Kun laitetaan yhteen ruotsalainen laulaja ja rumpali, amerikkalainen basisti ja ranskalainen kitaristi, joita yhdistää vanha kunnon rokki, saadaan aikaiseksi Blues Pills. Bändin eka vierailu Suomessa oli joulukuussa ja onnekseni sain käydä todistamassa sen ja pääsin myös jututtamaan bändiä. Valitettavasti Elin (laulaja) ei päässyt haastatteluun, koska oli kipeänä ja ymmärrettävästi halusi jäädä hotellille lepäämään, että pystyisi vetämään illan keikan, mutta bändin herrat soivat minulle hetkisen aikaa.

Hei ja tervetuloa Suomeen. Miltäs tuntuu olla ensimmäistä kertaa Suomessa?

Zack: Kiitos. Tähän asti on ollut mukavaa, vaikkakin saavuimme vasta eilisiltana. Saa nähdä, mitä tuleman pitää.

Teidän debyyttinne ilmestyi heinäkuun loppuvaiheilla ja olen lukenut/kuullut paljon hyvää levystä ja pidän siitä itsekin. Kertokaas näin jälkikäteen omin sanoin, mitä pidätte levystä ja oletteko edelleen siihen tyytyväisiä.

Zack: Puhuimme juuri tänään asiasta emmekä ole liikoja kuulleet sitä. Olimme tänään paikallisessa Levykauppa Äx:ssä tapaamassa faneja ja siellä kuulimme ekaa kertaa pitkästä aikaa levyä. Me kaikki olimme sitä mieltä, että levy kuulostaa edelleen hyvältä. Oli myös mukavaa huomata, että olemme siihen kaikki edelleen hyvin tyytyväisiä.

Onko video “High Class Woman” otettu tarkoituksella suoraan elokuvasta “The Taxi Driver”? Miten musiikkivideo ja biisi itsessään kohtaavat?

Zack: Se oli meidän tuottajamme idea. Ei kai siellä mitään yhtenäistä ole biisin ja videon välillä. Tuottajamme halusi tuoda musiikkivideolla esille maailman luokkaerot ja hänen mielestään se oli toimiva idea. Annoimme siinä sitten hänelle vapaat kädet.

Teidän levynne kansikuva on hyvin voimakas ja myös symbolisesti puhutteleva. Kuvan on maalannut Marijke Koger-Donham 1960-luvun loppupuolella. Mitä tämä kuva kertoo musiikistanne?

Zack: Ihailen suuresti hänen taidettaan. Kun etsimme kansikuvaa levylle,  minulla oli tapana lähettää itselleni ja muille bändin tyypeille ja levy-yhtiölle kuvia, jotka olivat mielestäni hienoja ja sopisivat meille, vähän niin kuin inspiraationa. Taiteilija oli tehnyt erään kansikuvan mahtavalle jousiorkesterille, josta me kaikki pidämme, ja pidimme myös paljon siitä kuvasta. Päätimme sitten etsiä ja ottaa yhteyttä häneen ja iloksemme huomasimme, että hän edelleen tekee taidetta. Kun hän kuuli meidän musiikkiamme ja myös piti siitä, hän lähetti meille kourallisen maalauksia, joita hän oli 60-70-luvun vaihteessa tehnyt ja ehdotti myös, että voi maalata jonkin meille sopivan kuvan. Mutta löysimme sitten maalatuista kuvista sopivan, joka oli oikeastaan täydellinen jo siksi, koska se oli maalattu silloin 60-luvun lopulla ja meidän musiikistamme tulee paljon vaikutteita siltä kaudelta.

Elinillä on todella voimakas ääni, jossa on paljon tunnetta mukana. Mielestäni hän tuo biisien sanoitukset hyvin esille jo pelkästään omalla äänenkäytöllään, mutta mistä hän ja te saatte inspiraation musiikkinne sanoituksiin?

Zack: Teemme niitä aika paljon yhdessä, mutta sieltä löytyy myös sanoituksia, jotka ovat sitten joko Elinin tai meidän muiden tekemiä. Saamme aika paljon inspiraatiota ihan meidän omien kokemuksien kautta ja elämästämme yleensäkin. Teemme myös sanoituksia sillä periaatteella, että yhdistämme keskenään sopivia sanoja ja sitä kautta muodostamme jonkinlaista omaa tarinaa. Elinillä kyllä on vahva ja täynnä tunnetta oleva ääni, joka herättää ne biisit eloon. On olemassa paljon hyviä muusikoita ja laulajia, mutta heiltä puuttuu musiikin tai laulun sielu, mikä on harmi. Elinillä on lahja, jota hän osaa käyttää hienosti.

Elin sanoi eräässä haastattelussa, että  alkuaikoinanne hän oli huumorilla sanonut teille: ”Aletaan nauhoittaa biisejä ja hommataan levytyssopimus ja päästään sit kiertää maailmaa.” No, miltä nyt tuntuu, kun nämä huumorilla sanotut sanat kävivät toteen?

Zack: Välillä on vaikea itsekään uskoa, että tässä sitä nyt ollaan, elämässä sitä omaa unelmaa. On uskomatonta, että olemme ensimmäistä kertaa Suomessa, täällä on jo kaksi loppuunmyytyä keikkaa ja ihmiset haluavat tulla katsomaan meidän soittoa.

