Muutaman vuoden jälleen aktiivisena ollut rock-historian suurnimi Rainbow soittaa kesän koittaessa taas muutamia keikkoja. Yhtye saapuu myös Suomeen Hyvinkäälle 6.6. osana Rock Memories 2019 -keikkasarjaa. Tuolloin Rockfestin lavalla nähdään myös kotimaiset legendat Peer Günt ja Kingston Wall by JJylli, Kuoppis & Brothers von Hertzen. Tavoitimme Rainbow’ta alusta asti luotsanneen kitarasankari Ritchie Blackmoren sähköpostitse kesken keikkoihin valmistautumisen. Hän kertoo hieman tulevista keikoista, Rainbow’n tilanteesta ja musiikista ylipäätään.

Hei Ritchie! Millainen kevät 2019 on ollut sinulle ja Rainbow’lle?

Ritchie Blackmore: Jännittävä! Olemme valmistautumassa Rainbow’n tuleviin festarikeikkoihin ja lähdemme siitä suoraan kiertueelle Blackmore’s Nightin kanssa kesä-heinäkuussa. Olemme äänittäneet nykyisen Rainbow-kokoonpanon kanssa uusia versioita klassikkokappaleista, jotka fanit saavat kuultavakseen kun lähdemme tien päälle.

Kesäkuussa soitatte muutaman valikoidun keikan Euroopassa. Miten valmistaudutte?

Ritchie Blackmore: Valitsemme kappaleet, keskustelemme niistä ja sitten harjoittelemme.

Rainbow soitti viime viime vuonna loppuunmyydyn keikan Helsingin Hartwall Areenalla. Mitä siitä jäi mieleen?

Ritchie Blackmore: Rakastin sitä rakennusta ja yleisöä. Meillä oli todella mukavaa ottaen huomioon, että se oli ensimmäinen keikkamme.

Rainbow esiintyy Hyvinkäällä kesäkuussa. Millaista settilistaa voimme odottaa ja tuletteko soittamaan kappaleita, joita aiemmilla keikoilla ei olla kuultu?

Ritchie Blackmore: Ihmiset haluavat kuulla suosittuja kappaleita, mutta tulee myös muutama uusi.

Miten valitsette keikoillanne soittamanne kappaleet?

Ritchie Blackmore: Kuuntelemme yleisön palautetta ja käytämme vähän maalaisjärkeä.

Onko Rainbow’lla sama kokoonpano kuin viime vuosien keikoilla?

Ritchie Blackmore: Kyllä on.

Onko mahdollista, että Rainbow tekisi vielä uutta musiikkia? Olette julkaisseet jo yhden uuden kappaleen paluunne jälkeen.

Ritchie Blackmore: Kyllä, ”Black Sheep of the Familysta” julkaistaan uusi versio ja tulossa on myös ”The Storm” -niminen kappale.

Mikä on suosikki aikakautesi Rainbow’n historiassa? Entä suosikkialbumi?

Ritchie Blackmore: Se vaihtelee. Minulla ei ole suosikki aikakautta. Kaikilta ajoilta on paljon hyviä muistoja. Parista ensimmäisestä albumista pidän eniten, koska teimme jotain uutta enkä ollut koskaan tehnyt sellaista omillani.

Mitä mieltä olet rock-musiikin nykytilasta?

Ritchie Blackmore: En tiedä, en kuuntele rock-musiikkia. Olen vieläkin 1500-luvun musiikin pauloissa.

Uskotko enää soittavasi Deep Purplen kanssa?

Ritchie Blackmore: Tuskinpa, liikaa politiikkaa. Ei ole helppoa ilmestyä paikalle ja soittaa muutamaa kappaletta. Se on paljon vaikeampaa.

Miten kitaransoittosi ja säveltämisesi ovat kehittyneet vuosien varrella?

Ritchie Blackmore: Luonnollisesti. Me kaikki muutumme ja kasvamme minuutti minuutilta riippuen siitä, mille altistumme päivittäin. Me kasvamme ja muutumme ihmisinä jatkuvasti, kehitys artistina seuraa perässä.

Mitä tulevaisuuden suunnitelmia sinulla on Rainbow’lle ja musiikille ylipäätään?

Ritchie Blackmore: Elän hetkessä, joten katsellaan.

Hello Ritchie. How has the spring of 2019 started so far for you and Rainbow?

Ritchie Blackmore: Very exciting. We are preparing for the upcoming festival dates with Rainbow and then going right into the Blackmore Night tour in June/July. We have recorded some new versions of classic tracks with this line up of Rainbow that will be available for the fans when we hit the road.

You are about to play few selected shows in Europe in June. How have you prepared for the upcoming tour? Have you been practicing a lot for it?

Ritchie Blackmore: No, I haven’t. We put together the songs, we discuss them and then we rehearse them for a couple of days.

You did a Rainbow show in Helsinki at sold-out Hartwall Areena last year. What kind of memories do you have from the show?

Ritchie Blackmore: I loved the building and loved the audience. We had a great time considering it was our 1st show.

You will be coming to Hyvinkää in June to play a Rainbow show. Will you be playing any songs we haven’t heard on your tours lately or what kind of setlist can we expect to hear from you?

Ritchie Blackmore: There will be a couple of new songs. But people like to hear the popular songs which we adhere to.

How do you choose the songs you play on your tours?

Ritchie Blackmore: Feedback from the audience and a bit of common sense.

Will the Rainbow line-up be the same as it’s been on the recent tours?

Ritchie Blackmore: Yes.

Is there a chance for Rainbow to record a new album or release new music in some other form? You have already released one new song since your comeback.

Ritchie Blackmore: Yes, we are releasing ”Black Sheep of the Family” and a song called ”the Storm”.

What is your favorite era in Rainbow’s history? How about a favorite album?

Ritchie Blackmore: It varies. I do not have a favorite time. I have lots of good memories of all the times. The 1st couple of LPs I like best as we were covering new ground and I had never done it before on my own.

What do you think of rock music’s current state?

Ritchie Blackmore: I don’t know. I don’t listen to rock music . I am still hung up on music from the 1500s.

Do you think you will play with Deep Purple ever again?

Ritchie Blackmore: Probably not. Too many politics. Its not easy to just jump up and play a few songs. Its far too complicated.

How has your guitar playing and songwriting evolved over the years?

Ritchie Blackmore: Naturally. We all change and grow minute by minute depending on what we are exposed to daily. We’re always growing and changing as humans, and as artists it follows suits.

What future plans do you have regarding Rainbow and music in general?

Ritchie Blackmore: I live by the moment so lets see.
