Overkill-laulaja Bobby Ellsworth drive-in-konserteista: ”En usko, että se sopii yhtyeellemme tai meidän genrellemme”

Kevään mittaan koronan aiheuttamat rajoitukset ovat pakottaneet tapahtumajärjestäjät kokeilemaan uusia keinoja. Näihin lukeutuvat muun muassa drive-in-konsertit, jotka ovat tuntuneet jakavan mielipiteitä. Doro esiintyi aiemmin tässä kuussa drive-in-konsertissa ja lupailee myös uusia keikkoja, kun taas aiemmin tällä viikolla Machine Headin Robb Flynn antoi kyseisestä konserttimuodosta varsin jyrkän mielipiteensä. Myöskään yhdysvaltalaisen thrash metal -veteraani Overkillin laulaja Bobby ”Blitz” Ellsworth ei tunnu olevan drive-in-keikoista niin innoissaan. Metalgodzradio-kanavalle antamassaan haastattelussa hän kertoo, ettei hän näe omaa yhtyettään sellaista soittamassa. Vuorovaikutus yleisön kanssa on hänen mukaansa tärkeässä roolissa keikoilla, ja hän näkeekin yleisön yhtenä bändin jäsenenä. Yhtyeelle on ”puolitosissaan” esitelty ideaa, mutta laulaja ei näe tätä tapahtuvaksi. Ellsworth kertoi aiheesta seuraavaa:

 ”Somebody presented it to me. It wasn’t presented from a serious note of ’I have this set up’ but what would I think of it. For me, it didn’t really trip my trigger. I don’t mind people thinking out of the box. I don’t necessarily know that that’s for OVERKILL or our genre. And this is thinking for myself — not thinking for other people.

I think one of the things that make OVERKILL happen is that it’s a very close personal relationship we have with an audience,” he continued. ”You can’t do an OVERKILL show without an audience. You can’t do a lot of shows without an audience. You couldn’t do a SLAYER show without an audience. The audience actually becomes the next member of the band — in OVERKILL’s case, the sixth member; for instance, in SLAYER’s case, the fifth member of the band. Without that member there, I think it lacks. Sure, it’s a performance — you get to see it — but the energy that an audience gives a band and a band gives an audience is what makes thrash metal shows explode or makes them unique onto themselves, that you can’t just do a lip synch-ish-type approach to things.”