André: On myös tärkeää tiedostaa, että näitä asioita ei voi pitää itsestäänselvyytenä.

Miten Blues Pills on muuttanut teidän elämäänne? Ja millainen päämäärä teillä on musiikissanne?

Dorian: Muutin Ranskasta Ruotsiin tämän bändin takia, kun olin 16-vuotias. En osannut muuta kuin vähän englantia, joten olihan se iso muutos teinille, joka ei ollut jalallaankaan astunut Ranskan rajojen ulkopuolelle ennen sitä ja sitten kerralla suoraan kotoa toiseen kulttuuriin. Mutta se kannatti ja oli sen arvoista, koska teen sitä, mitä olen aina halunnut ja unelmoinut eli olen nyt kokopäiväinen muusikko. Onhan tämä aikamoista, kun matkustamme koko ajan ja tapaamme paljon uusia ihmisiä, siinä oppii paljon. Tämä on ollut mahtavaa.

Zack: Olemme matkustelleet muutaman vuoden aikana paljon ja saaneet keskittyä oikeastaan vain bändin asioihin, joten se on iso muutos, mutta hyvällä tavalla. On hienoa olla tässä.

André: Onhan se paljon muuttanut ja unelmani on aina ollut olla kokopäiväinen muusikko.

Keikka Jyväskylässä oli aivan mahtava, vaikka Elin joutui sairaana sen vetämään, mutta yleisössä tuskin huomattiin, että hän oli kipeänä. Bändi on asiansa osaavaa porukkaa viimeisen päälle ja toivon heille pelkkää hyvää tulevaisuudessa. Toivottavasti Helsingin ja Turun keikat oli yhtä kovia!

When you mix up a Swedish singer, an American bassist, a French guitarist and a Swedish drummer and they all love good old-fashion rock and roll, then you got Blues Pills. I saw their first gig in Finland and got the honor to do an interview with them. Elin (singer) could not come for she was sick and had to rest before the gig. But André (drummer), Dorian (guitar) and Zack (bass) had few minutes for me.

Hi and welcome to Finland guys. So this is now the first time for you here and how have you liked it?

Zack: So far it has been really nice, but we just arrived last night so we will see how it is.

Your debut album was released in the end of July and I have heard just wonderful things about it, but now when time has past a bit of it, so how do you feel now and what are your own thoughts of the album?

Zack: We were just talking about it and we haven’t listen to it so much. Now when we were in the record store Levykauppa Äx to do the meet and greet with the fans so they were playing the album there in the store. It was the first time we heard it for a while, but we thought that it still sounds great. It was nice to still think when you hear it that it’s a good album.

What about the video “High class woman” is it taken from the movie “Taxi driver”? And how are the video and the music connected?

Zack: It was our directors idea to do it. When we started to make the video so we just let him do what he wanted. He had this idea to remake the movie and thought it would be great to show the differences of our social classes in the world. I don’t think there is much connect with the video and the music.

On the albums’ cover you can find a picture which have been painted in the late 60’s by Marijke Koger-Dunham. So this is a really powerful picture and have really strong symbols there, how does this picture reflects on your music?

Zack: I am a big fan of her art. When we were looking for the artwork for the album I was often sending pictures I liked just for inspiration for the artist. But she had done this one incredible work for this band what we loved and inspired us a lot, so we decided to look her up. When we realized that she is still doing artwork we got in contact with her. After she heard our music she send us a handful of paintings what she had been making at the 60’s. She said that she can paint something new or we can choose from the old ones. So we found the one and we thought it was perfect. And the painting just fits with the music and we thought that the picture from the 60’s would be just perfect.

Elin have a really strong and powerful voice filled with emotion and feelings, I think it brings out the lyrics better, but where do you get the inspirations and ideas for the songs?

Zack: We write them pretty much together, but some songs are written by her and others by some of us. We get inspired by things what have happend to us and some songs are inspired by nothing and we just write words that fits together and make an own story like that, but I think that she have a really strong emotion in her voice so it brings the words almost alive. There are a lot of bands who are really good, but you get the feeling that there is no emotions and no soul in the music. She is really good to bring her feelings and thoughts in the music and I think that is a wonderful talent she has.

Elin said in one interview that in the start where everything begun “Let’s record some songs and get a record deal and tour around the world”. So how does it feel to tour around the world now and realize that her spoken words became true?

Zack: Sometimes it is really hard to believe that we are now living our dream. And it’s unbelievable that we are now for the first time in Finland and already Helsinki is sold out and here is too a lot of people who wants to see us.

André: I think it is really important to not take it for granted that there is always gonna be people on the gigs and think that everybody likes us.

How have “Blues Pills” changed your lives? What is the main goal with music for you?

Dorian: I moved to Sweden from France and it have been a really big thing in my life. So I was sixteen when I moved and I had never been out from France before that. It was a big thing because I didn’t know any english then, culture was different and the language. And now we are all the time traveling, seeing different people and it has been lot of learning in everything and I have learned english what I could not speak very good few years ago. It has been wonderful.

Zack: It have been a lot of traveling and just band stuff for the few years, so it changed a lot. It have always been our dream and goal to do it full time. It feels good to be here where we are now.

André: Yes it have changed a lot. It have always been a dream to do music full time.
