Suuri intohimo musiikkia kohtaan: haastattelussa Rammsteinista sekä Emigratesta tuttu kitaristi Richard Kruspe

Kirjoittanut Arto Mäenpää - 22.11.2018

Saksalaisesta industrial metal -jättiläisestä Rammsteinista tunnettu kitaristi Richard Z. Kruspe julkaisee toisen yhtyeensä Emigraten kautta järjestyksessään kolmannen albuminsa nimeltä ”A Million Degrees” marraskuun 30. päivä Universal Musicin kautta.

Teemme haastattelua, koska Emigrate on julkaisemassa uuden albumin marraskuun lopulla. Voisitko alkajaisiksi kertoa hieman albumin kirjoitusprosessista?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Emigratelle kirjoittaminen on aina erilaista.

Jokainen raita on omanlaisensa.

Minulla on tietty metodi, miten kirjoitan.

Richard Z. Kruspe: Se on todella hyvä tunne. On etuoikeutettua saada vapaus siihen.

Uudella albumilla onkin paljon mielenkiintoisia vierailijoita, kuten edellisilläkin albumeilla. Miten prosessi normaalisti etenee?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Tämä kappale on hyvin vanha kappale, jota on kirjoitettu Emigraten ensimmäisistä päivistä lähtien, koska Emigrate sai itse asiassa alkunsa Tillin kanssa. Aloitimme sen yhdessä tehdäksemme jotain ilman muita bändin tyyppejä. Kun muut bändin tyypit kuulivat tästä, he kertoivat, etteivät olleet kovin iloisia asiasta, ja me lopetimmekin projektin.

Millaisia tulevaisuudensuunnitelmia sinulla on Emigratelle?

On toki kappaleita, joita voisin soittaa livenä.

Huh!

Rima on selkeästi todella korkealla, joten tunnen tuskasi.

English version:

The lead guitarist of German Neue Deutsche Härte giant Rammstein, Richard Kruspe, will release the third album of his other band Emigrate entitled ”A Million Degrees” on November 30th via Spinefarm Records. Kaaoszine had the honor of doing a phone interview with Richard only one hour after his main band Rammstein announced the massive stadion-tour so the topics on the interview varied from Emigrate´s upcoming musically really diverse album ”A Million Degrees” to Rammstein´s upcoming stadion-tour and how much pressure the band has in creating the best show of their career so far. You can read the interview here:

In general how has the fall started for you?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Actually after the summer I got used to the hot weather in Berlin. It’s the moment when days get darker I feel like it’s a good time to leave Berlin right now. Which unfortunately I can’t at the moment. It’s the same as in Finland. Like when the fall starts and it gets very dark and it sets the kind of mood. I got used to the sun, I must say.

Ok, so you aren’t the kind of musician who gets more creative when it’s dark?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Actually no, or I don’t know. It’s a good question to answer. I definitely get in a very dark mood. Weather really affects my writing process for sure. I don’t know if it’s better or worse. I love the lightness and I kind of change. I used to work, when I was younger, through the night. I’m not doing that any more. So right now I’m trying to let the light change my mood and let the light and days affect my positivity so to say.

Obviously we are doing the interview because Emigrate is about to release a new album in the end of November. First, could you tell us a bit about the writing process of the album. I guess you had a quite a lot of setbacks with it.

Richard Z. Kruspe: I did! A big one actually. Actually there was two things. One thing had to do with heat and fire and the other one had to do with water. So those two had a role in my recent Emigrate record. So first one was in 2015 where I felt really burned out and I felt I couldn’t really be 100% on the project and I felt that the passion was gone. Maybe I was trying to do another record too quick. It’s kinda hard if you’re working so many times alone and you do not feel that motivated. Normally there’s another guys to carry you on and bring back to motivation. With Emigrate if I’m not motivated then it falls apart. So that’s what I did, I lasted alone for a while and then 2017 a big water damage destroyed all my harddisc and the recordings. I had to start from zero. But after awhile, after getting past the first frustration and anger I took it as a new beginning. As a challenge to start to write something out of my memory. And a funny thing… The first time I talked about this record only to my family and my friends, I get kind of feedback where alot of people say that it’s such a positive record! And I was like really? Maybe that’s the secret. They shoud write something that was destroyed and start out of memory rewriting it. Maybe it’s a method in there.

I can actually see that it’s a positive record. I also feel that those tracks are in a way happy, so to say.

Richard Z. Kruspe: Yeah, it’s strange because I didn’t get that feeling on the first recording. So maybe something has changed. I have no idea why. So it is what it is and I’m very very happy about it. I can say that I’m very satisfied about the result that came out. I started to change a little bit the team and I was working with a new mixer/producer from Germany, which turned out very interesting. When I listened to the record, I think this is one of the best sounding record I’ve made ever. I’m very happy about the result.

