, metallimusiikki on todellakin vähemmän suosittua Serbiassa.

Pyörität itse myös webzineä nimeltään Metal Sound, joten tiedät varmasti useampia suomalaisia metalliyhtyeitä. Mistä maamme yhtyeistä pidät eniten?

Tykkään kuunnella vanhempia artisteja maastanne, kuten vanhaa Amorphista ja vanhaa Sentencediä. Nämä kaksi yhtyettä olivat minulle lapsuudessa ja teini-iässä hyvin tärkeitä. Myöhemmin olen myös löytänyt Moonsorrow’n.  Lisäksi voisin listata useampia yhtyeitä maastanne, mutta nämä ovat minulle ne tärkeimmät.

Mikä on mielestäsi suurin syy siihen, miksi Númenorin pitäisi olla metallin seuraava suuri nimi? Mikä on suurin myyntivalttinne?

En ajattele laisinkaan, että Númenorin pitäisi olla metallin seuraava suuri nimi. On totta, että tällä hetkellä meillä pyyhkii jopa paremmin, kuin odotimme, mutta emme todellakaan ota paineita tilanteesta.

Yleisesti puhuen, minkä luulet olevan seuraava iso asia metallimusiikissa?

Ei minulla ole rehellisesti sanottuna hajuakaan. Retro-tyyli näyttää olevan tänä päivänä hyvin suosittua, kun mitään uutta ei ole enää mahdollista löytää ja tutkia.

Missä luulet ja toivot Númenorin olevan kymmenen vuoden kuluttua?

Vaikea sanoa, mutta toivon, että ainakin julkaisemme mahdollisimman monta albumia. Aika näyttää.

Mitkä ovat Númenorin lähitulevaisuuden suunnitelmat?

Suunnitelmat vuodella 2015 ovat melko selvät. Viimeistelemme uuden albumimme nauhoitukset tammi-helmikuun aikana ja sen jälkeen katsomme, koska levy voidaan julkaista. Sen lisäksi olemme valmistelemassa kahden uuden albumin kappaleen videon nauhoittamista  (eräänlaisia live-nauhoituksia serbialaiselle televisiokanavalle). Tämä tulee myös tapahtumaan ilmeisesti joskus maaliskuun aikana. Sen lisäksi albumilta tulee vielä yksi ennakkokappale/singlejulkaisu, ennen kuin albumi viimein julkaistaan.

Being influenced by such bands as Bal-Sagoth and Blind Guardian, it’s certain that there’s no lack of epic feeling in the music. Hailing from Serbia dark metal band Númenor is currently working with the follower for their 2013 great debut album ”Colossal Darkness”. Kaaoszine contacted the vocalist of the band Despot Marco Miranović to ask more about the proceeding with the new album and how things are going in general with the band.

First of all, could you give our readers an introduction of Númenor by telling a short biography and the style of music you are playing?

Númenor performs epic dark metal and our influences are scaling from some acts from British and Norwegian scene from 90’s. I found the band in 2009 as a long time idea at the ashes of one of my older projects. In 2013 we have released our debut full-length ”Colossal Darkness” for Stygian Crypt productions and we are just recording a new album ”Sword and Sorcery”.

You are currently working with your new album “Sword And Sorcery”. What can you tell us about this album? How would you compare it to your previous material?

Since we have already recorded most of the material and I am just recording the vocals for the rest of the songs I have already a picture how the new album will sound. It will be close to the debut ”Colossal Darkness” but yet more coherent I would say. Some songs are darker with more ambient approach while others have this remarkable epic touch.

Which bands are biggest influences for Númenor? Is there any music outside of metal you like to listen?

Influences are scaling from Bal-Sagoth to old Blind Guardian: so obviously we are influenced by various bands that have this epic moments in their style. It obviously depends from song to song since our music is scaling from being epic metal to being epic black in some songs. Of course, I prefer to listen Mike Oldfield or Hawkwind and one could find some moments as well from Oldfield in our style and music.

From where do you draw inspiration for creating music?

Well that one could go for our composers but yet I guess that they are quite influenced from the various bands from 90’s. For example: Bálint’s (Bálint Kemény – guitars)  songs have more this Bal-Sagoth’s details while Srđan’s  (Srđan ”Sirius” Branković – guitars) have more powerful direction so to say.

How would you describe your music without using basic words like “metal”. In other words, you would you describe your music for a person who has never heard metal music before?

I think that the key-word would be ”epic” and ”symphonic” since Númenor has many symphonic moments in its style. Also, our style has this fantasy moment which plays indeed a big role in our music.

What can you tell us about the lyrics of Númenor? Which subjects are they basically about? How important part lyrics are for Númenor?

It seems that the lyrics when it comes to Númenor are playing a big role since I have noticed that many fans are interesting in our lyrical background. As a matter of fact Númenor is epic metal band with clearly fantasy based lyrics scaling from Michael Moorcock, J.R.R. Tolkien to H.P. Lovecraft.

You are hailing from country, which is not so familiar of metal music. Which bands you can recommend for us from Serbia?

I am more familiar with some older bands from Serbia and I really do not what’s happening right now. I’ve noticed that some 10 years ago (or even more) bands use to have at least one album released, today bands just have one or two songs on YouTube. Personally I like the most one old record from Serbian scene: band Diluvium with their debut issue ”Aurora”. As a matter of fact Serbian scene was very active from 2001-2005 with lots of bands, bigger events. I guess that most of these bands have seized to exist.

How hard (or easy) it is to play metal music in a country where metal music isn’t such a huge thing?

It’s not hard at all. Actually sometimes it could be an advantage in a way because we are very connected. But, comparing to other countries in Europe metal music is definitely less popular in Serbia.

As you are doing a webzine called Metal Sound yourself, I’m sure you are familiar with lots of Finnish metal bands. Which bands do you like the most from our country?

As a matter of fact I prefer to listen some older acts from your country like old Amorphis or old Sentenced. These two bands were very important during my childhood and teen days. Also, later I found Moonsorrow. Moreover, I could now list many bands from your country but these were the most important to me.

What do you think is the biggest reason why Númenor should be the next big thing in metal? What is your biggest selling point?

I really do not have an idea that Númenor should be a next big thing in metal at all. It’s true that the band is doing quite well with brand new song that we have ever expected, but we are definitely not forcing the situation.

What do you think will be the next big thing in metal generally speaking?

To be honest I really do not have a clue. It seems that the retro style is very popular these days since there’s nothing new to be found and explore anymore.

Where do you see and hope Númenor will be after 10 years?

Hard to say, but I guess that at least we will continue to have as many records as we could record. Time will tell :)

Which are the main plans of Númenor for the near future?

Plans for 2015 are already quite clear. We will first finish the recording and producing of the new material during January and February and then we will see when the new album could be released. Also, we are already preparing to film videos for two of our songs from upcoming album (a kind of live sessions for Serbian national TV station). This could happened also very soon. I guess somewhere in March, at least. Also, there will be surly one more song/single released before our new album come out.