So obviously there’s a new Rammstein album in the pipe, so were you actually doing both albums at the same time or how did that go for you?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Obviously it wasn’t planned like that. Emigrate record was in my mind finished even before and I was planning to get it out much much earlier. It took me so long to build my studio again and working in a studio where there were so many technical aspects that we had to take care of. But then I felt like Emigrate definately had the first priority because when I go back to the ”main-wife” I really will not have any time to get this baby out. We plan right now with Rammstein mixing the new record in December and getting it out next year and then starting a new tour. I’m gonna be busy for the next three years so there was no chance of getting the record out after that. It’s a little bit too rushed in a way with those two records coming out, but this is the only way and I had to do it.

Did it feel therapeutic to work with this Emigrate album along with Rammstein because you can do musically whatever you want with it?

Richard Z. Kruspe: It’s always different way of writing for Emigrate. Actually I think the writing process was almost the same this time. Before I was really trying to pay attention to which idea would fit into which project. Nowadays I actually realized like for example there was alot of songs that I was attending to write for Emigrate that got chosen by Rammstein. So now I just try to write as good as possible and who is there first gets the song. But of course it’s a different way of writing. It’s the opposite of Rammstein what I do with Emigrate just because of collaborating with so many other musicians and other singers changing the theme. It’s the opposite and I really try to change as much as possible. It’s like having twenty different lovers and nobody is mad if they’re leaving.

Musically this album is quite diverse. I think each track stands on its own. Was that your plan when you were writing it or did you have a clear vision of what you wanted to accomplish with it?

Richard Z. Kruspe: No, I don’t really vision in that way. I mean, I do have a vision about certain kind of thing but when I write music it just comes out as it comes. I have a certain method how I write, which comes from a painter from New York that showed me his way. When he goes into his studio, he has like ten different paintings laying around and he paints one painting and if he doesn’t feel connected he goes to the next. It’s the same how I write. If I go to the studio and I open up songs and then I feel like this connection, then I stay. If there’s no connection then I leave and go to the next one until the tracks are finished. There’s not normally musically-wise any idea what I wanna do. It’s a really open space of ideas and it can change from day to day. But there was one idea I thought that I was trying to do. I was actually thinking of making a movie and I had the story lined up, which I was very interested in. I’m getting a little bit into filmwriting these days and I was trying to maybe think of doing a film and using the record as a soundtrack. I was actually meeting alot of directors and we talked about it and it took me like half a year to get this project going. But then I realized that the story was so complicated and interesting in a way, that I didn’t have the money to produce that film. So I had to say goodbye to that idea and I went back to the usual thing to do and just make a record.

How important do you feel that Emigrate doesn’t have any musical boundaries and that you can do whatever you want with it?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Well, it’s a very good feeling. I’ve never really worked very good under pressure in general. You know, we also have the freedom with Rammstein, it’s just like there’s another five guys and normally I’m the one that pushes the thing. With Emigrate it was great to just leave it alone when I felt like. You know, I don’t have the passion at the moment. It’s a privilege in a way to have that freedom. I always said that Emigrate was never a project out of commercial things. Even though it goes really well at the moment, I must say. I wasn’t expecting that. It was always a project out of love and passion for music and just the idea to work with those singers and it’s a real honour to do that. I love the idea to do that.

I was actually going to ask you about the guests on this album. There’s quite a lot of them and they’re all really interesting. How does that process normally work for you? Do you finish the track and then decide the guest or do you already know the guy who is going to be singing and then you make the track for them?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Mostly it’s like I’m writing the song finished and then I’m thinking about who could actually be part of the track. Normally the song helps me on which singer the song wants. You really have to listen to the song. That’s something I’ve learned. Those songs, they have their own identity after a while and you have to really listen carefully what they want. If you push them too far you’ll realize that it’s not the right way. It’s not as authentic as when the song decides what the song wants to do and I’m just a tool to translate what the song wants. There are sometimes ideas that I have. For example there’s this song ”War” that I thought that the song wants Serj (Tankian) from System of a Down to sing on it. So I asked him and he really loved the song and the next day he called me back and told me that he doesn’t know what to do. I was like what are you talking about and he said that he liked the song as it was and told me to leave it like that. I thought in the beginning that well, just tell me if it’s not his type and he told me that he really liked it. So I took it as a compliment and left the song as it was.

The other song ”1234” I felt like this was a song that only had my voice on it and I didn’t really think of having any collaboration with the band from Billy Talent and my manager asked me if I would be open for the collaboration and I said yeah, let’s try it. When I heard his voice on a track… He made the track so much more alive. I always felt that this song in particular is a very lively song in a way. You can really hear the band play and he even made it more alive. There’s also people that I think I would love to work with. There’s this one name that always pops in my mind that I want to write a song with. It’s Martin Gore from Depeche Mode. I really appreciate his work and I’m a big fan of his writing so that would be interesting. If I would work with him it probably would be more different and I would maybe have an idea and he would also write something and we would be kind of doing it together.

It’s funny that you mentioned that you actually listen to the song and then decide who would fit into it, because my personal favorite song from the album is ”I’m not afraid” and I think it kinda has the Ghost feeling in it and that’s why Cardinal Copia obviously fits the song super well.

Richard Z. Kruspe: It’s interesting that you say that because when I was writing I was thinking of him, but I didn’t know him so well, so I forgot about him. We were looking for producers with Rammstein and we had like three producers that we were considering and then I realized when I was checking those producers that they had worked with Ghost already. So I called him up asking him about his experiences working with those producers and he said to me that he was coming to Berlin next week. I’d never met him before. So he came over and we really got along and then I remembered the song and I was asking if he was open for collaboration and if he has done any collaboration. He told me that he doesn’t do that. I thought just whatever and asked would he mind if we played the song. Then I played him the song and he looked at me and said ”I’m in. I’m doing it.” Again, maybe the song asked him in another way.

There’s also a track called ”Let’s go” which features your Rammstein friend Till (Lindemann) and obviously that’s nothing like Rammstein has done before. So how did that work for you?

Richard Z. Kruspe: This song is a very very old song that has been written from the very day one of Emigrate because I kind of started Emigrate with Till, actually. We didn’t start Emigrate, we started something together. We were trying to do something both of us without the other guys and when the other guys got wind of it, they told us that they weren’t really happy about it, so we stopped doing that. Then I went from that to starting my own thing. But I already had that song and I rewrote that song but thinking what is it that I actually want to talk about in this song. I had those pictures in my mind. I’ve been friends with him for a long long time and we go back to ’87 or something. But specially around ’89 there was a time when we were like it almost felt like the Wild West! We were into some crazy shit, to put it that way. It was just such an interesting time and we have a real strong memory of it. I was trying to write about that time in our friendship. That’s what the song is all about.

What kind of plans do you have when it comes to Emigrate? Do you plan on playing shows or will it just remain as a studio project for now when you’re busy with Rammstein or what does the future hold for you?

Rammstein

Richard Z. Kruspe: I really like the way it is right now. I like to work in the studio with it. It’s like my main work and it’s this kind of work that brings the most pleasure out of me because it’s about creating something which I really love. That’s my life. Playing live… I already have a band doing that. I know it’s not Emigrate. It’s a very very thin balance that I have to keep between both those projects and at the moment first of all there’s no time, as you said. There’s a new record coming out and we’re gonna be on tour for the next three years. It’s kind of like you have a ”main-wife” and you have a lot of lovers and when the ”main-wife” calls, then you definitely have to be there. And the band members are cool that I have my little lovers on the side. So yeah, I don’t really need it in a way. Yes, there are songs that I would actually want to play live. This is just actually something that I was thinking yesterday. Maybe I’ll ask Rammstein if they would like playing Emigrate song just for fun of it. It’s an idea I’ll ask them.

So in the end a bit about the stadium-run with Rammstein. I guess it’s gonna be pretty big production-wise. How excited are you to get up on stadiums?

Richard Z. Kruspe: I have a mixed feeling about that. Obviously I’m looking forward to doing something like that because we haven’t done something like that before. It’s like the next step. On the other hand it’s also a big responsibility. We’ve set up the performing on a really high level and to continue doing that… We’re in the middle of doing that and I just realized that in stadiums everything is just different. You have to think different, you have to deal with daylight and there’s just all those things you have to consider. It’s not that easy. Like my brain is running on circles thinking about what you could do and what you can’t do. Hopefully we’re coming up with something good.

I’ve seen you live like four or five times and I’ve always thought when I’ve seen you live that is there even a way to top this show? And every time you’ve done that, so the bar is obviously quite high. I can feel your pain with that.

Richard Z. Kruspe: We’re in the middle of it and it’s gonna be interesting. I’ve just been thinking about the world of Rammstein and eventually something will come up, I hope. At this point I’m very happy to have five other guys that have to carry the burden as well. Just to think about going by yourself with that kind of decision… I really feel comfortable having another five guys to worry about that.

So Richard, thank you a lot for all your time and all the best with everything you have in the pipes. Anything you want to say as last words to all the Finnish fans reading this?

Richard Z. Kruspe: Well, I would love to say a big hello to Finnish drummer Mikko (Sirén) who plays in Apocalyptica. That’s something I wanna say. I miss him, I love him and I can only say so many good things about this guy. You have a very cool, well behaved, friendly, positive, good Finnish citizen. I really really love him, you can be really proud of this guy, I tell you. This is like very special guy. I love him.
